Raymond, Thankyou very much for the tutorials. Very helpful and I should be able to get the fade happening now. Regards Jason

Billy, Thanks for the info. I had a look at the web site and understand now what the pigments are used for. A quick call to a local fibreglass supply place has unearthed some pigment. It's not TAP brand but hopefully should do the same thing. Cheers and thanks for your help Jason

Duane, I'm keen to give them a go. Mucking around with big blobs of epoxy and getting covered in the stuff is no fun. I don't really care about the cost. From my point of view the easier installation outwieghs any cost difference anyway. Jason

Chris, If I was the type of bloke that enjoyed having teeth pulled then yes, I would have called it fun. I have heard of Rod Bond but I don't have any. As this is my first rod I have just used a good quality 2 part epoxy I have on hand. It's actualy a boat building epoxy, not that it really matters. I'll probably upgrade to the "proper" stuff at some stage when I place an order for c

Tom, I think I get where you're coming from. It sounds like the same method for single trim inlays that is described in Dale Clemens book. But I guess my point is that the silver will will have to be very long. You can't leave it attached to the spool or feeding from your thread holder? I've also noticed sometimes that metalic threads will "pucker" up a bit i.e. the foil on the outsi

Sorry about this Guys, Lots of questions and I really appreciate you answers. I want to do a fade to decorate the butt of the rod I'm re-building for my boy. I'm not real keen to try a proper cross wrap yet so decided to keep it simple. Thought I'd go black for about an inch then fade to silver, then silver for about another inch. I undertsand the fading process i.e. black wraps, 1 wrap

G'day Guys, I need to get hold of some Permagloss to refinish a couple of rods but have not been able to find a supplier in Australia. Can anyone help with a distributor or seller in Australia? If not I'll just order it from the States. I've also read on here that you can colour Permagloss with TAP pigments. I don't recognise this terminology and wondered what they are normally used for so

G'day Guys, Just thought I'd post this experience. Installed a reel seat on my son's boat rod that I'm re-building on the weekend. Blank was 9mm diameter and reel seat was an 18. I used drywall tape as the bushing and doubt I'll use that again to take up such a large gap. So I wrapped on the tape to the right diameter so it was just a snug fit on the reel seat. Thought to myself "I'

G'day Guys, I've just been thinking about how to static test a rod and what gear you actually need to do it. I'm guessing that you need some sort of rod holder set up in your shop to hold the butt of the rod while you load and the rod and move guides to suit. In the case of a conventially wrapped overhead rod, I expect that a rod holder with gimbal fitting and corresponding gimbal fitting on t

Ted, Thanks for the reply. I should have given more detail. The grips are EVA. I will build up the end of the blank with drywall tape to fit the inside of the butt cap. I like the idea of using the syringe needle to let the air out. If you let a little glue come out of the joint with EVA grips, won't it penetrate them (being porous) and then leave an ugly glue smudge on the grips? I can und

G'day Guys, I've just got my parts to rebuild my sons rod and will be gluing up the grips and reel seat in the next few days. Should the reel seat be bonded to the grips i.e. should I put some glue on the front edge of the reel seat and the back edge of the foregrip to bond them together? My gut says no and that the grip forced against the seat and then bonded in place should keep the join

Tom, Thanks again for your advice. I guess I'll just have to find a similar rod to the one I'm building, buy a butt guide that is the same size and probably also a guide that is one size up and one size down, and then see which fits best. At least that will give me a rough guide size with which to start a static test and I can adjust from there. Gee its not easy when you're first starting o

G'day Guys, I have done a couple of searches and couldn't find what I was after but I am sure it has probably been covered before so please bear with me. From reading this forum and Tom's book I have a fair idea of where to place the butt guide on a casting/trolling rod and the factors that need to be considered in its placement i.e line angle from the reel and the need to keep the line off

Dave, Thanks for your further post. I now understand your reasons for using the SF guides. The rod I am re-building, while quite powerful, is quite a moderate action and will bend right down to the foregrip. I think I'll stick to DF guides for this one as I am more confident of being able to wrap them securely than SF's. I do like the idea of SF guides on heavier rods so I'll probably try t

Guys, Thanks for all of your input. Very helpful and useful to me. Dave, If you don't mind me asking, why do you use single foot guides on heavy rods? I am only a novice but they would seem unnecessary on a heavy rod as you don't really need to save weight. Is your rationale for using them more to do with the height of the guide (SF's lower?) rather than anything else? How do you wrap th

Tom, Thanks for your advice. I hadn't considered the non-fishing damage issue so will go with the heavier framed guides, especially as this rod may be used by other people (meaing fishing buddies) who might not be quite as careful with my gear as I am. Weight was the last thing on my mind with this rod. It is like a broomstick so heavier guides won't make any difference at all. I find this

G'day Guys, Here comes another question. Hope you can help. My last question related to a spiral wrap on a casting rod I have. I have also been given an old boat rod to rebuild as a project. I have had a discussion by email with Chris Karp regarding "neutral" guides in a spiral setup and I have also read the post "Simpletonian Spiral Wrap made difficult....." which discu

Guys, Thanks for the replies. I should have given more info. The reel is a Daiwa Millionaire 6HM (about 20 years old) and would be about the same size as the current Millionaire 300S, so its not a huge reel. I run 20lb braid on the reel, not because I need it or can get this much drag over the rod, but because I had the braid. I tend to run leader in the 20lb class more for abrasion resistance

G'day All, I want to re-wrap an exisitng casting rod of mine and turn it into a simple spiral at the same time. I have read some posts on here regarding strength of SF guides and I think I will be right with them on the underisde of the rod. The rod is only a 5-6kg (11-13 pound) stick anyway and is a general purpose rod used for a bit of bottom fishing and also some trolling for small pelag

Tom and Ken, Thanks for your advice. I was sort of expecting you to say what you did. Anyway, look slike its glass for my standup rods. I see no reason to pay three times more for graphite when I probably won't notice any advantage over glass. Thanks again Jason

G'day All, Being quite new to rod building, I was wondering if anyone could give me their opinion on graphite vs glass rods for game fishing. From reading this board I have a basic understanding of the advantages of graphite for spinning/casting rods. However, does this marked advantage continue into rods for game fishing that are not used for casting? I understand that a graphite game blan

Chris, I'm glad you asked this question as it was one I would have asked myself. I am very new to rodbuilding and I am currently re-building a very simple solid fibreglass kids rod for my son. This is my first ever rod building project. My next project will hopefully be a 10 kilo standup rod mainly for tuna. I had also wondered whether to go convential or spiral. I think the question has been
