Any one know where to get 8' fly blanks in a #9/10wt ? I'm looking for one for close quarter heavy fly action on reef dwellers. I've been looking around but dont see anything specific. Or should I be looking at a spin blank for something around 3/8-1/2oz casting weight-it'll need some guts in the butt !

The closest I could find was a St Croix SC2 8' Medium Mud Hole 2SW80MF or MB941-MHX at 7'10"
Both seem a little heavy for 9/10 weight.
Can't seem to find an 8' med light which would cast easier but may not have enough power after hook-up.

Ask Todd Vivian at Mudhole about the Lamiglas CSF10210 4F fly rod blank they have in the discountinued Lamiglas section. Not built/designed like your average fly blank, but it's 8 1/2 ft long and 4 piece..
The light/fast tips on hotshot blanks or maybe a glass tipped livebait blank like Super Seeker would work well.

call bill stevens or lance at swampland. take a look at the 963,964,or 965. the 963 or 964 would probably work for what you have in mind

Gene, the MB941-MHX is a 94" 1 power blank. I'm interersted in why you think it's a bit heavy for a 9-10 wt fly line. (I just built a 10 wt on an SJ 782-MHX...a 2 power...and the 10 wt. loads the rod beautifully.)

I haven't personally built or cast a rod built on the MHX series. The construction material isn't advertised in the data I have, so I assume an IM7 graphite. Based on this selection the butt dias are too large for a 9/10 weight. If you say the blank you built upon casts a 10 weight I'll accept your judgement to be correct. First hand knowledge. If the material has glass added to the composite structure for increased durability the dia's will certainly be larger.

I just had CTS in New Zealand build me an Affinity-MX, 8'6" 4pc #10. I also had them build me an Affinity-MX, 2pc, 9', #9.5 which, I guess would be your 9/10. Point is that they will build you anything you wish. And their blanks are fantastic.

Hi everybody and thanks for taking the time to answer. There is some very interesting information here when it comes to looking at blanks that are normally suggested for use in fields other than casting the fly-I wish there was a bit more info on CCS data on the blank manufacturers web sites, and I should take the time to understand a little more about it too.
First I should have mentioned earlier that I would need these blanks in at least 2 pce, because I need to fly to get to the grounds,and just to get them delivered here in the Philippines. Spencer, thanks for pointing out the discontinued Lamiglass rods, I will follow them up as a back up option. To Herb, I already have a couple of Blue water CTS fly blanks that Stephen sent to me last year, a #12wt Affinity and a #16wt Revo and I love them-I have already emailed Stephen at CTS with my request for this project.
What I wanted to see, and I was really pleased to see, the suggestions posted on blanks designated for other use, such as Eugene and Gary posted, that could be transposed for use as fly rods within the criteria I posted as it opens up a whole range of possibilities that would not normally be considered. I hope we can come up ith some more of this, even if its just for the excersise-its interesting and useful.
