im starting out also ive built 3 rods so far and feel that you would be better off using the cheap homebrew equipment starting out
i say this because you dont really know what you want in the equipment until you have built a few rods and get the hang of it and start to see what would make life easier.....you dont want to spend $400 on a wrapper with this this and this and then come to found ou

fast action is great for hook setting power because the "backbone" starts way up on the rod instead of in the middle or down low....i use fast action rods when snook fishing with lures and it works well

15-25lb or 15-30 or 12-30 anywhere in that range (preferably 15-25)
7-7'6 fast action and super sensitive and very light weight....price doesnt matter
also i have one question
do certain guides make a rod more sensitive? if so could you give an example of

when i used to buy custom rods sometimes i opted for the buttwrap and sometimes i didnt....the money wasnt the problem on the ones i didnt want a butt wrap on
i think some rods look excellent without a buttwrap and some rods look good with one...i like the simple look better

i use flex coat lite sometimes and when i mix it i mix it...get 100000 bubbles in it then blow in it and it releases some and then heat it when its on and it comes out bubbleless and i only mix for about 1-2 minutes (probably because i mix vigorously)
im with tom i dont know what you people do for 30-40mins putting on epoxy but when i the flexcoat lite i put it on dont matter if its level or

i talked to a local tackle shop that builds thier own rods and they told me that the butt wraps usually add about 30-40 dollars on to the rod

i dont have one but im thinking the guys that are using 200+rpm motors would need it to keep the rod from bouncing around
i dont think turning too fast would be a problem when wrapping as long as you can wrap at the speed you are using

if you cant find that then try U-40 Duragloss LS Supreme...very clear and pretty easy to work with and 1 or 2 coats is pretty thick
i just recently started using it and i have nothing bad to say about it

i got bubbles the first time also but the second time i didnt get any bubbles
when you are done mixing are there bubbles in the mix? the second time i did it i mixed slowly with a metal spatula(i find the metal spatula reduces the amount of bubbles when mixing) and didnt get any bubbles in it and when i put it on some bubbles come out from under the thread or something but all came out before

463. Re: Guide Sizes
ahh ok i was getting a little confused when i keep hearing the smallest guide that will do the job
i figured 30lb could pass through a really tiny guide but didnt think i was reading it right
it seems to me that most of the "off the shelf" rods use guides that are too big unless you have a knot or something to pass through it
thanks for the info :)

im building a snook rod and will be using 40 or 65lb power pro and the recoil guides seemed like a choice as sometimes people like to get stupid where ill be using it and end up breaking guides...guess ill have to find a different guide to use

its a lot easier than it looks! ive been building for about 3 months and when i first thought about making my own rod i thought it was really hard but as i learn im finding everything to be really easy
if you would like to practice buy a rod from neals fishing products(sponser on the side bar) you can buy a rod kit which comes with blank, guides, top, reel seat, grips for $25 then you just ne

flexcoat makes some nice arbors that are cheap in price but very nice and easy to use
ive glued a couple of reelseats on and ive never clamped them down i just put the glue on slide the reelseat on and either leave it standing up or let it sit on the wrapper and turn it every couple minutes(im not sure if thats needed but i figure the glue might migrate to one side and i want it on all sides)
