G'day Guys,
I'm just contemplating setting myself up for trolling for southern bluefin tuna and albacore. The method of capture is trolling lures such as feathers, skirts and bibless minnows, but the fishing would be done standup.
I have read here and there that in the US a lot of big game fishermen are now using smaller, high drag capacity reels spooled with braid (to get good capacity) an

Tom,
Thanks for the reply.
I guess I should have elaborated a bit more. I am building a rod for my Dad and the theme is his favourite football team. I have managed to find a sticker (paper based) with the team logo on it, and that was not easy. I was hoping to have the rod finished by the weekend for his birthday, so I really don't have time to get set up to produce my own decals or have th

G'day Guys,
Is it possible to use paper based stickers as decals? I'm guessing that they may soak up a bit of CP or finish at the edges and then darken there, making them look second rate.
Any comments?

G'day Guys,
I'm guessing it would be OK to use EVA trim rings in a Hypalon grip. Any comments?
Thanks

128. Re: Mounting Buttcap
Duane,
The rod is actually a saltwater rod, but the butt cap is one of the Renzetti ones from Mudhule with the hard rubber "ball" on the end, not a gimbal fitting. As the rod may be subjected to some reasonably large fish, I reckon I might use some form of arbour.
Russ,
I have some cork that I could use for an arbor so that may be a good option for me.
Thanks

OK, Thanks guys.
This rod is a 8-17lb casting rod so is not really heavy, but I will take your recommendation and use an arbor or drywall tape. I guess my feeling was that I would need to anyway but I didn't know if I would get away with going over the EVA.
Thanks again for your advice.

130. Mounting Buttcap
G'day Guys,
Just starting on another build and I'm using EVA for grips and an aluminium butt cap.
Is it OK to machine a tenon on the EVA and then mount the butt cup over the tenon? Or would I be better off to use drywall mesh tape to form an arbor under the butt cap?

Tom,
I recently finished a 7' 3 piece spin rod and I think I used 8 guides, 3 to the rear of the choker, 5 flyguides as choker and running guides and a tip. I spaced my first fly guide 4" from the tip and the rest about 5" each behind that.
To my eye, the line angles in your photos seem a bit acute. I would suggest maybe one or two more guides.
Having said that I'm not hugely

134. White thread
G'dau Guys,
If I want to use white as a trim colour on guide wraps, what is the way to go, use NCP thread or use regular nylon with CP? I want a nice solid white colour with no bleed through of the blank colour underneath.
Cheers

136. Re: Fuji WDBSG
Tom,
It will be a spiral wrapped light bottom fishing rod. I thought about using the WDBSG as a means of limiting sideways movement of the line and therefore reduce problems with the line stacking on one side of the reel (ref my post of a week or so ago). The other option is to offset a normal ring guide as you suggested. I just thought that I might be able to use a WDBSG without offset and ac

137. Fuji WDBSG
G'day Guys,
Are the Fuji WDBSG (power ovals) suitable for use as a butt guide on a casting rod in the 10-17lb range, or are they just too chunky for this use?

Billy,
Thanks for that. I was probably after red but I haven't quite got it sorted in my head exactly what I want to do yet, so it may turn out to be another colour.
I'll drop Mark a line and see what he has.
Thanks

139. 3/8" ID coloured EVA
G'day Guys,
Can anybody point me to a supplier that can supply coloured EVA grips with an ID of 3/8". I have looked at the close out stuff at Mudhole but the colours that are left don't appeal unfortunately.

Guys,
Thaks again for a great discussion.
Tom, I thought that this situation may be an advantage on a non level wind reel and spiralling the way you have indicated. I also think that what you said about the levelwind "hanging" may be true in this case. The Daiwa, while quite a nice reel (but not very expensive or sophisticated), does have a fair bit of play in the mechanism and th

Thanks for the advice guys.
On a rod that is non level wind could you use this to your advantage to help lay line i.e. the line wants wander to one side of the reel so you only have to push it one way and let itself wander back?

G'day Guys,
I rebuilt a boat rod in simple spiral style and put a Daiwa SL47SH level wind reel on it. It appears that the spiral is causing the line to stack to one side of the spool, the same side that the bumper guide is on.
The stripper is a BHNLG20, the bumper and all the rest of the guides are single foot Fuji BLBLG10. The BLBLG is not a very low guide and I reckon this is causing the

146. Thread colours
G'day Guys,
If any of you have Tom K's book, could you please have a guess at the thread colours he uses in the last few pages to demonstrate guide wraps. The colours are a bright yellow and a darkish red. If anyone can name the colours I would appreciate it.
If not, any suggestions on thread colur for a brown blank? I know, I know, another thread colour question, but I'm hopeless at choosi

OK, I did some more mucking around tonight.
Reel spool diameter is 45mm, that would put the choker at 1215mm from the spool face. With the choker at this distance the butt guide ends up at 18" from the spool face, which is about where I reckon it should be, so thanks for your assistance.
I still can't work out why the choker ends up so close when I line up the spool shaft with the edge

Thanks for the input guys,
Ted, my choke point is about 1020mm from the reel spool from memory. The reel spool diameter is 50mm so by your 27x method it should be 1350mm. That would make a big difference.
Tom, the line I'm using is 6lb Fireline and the reel spool diameter is 50mm.
I can't see where I'm going wrong. I've lined the spool shaft up with the edge of the work bench and marked
