361. Re: Lathe opinon
I have the microlux and it is ok. I suspect that they are all quite similar if not manufactured by the same mfr. I think you will appreciate the extra two inches. But make no mistake they are not a quality precision machine like for example a CLAUSING (sp?)

Well, I know for the past years attending seminars at Lamiglas, they gave the attendees both glass and graphite scrap, GREAT COMPANY. Bob Balcombe bought an arm load of broken rods for a song where he got good as new components plus all the blank stock. Plus a lot of other plusses they offer other stuff to attendees what a great company!

The rubber band or tape is for the rod blank whether the chuck itself slips or not. I have a different brand of power wrapper which has a chuck that it quite stiff and absolutely does not back off, but I still use a very long rubber band on the butt cap area or tape on the mandrel to keep it from slipping in the chuck because of the taper. Finally as I said before you are also protecting

Here is what you might try, after you are sure it is level. If the chuck is slipping because it is itself too loose in the mechanism then a piece of tape across the two plates so it can't slip (it shouldn't be so loose that it will slip) Next as previously mentioned when the butt cap is tapered you are gripping on a very narrow line around the butt cap and the slighted movement will be towards a

assemble it 90 degrees off then with a little pressure twist the tip section until the guides are aligned to lock in place. to remove reverse the process.

You don't need to remove guides to slide the new partial repair grip down the blank, use the Bob Balcombe method.

and finally after you use the fine sand paper, use your good old brown paper grocery bag.

372. Re: Shipping Rods?
Oh I forgot to add, some time back I was told by a supervisor in one of the popular shippers that red bands on the tube calls for better handling. Don't know how factual that is, but I still bought a roll of red duct tape to the standard grey to put a few bands on the tube. So far no problemo thank goodness.

373. Re: Shipping Rods?
Since I only need one cap removable I cemrnt one on, but to help stop those that would open it to steal the contents I wrap both ends the same except for some minor little unnoticeable marker and tell the recipient which end removes.

You got it, It takes a lot more to fold/bend one of those 4" sewer pipes than the thinner pipe. Cheap insurance to not have to rebuild.

Yep, I attach a restraint cord to the reel seat and secure it at the butt end of the tube. As far as shipping containers, diameter is the key to not folding in the middle. Skinny folds in those conveyor corners that are loaded with other stuff, fatter doesn't. Since I started doing that, no problems. If I put a complex weave on the rod with 25 plus hours in the weave alone, I am not going t

376. Re: Shipping Rods?
I would never ship USPS anymore since I learned "It's not our fault" no matter what THEY did to it with abnormal handling and even if they dropped it out of an Airplane or ran over it with a steam roller and as a governernment they get away with it. Lately I have been using FEDEX and have no complaints since I can go to my local Kinkos store to ship it. Of course you have to use some co

From a Husky I recognize the Oregon State Beavers. One thing I add is thread numbers right on the pattern where a thread change is called for. I don't use a left list.

as I said before, I have seen the blanks being sanded and don't believe you can measure to the 1/1000" and from those measurements say yep there is the problem point on this particular model blank when the sanding has so much "hands on" and subjective judgement of the finished product let alone when you coat the blank.

I have another question. After watching a manufacturer sand blanks after the celophane is removed to get rid of the spiral epoxy ridges I noticed how "hands on" this evolution is, so when I see that the OD measurements are all the way into the 1000th, How can these measurements be accurate when the worker is using a subjective observation that all the ridges and the epoxy gloss is remov

384. Re: Blank Flex
First let me say that I am not taking anyones side. It is admirable that both individuals cared enough to think about rod stress and tell us what they found or think about the issue. I think it is interesting to note that Barry's expirement pretty much shows the same thing that Dennis is saying about the stress on the blank from the guide. Barry showed that as you mess with the guide location/num

385. Re: Snagging Rod????
I sugesst you look at the Lamiglas site to the left. Look at their TRI-FLEX blanks which you will read are a graphite/glass composite blank. and some of their series come in two piece blanks. One advantage for having a glass tip is that the softer tip section which shortens up the moment arm to make it a little easier to pull in the foul hooked fish. Having said that I agree with previous stateme

I fish for Sturgeon from a boat, so don't have personal knowledge, but have seen the bank fishermen for sturgeon and have seen that they use Spinning rods up to 16' long. I suggest you give Karry Batson a call or send him an email. I am sure he can answer your question.

As many have said before including Tom, finish does not have a shelf life. Second mix until you can't see the wispyness in the mix to know it is completely mixed. Never apply out of the mixing cup because you just might get some incompletely mixed finish which may not harden properly, and leaving finish in mixing container will accelerate the setup time. So pour it out on a piece of aluminum foil
