Are blank manufacturers so short of names that they have to resort to naming them after criminals? Are they made for fishing or pokong a teller in the eye from seven feet away? I'll think I'll wait for the Impaired driver blanks or the serial killer series-they're sure to come next.

Get a sharp pair of scissors or even better, a good pair of snips-I got mine at Backlash Tools and they are fantastic for this task. When the tag end is pulled through, place the scissors or snips in position to cut. Before cutting, pull the thread enough to stretch it-winding thread, especially size "A" has a decent amount of give to it. When you have the thread stretched, cut it cl

Kevin-Color some finish with black pigment-brush over the area to be covered. When it's dry you can use a clear decal, which, in my opinion is more eye-pleasing.

JP-I don't have the bolt-Knox took it and wrapped it in abalone. You can get it at the show-he'll have it for sale at his booth.

Kevin-Wrong JP!! That would be his brother, Josh P. Timberlake. JP (the real one) is developing his own holographic hex bolts that will "liven-up" the tip of his prototype "Small-stream," 5-foot, zero-wt., fly rod with Aftco Curved Uni-butt." Paired with a Penn International VSX50 and spooled with 6,000 yards of silk flyline, this baby is great for "finessing&qu

I didn't think it was JP's work-he always puts the hex bolts on the tip section. You should see how that slows the action on his custom "Home Depot 2-wt.."

Got a rod in for a complete "overhaul"-replacing the guides, seat and grip. The rod is a 7-foot spin with no discernible specific application except pulling fish out of water. It was also "custom made" (and I use that term loosely-it wasn't purchased at a store). The first thing I noticed was that it weighed a ton, the weight being in almost the entire butt section. I remo

He had some wood at the show that was unreal-at great prices too. In all the hub-bub, he took time for every customer I saw.

No offense, but I was sharing what has worked for me, not looking for advice-but I certainly enjoyed reading everyone's ow solutions. I'm gonna try the rubber band just to see how it works but I'm still happy with the EVA on my wrapper. Thanks all!

I have a Pac-Bay Power Wrapper with the Deluxe chuck and I like it a lot except for one thing-the rod slipping out of the chuck or loosening when either powerwrapping or drying. I have tried various methods to prevent this (which actually is caused by the rod either not being level or having too much bend). I have tried using masking tape and electrical tape, using a hose clamps, etc. None of

Charles-JP isn't a sponsor on this site, but he buys a booth at the Expo, and he does a lot for rod building in NC. Most of these sponsors know him and his work, and speaking for myself, I don't think they would begrudge him selling a few wood grips. I've been on this site from the beginning and there are a probably 4 or 5 few folks who have taken wood grips to another level. J.P. is certain o

You need to come to the Expo next February-better prices and bargains than any @#$%& site or any other source. Plus you'll be supporting this board's sponsors as they offer most all the bargain blanks. There are literally thousands of blanks for $10.00 dollars or less. Show up Sunday toward the end of the show and you might well get them for less. I don't recollect the exact amount but I came

I'm with Larry-cut it down and replace the tip. Tell the customer what you did and how it happened; apologize and show him that the remedy did not change the action. Tell him that you could have cut the tip down, replaced the tip-top and he would probably would never have noticed, but you don't do business that way. Offer to do what it takes to satisfy him. If he's just your everyday fisherma

I spray Formula 409 into the grip, swish it back and forth and slide the grip on over the epoxy. It makes the grip so slick, you can slide a very tight grip all the way down without any epoxy. Most of the 409 is squeezed out of the bottom of the grip and I have never had any issues with glue failure or any other failure, probably because the 409 lets you uses such tight grip.

Bob-I can find that much $ in my couch cushions. The only reason for any rod builder not subscribing to that incredible magazine is "chronic terminal cheapness."

John-The SBSS article was extremely well written and photographed. I have used nothing else on my spinning rods. That article itself was worth the cost of a three-year subscription to Rod Maker. I can't believe that some on this site do not subscribe. The price is less than that of a cheap second-hand blank.

I would highly recommend: 1. Using the search feature on this site; 2. Buying a rod building book; 3. Posting your questions on other rod building sites-I would highly recommend the Custom Rod Builders Guild site (@#$%&); . 4. Buying a book on spelling and vocabulary-I for one, find it almost impossible to translate your questions into English.

On the left margin of this site are a list of sponsors-I would contact them for direct answers to your questions. The rod builders on this site can only help you so much-At some point, you're going to have to "take the bull by the horns" and learn this craft by trial and error like 99% of the people here. You're going to make mistakes by the dozens, but you will learn not only what wo

Roger-Why would you use a razor blade held at a 90 degree angle (exactly perpendicular) to scrape? Unless you use different razor blades than I am familiar with, they are thin (I know that is self-evident) and flimsy at that angle. You couldn't even shave a whisker with them held like that. I would at least use an extremely dull knife edge (metal or plastic) or a fingernail to scrape with so I

I've got a burl cork grip that has one coat of Tru-Oil on it now. I'm thinking of giving it more of a glossy finish-any thoughts of using Lumi-Seal as a top coat or using any other product?

It's fascinating to me that although women are outnumbered at the reception probably 4 to 1, they seem to win a heck of a lot of these door prizes. I'm not complaining-actually it's neat that they do, I just find it puzzling. At the last Expo in Charlotte, I brought a friend who does not build rods, and he won a Visualwrap program. He had no idea what it was. I, of course, convinced him to gi

The bottom line is that 98% of the fishing public is just downright cheap. Given the choice of paying a modest price for first-rate craftsmanship or yanking a fish out of the water with a broomstick, the vast majority of fishermen would choose the latter. Maybe for most folks, fishing is nothing more than drinking beer while holding onto cheap graphite sticks-the "sticks" serve only t
