Ken,
The female part of the ferulle appears completely undamaged. If it was indeed a car door that did the damage, I assume that the rod was in two pieces at the time and only the male part copped the damage.
Is the purpose of installing rod blank in both sections when using a metal ferrule to strengthen those areas as they are very thin walled?

Paul,
Unfortunately no. I'm guessing, from the look of the remaining bit, that it was completely crushed and broken off. The ferrule looks like it has had a close encounter with a car door.

G'day Guys,
I'm just seeking some advice regarding the repair of a tip over butt ferrule in a graphite rod. The rod is a 7' 2 piece spinning rod that I'm guessing you'd call a medium light rod.
The male part of the ferrule has been broken off so that there is only about 1/2" of it remaining that can slip inside the female part of the ferrule.
I'm assuming that the best way to fix th

Ken,
Thanks for the blank recommendation.
Mel,
If you use the rod standing up, then what else can it be other than a standup rod, regardless of line class? I had not thought of using a harness with this setup as it's purpose will be school sized bluefin tuna. My experience so far has taught me that these size fish will be to the boat in 10-15 minutes, so no real need for a harness. Howev

OK so I did get the mag out of storage and had another read. It seems that a blank closer to 5'6" would be better. From what Ian Miller said in the article, a rod for trolling lures should be a bit stiffer in the tip so it does not pull lures out of the water when they surface to "breathe" and a more moderate action is probably preferable for tuna.
This still leaves me in the sa

G'day Guys,
I'm wanting to build myself some standup rods for school size bluefin tuna (in the 15-30 kg range) using spinning reels. The reels will be Penn 650ssm spinners loaded with 500yds of 30lb Izor braid and a mono top shot. I'm hoping I can also use the rods as bottom bashing outfits if need be as well but this is not critical.
My mode of fishing is lure trolling, mainly using bibles

I've used Black NCP with Silver metallic under then the overwrap with black metallic and that worked well.

You wouldn't happen to have some of the SiC versions available, the LBSG would you?

100. Fuji BLG Guides
G'day Guys,
Does anyone know if these have been dropped from Fuji's product line? They are the heavy boat/trolling single foot guides.
They no longer appear in the Angler's Resource catalogue and I can't find them on Mudhole's site anymore either.
Have Fuji stopped making them or have AR just stopped imprting them into the US?
Cheers

Wayne,
I'm sure one of the sponsors on the left would have some, I'm just not sure who.
Maybe someone else could chime in and help?

Bill, thanks for the info. I had a look at the photos and that is pretty much what I'm after, except longer!
Wayne, I'm no expert but flocking uses short fibres (nylon in the case of rod grips) that are blown or electrostatically attracted to an object on which there is a coat of glue. The fibres embed themselves into the glue at 90 degrees to the surface. The surface ends up non-slip, warm an

Sweet, Thanks Tom. Just what I wanted to hear. Should make a nice grip and I don't think I've ever seen one around here with that sort of grip so a bit different too.
Cheers

G'day Guys,
I'm sure I read some where on the forum that a lot of trolling/standup rods used to have flocked grips. I assume that they fell out of favour (on factory rods) purely on a cost basis as EVA and hypalon are cheaper to make and quicker to install.
I'm assuming that flocked grips still make very good grips for trolling rods. Would flock over a rail rod grip make a good foregrip for

105. Re: Guide Alignment
Chris,
I find the same. For me, trying to align guides inside in my workshop is almost impossible. I'll always wait until I can get outside in good light to do a final alignment.

I just clamp a bit of 40mm PVC pipe in the vice on my workbench. My vice has offset jaws so this sets the pipe at a very nice 45 degrees. I have a section of "I" beam that I use as an anvil so I tie my line to that. Seems to work OK and cheap too!!

Gentlemen, I concur!
I ordered a small amount of parts, inlcuding as a matter of coincidence, some tuna cord for a gaff handle. The service from @#$%& is exceptional and the package arrived at my door in Oz in much quicker fashion than I had anticipated.
Thankyou @#$%&!!

Hi Fernando,
Not that I'm an expert (I've only done a few grips liike this) but I glue the grips up on a mandrel using contact cement, then shape on my lathe, then install on the rod as normal.

G'day Guys,
I've just bought myself a gaff for tuna. The handle is anodised aluminium and as such a bit slippery. I am thinking that some tuna cord wraps in appropriate places would improve the grip. So my questions are:
1/ If I go with a cord grip, should I then seal it with urethane finish?
2/ If I don't use cord, what is a good alternative? EVA grips?
Any thoughts apreciated.

G'day Guys,
I had the pleasure of meeting Paul last week.
He very kindly gave me some old style guides so that I could do a repair on a couple of rods that belonged to a friend. He also went above and beyond by dropping them in to my work and also supplying more guides than I needed.
A true gentleman and I hope that one day I can somehow return the favour.
Cheers

Guys,
Thanks for your input both here and to those who have emailed me directly, it is much appreciated.
Paul, I'd love to take you up on your offer. I'll send an email soon regarding what guides and tops I need.
Regards and thanks

G'day Guys,
I have volunteered to try and repair some rods for a friend. They are quite old fibreglass rods and have guides that have a white shock ring and a black centre insert. In some cases I need actual guides and in others tip tops. Are these style of guides still available, and if so, who carries them?
I also need some old style metal ferrules to complete some repairs on the same rod

114. Re: How to do it
Ken,
The thing that springs to mind for me would be the stuff they use to make trolling lures with soft heads. It guess it is some sort of two part clear moulding silicon/rubber. You may have to make some moulds and then cast the grips. The stuff doesn't look like it is really water clear either, based on the lures I have seen made with it. I also have no idea where you would get it and it wou

Gavin,
I, like Bill, have done a bit of drafting in my time.
I'm not sure that an ink pen would be all that great to write on a blank with. They are meant to be held dead vertical during use and if you cant them one way or the other the edge of the nib does tend to dig in and may scratch the blank or finish. You may be able to modify your writing style to suit, but I reckon you would only b

119. Grips for game rods
G'day Guys,
I'm contemplating my first game rod (will most likely be a 24kg standup tuna stick) and would like some input re foregrips (the rear grip will be a slick butt).
There are so many options I don't know where to start:
Hypalon - maybe too soft and therefore not comfortable over the long haul
EVA - harder but more easily damaged
Shrink tube over EVA - maybe solves damage proble
