Thanks everyone! I think we'll go with the Angler's Roost 202m. As I recall, Johnny is a fun guy to talk to and a good guy to do business with.

Metallic paints (Testor) seem to work best.

Thanks, Spencer. They are around $120, on-line. That price doesn't leave her money for line and backing. Although, I'm considering that reel for one of my own rods. Glad they've worked well for you.

I was looking at the Angler's Roost offerings, as well. The prices sure look good.

It's been a while, since I looked at fly reels. I'm asking for opinions, as to what is considered the best value, in fly reels. It's for a 5 wt trout rod. The customer has already spent more than her budget on the rod. So, we are looking for a quality reel, hopefully under $100.
Thanks for any advice.

you might be able to buff off some of the "shine" with very fine steel wool, taking care not to go through the chrome coating.

What misuse occurred? Should the ferrules have been wrapped?

Jim,
I'm assuming that you are accustomed to spin-casting and/or bait-casting, and, therefore have a fast casting motion. In my opinion, you would likely be more comfortable with a "fast" (as opposed to a "slow") action in a fly rod blank.
Fly-casting is not hard, just different, than what you are used to. The weight of the line is what loads the rod, instead of the wei

foam brush, trimmed to width of wraps (more or less). One coat, in one pass (if possible). PG dries very quickly-the less you mess with it the better. Buy the brushes in bulk, and throw brush away , after one use.
I actually have a piece of foam that was packaging for a computer screen. It is the same as the foam brush stuff. I cut pieces to fit the size I need, and tape them to an old br

Mike,
There is little collector's value. A very good condition rod might sell for about $200 in a shop; $100, or less, on-line. In other words, if your friend chose to sell it, he could expect to get about $100,at most. My advice would be to make it as functional, as possible, since he wants to fish it, and don't worry about harming the "value".
As for matching the thread, even if

I used some green pigment from Sherwin Williams. The pigment was free! They sold me a can to put it in (a couple of bucks). It makes a nice transparent finish and mixes well with the PG. Extremely durable-PermaGloss is tougher than epoxy, and meant for use as a blank finish.

Depending on where you live, Craigslist may be an option, or you might try having a well-advertised garage sale. However, I would probably get in touch with my local Trout Unlimited or other fishing club, and offer them as raffle prizes, tournament prizes, or donations,

I've built some of the Mud Hole blanks mentioned above. I recommend the 5'6" length. My 4 year old daughter had no problem casting it, and can continue to use it the rest of her life. I think an ice blank is just too short for regular fishing, and difficult to cast.
Match it to an underspin reel, and built the rod as a spinning rod. An underspin reel is kid-friendly, and you can always

If all you're shaving off is a little paint, it would probably be OK. If you actually remove blank material...you already know the answer to that one. If it's a matter of wanting to use the rod right away, I would wrap on a single foot guide at the tip. Secure the wrap with a little color preserver, and it it'll work fine. I've had one rod, with CP-only wraps, in service for over a year. When

Try Citristrip, available at any hardware store. It is non-toxic, gentle on the blank, and very effective on old varnish.

I'm taking a trip to Mexico, not sure yet, exactly where, but somewhere on the Pacific side, maybe even down as far as Cabo. What would be a good weight and length for a fly rod or rods for beach fishing? What flies? Any other suggestions?

Unless you wrap the mono with really wide spaces between wraps, it will reflect light back , and be visible.
