Krylon is not normally used for outdoor applications! There would be no benefit from over-spraying Tru-Oil, it in itself is waterproof and impervious to most grudge encountered while fishing.

I think we need to get real about G Loomis blank sales status!
Shimano is a International Corporation approaching 100 years of age. With sales of roughly $2 billion dollars annual. It's product lines include cycling and snowboarding in addition to fishing tackle.
Their total fishing product sales amount to 1/3 the size of their cycling products and 24% of their total sales. If we use the

For those who are Gary Loomis fans, there is good news! His new company North Fork Composites started shipping blanks last week. Initially only fly rods I am not yet clear on the distribution chain, but expect to have one of his new blanks to build out shortly.

I'd like to clarify something Tom said in an earlier post that many are misinterpreting. He said that blanks were less than 3% of their product sales, NOT 3% of the market! This is a huge difference!
As for the speculation that Loomis profits from blank sales and that if they improved quality and service they could justify staying in the blank business, it is just that......PURE SPECULATION!

I didn't know that Billy was the spokesman for the "majority of rod Builders" I guess I should show him more respect!

Obviously some very hard feelings expressed re Shimano's actions with Loomis. Tom really hit the nail on the head though as this is a business, not a charity.
I have built many Loomis fly rod blanks before and after Gary's departure and have never had a problem with their products or services. In fact to this day many customers request Loomis blanks.
Some posts get very cute with their dis

3338. Re: Wrapper Opinions
I bought the Eco-Wrapper at the show and could not be more pleased. It is easy to use and has some really neat features not found on other hand wrappers. The quality of construction is excellent as well. If some one stole mine, I'd buy another in a minute!

3339. Re: Reel seat removal
I have successfully removed reel seat set with epoxy by immersing them in boiling water (reel seat inside ziplock bag) for about 20 min and with some effort the seat came off.
I understand if it does not come off the first time, that you can alternate immersion in the boiling water and ice water to free it up. I have not had to resort to the ice water.

3340. Re: Tru oil question
I very often use Tru-Oil on all the cork types you mentioned and find I like the results. I use it primarily to both seal the cork and bring out the color(s) and find one coat does both quite well. I apply with my fingers on both cork and wood while turning on my lather slowly, them wipe any excess off with a coffee filter.

In any case, burnish after, not before cutting the thread. Better definition makes things easier, in this case we are NOT talking about "Fuzzies", but instead "nubs."

3342. Re: Straight guides
I have found that after wrapping the guides (before any type of finish) and you can still move them, with rod horizontal I turn the rod so the guides are on the underside and then site down from directly above and determine if each guide is in the same relative location side to side. This works because the rod acts as a straight edge and you will see portions of the guides on each side of the rod

3346. Re: cork dye update
There is a big difference between wood and cork, even though cork is a bark from trees. Wood does have pores, cork does not. Wwoods cellulose fibers are also bound by lignin which dissolves with heat and water, even better under pressure.
As cork is quite elastic, pressure will cause the cells to compress, but it will take great pressure to collapse the cells enough to open them to fluids, i

3347. Re: cork dye update
Cork is a closed cell material and does not absorb moisture very deeply.
Otherwise it would never have been used for fishing net floats for centuries.

Harry, I bought one of the Eco-Wrappers at the show and am very pleased with it.
I made one modification to it, getting rid of the sharp edges that protrude out towards you on the wrapping arms by just rounding them off.

3350. Re: dye cork
Cork is "closed cell" so it does not absorb fluids. Remember the old cork net floats that lasted for years adrift in the oceans, if they absorbed they'd sink, but didn't.
You may be able to get a shallow surface stain, and then coat with something to protect.

Karry, what a great service!
While most of us may "customize" your recipes, it sure provides a great starting point and will aid in discussions with our customers as well.

There are not many using the "micros" for fly rods, in fact there is no proven benefit when used on fly rods. This movement to "how light can I make it" goes beyond common sense. Hav ing to adjust your leader length to accommodate the fad is an example.

They are nylon thread without color preserver. When coated with epoxy the thread turns mostly transparent, especially on dark colored blanks.

Tru-Oil cleans up well with mineral spirits (paint thinner) but should not be thinned. Epoxy cleans up with Alcohol while still wet, but not after it has set. Don't know about the other two.
