Billy,
Thanks, I'm coming from Ohio, and it has been similar here.
Do any of you guys have a shop out near BNL (Shirley)? I would love to visit and see some of your work.

Jason,
I lived in Bay Shore (a bordering town) for a year, before I discovered this site. Its on the south shore about 30 miles east of the eastern edge of the Queens city limits.
Unfortunately, I'm heading to BNL on LI for the next two weeks, which means that I will be coming back home before you guys meet.

Should one be wary of the goo gone destroying a blank if the blank's finish is scratched? It seems if it will remove the finish epoxy, that it may wreck the epoxy inside the blank if allowed to penetrate.

On the rare occasions that I need to use Windows on my iMac, even with the Intel chipset, I prefer to use emulation software, such as Parallels. It sets up a virtual machine that I can isolate from the outside world. You do need a copy of Windows to install, and if you use Parallels, it doesn't matter which version of Windows you have (i think it needs to be XP or Vista, but which service pack

The problem is that most companies don't put the power and action on their blanks. If you go to Wal-Mart and look at the rods on the shelf, nearly all of them will give the length, action (which is actually the power), recommended line weight, and recommended lure weight. If all manufacturers would begin putting action and power on their rods, then the fishermen will be able to tell the differe

I was going to say not so fast, and ask if you were sure that the rod was a Falcon. But, I went down and checked my Falcons. They are all low end Falcons, with all but one coming from the original Silver Series, before the were upgraded to the "improved" Original Series.
My Silver series rods feature solid cork handles, as they have a few deep pits (1/4"), and no noticeable se

I think spinning reel seats are uplocking because the vast majority of anglers hold the rod in their right hand. The pressure put on the nut from the anglers hand is in the direction to tighten the reel seat.
However, I prefer to reel with my right hand. In this case when I use an uplocking reel seat on a spinning rod, the pressure from my hand tends to loosen the threads, and actually does.

Darby,
Take a look at your unit conversions again. 1 meter is a little over 39 inches, so 1.27 meters would be 50 inches.
With the change, you would have 114 - 65 = 49.
That might help get you a little more in the ballpark that you expected.

John,
If I were to build a jack of all trades rod for freshwater fishing, it would be a spinning rod, 6' - 7' long, and medium power with a fast action. For the rod blank, I would probably look in the realm of spin bass or spin jig blanks.
Such a rod would work for just about any bass application, and can be handle the larger freshwater species with a little bit of care, and could be used

Emory,
What Bill is saying is that the angler palms the reel with the line lightly pinched between his thumb and forefinger, while holding the rod roughly perpendicular to the line. The angler then can feel the longitudinal signal coming through the line, as well as, the transverse signal coming through the rod. While palming a reel, a tip-heavy rod can feel unwieldy. This can put a strain

Jim,
I'm sorry that I missed the designation for the blanks center of mass. After posting, I realized that you could use the static balance point of the rod and use that.
A spinning rod can be made to balance at an angle, because the center of mass is off of the axis of the rod. So long as the center of mass can be made to lie below your hand, the rod can be balanced at an angle.

Jim,
Nice idea of a starting point. A couple trouble issues, your calculation is for a massless rod. You would need to either model the blank, or experimentally find the center of mass of the blank and include it in your calculation.
Also, as long as you are making your calculation based on holding the rod parallel to the ground, then your treatment of the reel is okay. If you want to ca

Hi guys, I'm thinking about delving into the world of rod building, and have been lurking around here for a while. There are some lengths and actions that I can't get in an off the shelf rod.
One way to get the striping would be to tape a piece of mono to one end of the rod, spiral it around a few times and then tape it off to the tip. You could then put a series of marks on the rod and conn
