Eric, Just got home and remeasured the guides. The wire flys are at .028 oz and the minima's are .014 oz. I don't recall who made the flys. Yes, I do realize that this is an "apples to bananas" comparison. It was never meant to be a head to head type of comparison. I was just shocked that I could utilize the minimas (no knots to pass) and save the amount of weight that I did.

Marc, Depending on what type of line will be utilized I will normally use 25,12,6 or 20,10,5 and then the runners. I prefer the latter for braid and mono 10lb and under. I use VS3's, the Batson Y frame and the Fuji y's also. Tom

So, I got it my first Minima's last evening. I quickly compared them to the single foot wire fly guides I had in the house and was really shocked by how much lighter they were. I know the guide sizes were not equal so that obviously would make a noticible difference but I compared 5 number 3 wire fly guides at a weight of 8 grams to the 5 number 3 minims at a weight of 2 grams. I see now why thes

Bill is right on track. Ensure that you have the rod level. I measure to the center of the blank at each support and shim as required. I've not done the number of rods that many here have done but ALL of mine have been turned by hand and I have had GREAT results. Just make sure that you don't put on an excessive amount of finish (easier to add a second coat vice trying to repair the first). Follo

973. Re: XP840
Bill I have a 1" dowel I carry in the plethora of tackle I take out and simply wrap the braid around a few times and normally I just straighten out the hooks on the little spinners and simply bend back when I get to the boat (obviously not in any type of tournament situation to worry about a few lost bass or panfish). Spencer, Let me know what you are looking for regarding the micros, I put in an order last year and got 100 of 6,5,4 and I think I got 50 each of the 3,2.5 and 2.0. Tom

975. Re: XP840
Spencer, although it is not built quite the same as Bob's set up I've got it wrapped with Batsons black and blue zirconiums. I started with a 20VS3 and worked down to 2.5mm runners. I wrapped it with med gray and blue metallic.. came together pretty nicely. I do wish that I would have put the 2.0mm's on this on too. i have an RX7 version of the blank and that is what put on it.. nice and ligh

bill when I go to braid, I use1-4lb and typically don't use a leader as it doesn't make a difference in the color water that I am fishing. Tom

977. XP840
I just wanted to say a good word about yet another excellent product from Batson. I finally got off of my but and built up my XP840 that I got 2 years ago. I built it with carbon grips and their High End butt cap. I was using a 1/64 ounce spinner (bettle spin type) last evening and on 4lb yozui mono I could actually feel the blade turning! INCREDIBLE. caught tons of panfish for the young in to re

Greg, Give the boys at Swampland a call, they should be able to hook you up with a very similar blank. They will not dissapoint you what so ever, they are a first class run operation that truely cares about their customers! Tom

Greg, You should be able to cut 6 inches from a 2C60MF or a 3C60MF and have what you are looking for. Just make sure you cut from the south boud end of the stick.

wow, it seems as there are a bunch of GREAT options. I may pick up a "few" for "research" or that is how I am going to sell it to the wife! For starters, I will certainly try the Anglers Roost and then either the TRION, or one of the American made options. Thanks a TON gentlemen. Tom

984. fly reels
Ok, I realize that this is RODBUILDING but can I get some suggestions for a good fly reel? They will be going on the new 5 weights that I am working on, they will be used for panfish so I don't need anything super special. Thanks, Tom

Ron, Good point, I have noticed on bass builds if there is heavy duck weed or scum on the water it will get into the guides and can foul them up along with cotton wood fuzz as well. As I am not familiar with snake guide sizing do you feel the single foot snake 3's would be optimal in these conditions or can I go smaller? (I appreciate the help, my Mom was blown away with your shop while she w

well, I just tried to get the fly line through some of the 2.0 mm's. NOPE, doesn't fit but it will easily fit into a 2.5 mm. Do you feel I would be loosing anything by using these guides over a single foot snake? would the weigh more than the snake? I would tape a set of each up and do a bit of test casting but I don't have any of the snakes to test with. Thanks, Tom
