Tim, I never use ceramics on a fly rod. Softens them too much, IMO. I only use REC heavy wire single foot Recoils. Herb

Gary, I do exactly that - vs the CCS meathod. But I use neoprene "O" rings to simulate guides. I slide them forward and back as needed. Herb

Taylor. CTS has a design for an Affinity-X 7'6" #10 - one piece fly blank. As Tim and Spencer stated. CTS will build any length and line weight - but there is a design fee to be paid. The 7'6" #10 one piece is already designed - so no fee. Design fee for 1-2 piece $136 U.S.. 3-4 pieces $204 U.S. Plus cost of blank. Herb CTS Rep PS - CTS built a 8'0" #10 for a friend o

Phil, The odds are that the arbor will not be concentric to the seat unless you shim the seat/arbor with 4 toothpicks stuck in each end to keep the arbor centered. Herb

You are doing nothing wrong. Holes in cork/rubberized cork are NOT concentric. When you use the 1/4" hole as a guide you are guaranteed to get what you got. That's why the first thing you have to do is to make the grip round and concentric whether you build on a mandrel or on the blank. You have to knock-down the high spots with a Stanley Surform tool. Use a light touch and ONLY hit the

To get the BEST concentric fit - best to ream the arbor in 4 pieces. If you don't get concentricity - the ported cork grip - if it's pre-made or made on an arbor - will not fit correctly. Herb

Al, That is entirely normal. What to do: Spiral wind a size C or D thread wrapping thread twice (back and forth) over the arbor. If it's not snug enough - use fly line backing with one spiral. Two if not snug enough. BTW - best if you epoxy the arbor onto the blank first. If it's one piece - cut it into 4 equal pieces. Reaming is much more accurate vis-a-vis blanks taper that way. T

Robert, If you're talking about hoe to store lines not in use - I do the following: I insert a dowel ( or pencil or pen) into the factory spool and simply "slap" the spool to wind the line onto the factory spool. I wind it so head is on top so I can see the flyline marks indicating the line weight. Herb

Michael, IMO - you are absolutely correct. Thread is not enough. The thread and epoxy form a composite material that secures the guides. Think fiberglass and structural epoxy. Alone, they can't do the job. Herb

I only fly fish - and only in salt water - I remember struggling with this same thing 25 yrs ago. But from a practical point of view: I have (too many) reels from 6+ oz to 9 oz. I can't say that I find much, if any difference. Your fly line is mostly off the reel in your stripping basket or on the boat's deck. So, that lightens things up. More importantly, while retrieving, the rod tip SHOUL

Mark, Thank you. David, CTS has many designs that are available but not noted on their site. Some may be 2 or 3 piece. I'll check with the factory and get back to you. Does your customer favor a Fast / Extra Fast action - or one more Moderate? All that means is that the Faster blank will stop flexing more toward the tip. The more Moderate blank will flex farther into the blank. Neithe

Tim, When I was in to experimenting - I had CTS build me a #7, 7'6" Affinity-MX (moderate blank) . I caught 25-30" stripers on Cape Cod flats with it. Lot's of fun. I assume you mean "puppy" reds. It was a special order - but still available with no additional design fee - because I paid it yrs ago when ordered. Let me know if you want RB.Org price. Herb CTS Rep.

Brian, That's a very good question I never used a ported reel seat. Intuitively - I would shy away from them becaue the epoxy bond has to be less than a non ported seat. My guess is that you have to "worry" the excess epoxy out of the ports. BUT!!! If you use a heavy dose of solvent - i.e DNA or Acetone - it will wick under the reel seat producing even less bonding. I would use a

Oh - but SS does corrode - If not washed scrupulously when used in saltwater - no matter how careful you are with your epoxy - they will discolor your wraps - only way to avoid this is to use Titanium. Herb CTS

Robert, One should never wind line that way. Every turn you put on the spool that way creats a twist in the line. Herb

Robert, I'm trying to understand how that happened. Didn't you use your left hand to crank the backing and line onto the reel?? And - by "hand wrapped" - do you mean you did it yourself vs a fly shop using a machine? I hope you don't mean that you wound it on by holding the spool fixed in your hand and rotated your other hand like when useing a manual kitchen mixer. Herb
