I have been using a scrap piece of blank with a couple of inches of cork mounted on it. It's like chucking a handle that way. Granted you may have to make several depending on how many different rod sizes you routinely build but If you make them about a foot long each one will work on several sizes of rods. I also use these while wrapping my ferrules, makes life a little easier for me.

As I posted in an earlier thread, I used to grind the teeth off a hole saw and then grind the lip like a chisel. After this is done, chuck it up in the drill and cut out your pieces. It works just like a knife & it also cuts your 1/4" center hole. This method is guaranteed not to rip up your bark pieces. I have put together a diagram that may help to visualize this.

At one company I was working for we took the holesaw and using a grinder ground the teeth off & then ground around the outside on an angle (like a chisel) We used this method for cutting holes in the roof liners and floor mats in vans for installing shelving and other equipment. This should work great for cutting bark.

I find it strange all this talk about spiral wrapped rods. The reason being I have been fishing spiral wrapped down rigger rods since '91 or '92. They are not a new invention. In fact my downrigger rods for salmon are factory tied Fenwicks. I liked the way the worked & later had a friend who was building rods back then custom tye me a pair of 12 foot Lamiglass light, noodle type rigger rods f

There are a couple of reasons I use single foot guides as tip tops. !/ They're lighter than the tube over design. 2/ I think they look nicer.

Well almost. I'm just waiting for a winding check, good thing it;s a 7 piece rod or it would be a little hard to get the check installed. Things I found out during this first build... 1/ Tying single foot guides on as tip guides on really light rods are a total pain. I think it took me 3 tries and about 45 minutes to get the @#$% thing on right. 2/ Don't be cheap with the rod finish. It too

I use the U40 Brush cleaner. The stuff works great, there is no residue left behind after use. When the brush dries it's just like new.

You want to position the guide where it's outer ring touches the line. So #3 is my answer. Now I could be interpreting the instructions incorrectly, I'm sure someone with a lot more experience them me will correct me if I'm wrong. I sketched out a drawing that may help.

It's best to turn your harder materials down very close to the end size otherwise you tend to end up with high spots where the harder materials are. So turn your hard materials, glue up handle and then turn the cork down to the hard materials.

I am also just getting into this rod building thing & have spent the last 3 months or so doing reearch. You don't need alot to get started. I bought a Cabelas hand wrapper which works fine for now. I may get a power wrapper in the future but it is not needed at this point. For a dryer I purchased a 4.8 rpm unit off @#$%&, it's inexpensive & works fine. I hand turn for the first 45 min. to

Fast action is not what you want when fishing light line ie Great Lakes Steelhead fishing. If you are using 4 to 6# leaders and a fast action rod a lot of the your time will be spent tying on new hooks.... :-)

Scott I don't think it is necessary to paint the feet, but if you are using regular nylon with no CP the feet show through. If using NCP or CP with regular nylon this is not an issue. If you are using regular nylon without CP I would touch up the feet with Testors.

Batson has a couple that fit the bill. Depending on the area you are fishing you can get away with either of these two. Use the heavier if you are going to be fishing the Combat Zone area on the Russian River (This is a Fly Fishing only Area During Certain Times ) ISA1026F 8'6" 2 Piece 12-25 lb. 3/4-1 1/2 oz. Moderate Fast Heavy 4.28 oz. ISA1027F 8'6" 2 Piece 15-30 lb. 3/4-2 oz.
