Could be an optical illusion - but top two guides don't seem to be alighned with others. You didn't need underwraps. Black underwraps and light upper wraps tough to do. Herb

I cut REC aluminum seats when I build fly rods for a particular customer. I don't think it saves very much weight - but he likes it that way. I taped the seat - used a dremel with cut-off blade. Just make sure that you leave enough seat barrel to accomodate any reel foot that may be used. Herb

And how much does yore reel weigh?? You're concerned with grams - the reel will eclipse the seat. Just choose the seat you want. Herb

Mike, You know what - you can easily ream the spacer to accept the REC 1" FB extension. Just have the threads extend out of the seat and screw on the FB. That will gain you about 2" in effective rod length. But the butt section will be 2" longer than the other 3 sections. You could screw off he FB - but it will still be about an inch longer. Let's talk later. Herb

Hmmmmmmmmmm That spacer won't be compatable to the REC FB hardware. You'll have to extend the blank through th seat and install a different REC FB. Herb

Yes - you can use the REC fighting butts - or extend the blank beyond the seat and build your own on that. Herb

Hi Mike, Herb here. Yes - adding weights is an old thing - especially with Spey rods. Some reels have ports for added weights - Galvin. But why not convert the up-losking seat to downlocking - depending on the model you used on the 10' blank. Lose the hood that gets ported into the cork grip. Epoxy an additional sliding hood to the non-threaded end of the seat. Get an extra cork check to

Charles, The definitive Nymphing blank is from CTS. They make two blanks Nymphing specific: 10'6" - 4 piece - in #2 or #3. The guys who know talked CTS out of making a Nymph specific blankl in 11'0" because the stock Affinity-X 11'0" #2 or #3 is an excellent Nymphing blank. They also make the Affinity-X 11'0" in a #3 with a #2 tip to facilatate "the flip".

Alfredo, So,you decided to go with a Spey blank after all. That grain rating is for Anchor Poiint Casting (Spey) not for OH casting. Good luck managing mono running line. Herb

Francis, Epoxy it a generic term. There are two kinds of epoxy used in rod buildong: 1. Structural Epoxy to bond reel seat bushings (arbors) and grips to the blank. IMO - West System GFlex 650 is the best epoxy for this job. 2. Epoxyto coat thread wraps . They are not interchangable. Guide "tubing". I assume that you are referring to the guide ring sizes. They do not come in

Alfredo, I can't stress enough that you need: 1. A blank over 12' 2. Fast action - similar to a S/H fast blank. A blank designed as a Spey rod will not do - unles it is rated to carry many more grains than for Spey use. I have such a 12'6" blank in my personal rack. Herb

Ron, Has nothing to do with tip-top fit. Fly rods are easy to fit. The epoxy ring is just that - a small dab of thread epoxy around the back end of the tip-top barrel - no thread - just thread epoxy. Herb

Ron, If the only tip-top available is too large for the rod's tip - some builders will put thread UNDER to tip top barrel as a bushing. Rarely the case with a fly rod. I place my ring of finish at the end of the tip-top barrel. About 1/16" - 1/8" wide Herb

Ron, No need for trim band. Just adds weight in a place that you do not want it. I place a very narrow "ring" of thread finish around the tip top barrel. Herb

Elastic beading thread from Michels or JoAnns. Comes on a spool - get it in 0.5 mm. Wrap it on under tension - 2 overhand knots - finished. Herb

Alfredo, I know NJ conditions well. Then - IMO - you do not want a #8 or #9 2 handed blank. It's all about grains. The more grains the better in wind. The 12'9" blank will serve you well casting 550-650 grains. I favor the intergrated short headed lines like the Wulff bermuda Triangle Short #13 or #14. Mike prefers the old Airflo 2 handed beach lines. Either way - you need grains. I

Hi Alfredo, I started experimenting with CTS blanks to develop the perfect 2 handed fly rod for surf fishing the outer Cape Cod beaches. I started at 11'0". At the same time - unbeknownst to me - Mike O, a U.k. fly guy was doing the same thing. But he started at 14'0". 10 years ago, we happened to meet on a Cape Cod beach and shared experiences. He gave me an order for some 12

Mark - Et al. Living in a FL Condo - I too, am short of space. I bought the FlexCoat Cork Lathe about 20years ago and never regreted it, or felt that I needed something else. I clamp all parts to a work bench in my Condo's common work room with a shop vac to collect the dust. It does everything i need - I epoxy my cork rings directly on my fly rod blanks - and turn them down on the FC Lathe

Dennis, I have been using the FlexCoat Cork Lathe fpr 12 years. Under $200 - you use a Corded Drill to power it. Rigid has one for about $35. I turn all my grips directly on the blank and it works perfectly. Contact me if you decide to own one and I will give ou tip on how to use it. Herb CTS

Ron, The foam used deformes/compresses very easily - so reem less than you would do for cork. Then force the grip over the blank - the foam will compress. The front edge of the grip should not come in contact with the blank. The carbon fibers will abrade the blank. Whenever I installed a CFG I alwas port the grip at the fron end and insert a neoprene "O" ring as a protectine buffer b

I use REC single foot recoils. Many times the feet are different lengths after prepping. I place the shorter feet towards the tip. Wraps are correspondingly smaller towards the tip. Of course, smaller guides get shorter wraps. Herb

I have installed 3 CFG's on 3 fly rods. Before I installed them I tested for "Grippyness" with tap water. They DID get more grippy. But VERY slipperywith saltwater. I took the shine off one of the=m and it got more slippery. That was 7-8yrs ago. Then, 2 yrs ago, I bought a custom (to my specs) CFG in Ritz shape with fighting butt - the carbon fiber was left unfilled and was very
