TOM: Thanks Tom, I did not know that! Learn something new everyday! One of these days I will sit down and take some time to learn it, becuase I was very uniformed as I thought it also meant a flyline number. Paul

TIM: If I can chime in and give one last piece of advice that has been said already...Bill is so correct on this and I think that you are getting waaaaaaay wrapped around the wheel and want absolutes...there are none. Sure the CCS is a great and useful tool for a starting point, but you have a starting point already when you buy the blank; the line weight recommended by the manufacturer.

PHIL: Excellent point and very well said sir. Hauling increases the load (bend) considerably while not having to increase the stroke speed. Paul

TIM: I have absolutly no idea why you are confused-what part are you confused on? Yes, I NEVER use slow action rods and have not since I was 11 years old. I dont like them; never have and never will. Why? They lack power to deliver a long distance cast into a moderate wind. Fortunatley, I never got hung up with the marketing industry; I based my opnions on actual feel and fishing experien

Russ.... To answer your posted question; my preference is NEVER! Now, having said that, and in my years of fly casting instruction, it would be "personnal preference." It would be "better" for an individual to use a slower action IF the person has had the opportunity to cast the various actions. IMHO, the bottom line is if the person "prefers" the slower a

Having been born and raised in Wisconsin, and living in Alaska for the past 23 years, I can assure you that sub-temps have nothing to do with rod breakage. Tom hit the ball outta the park....Temp has nothing to do with rod breakage... I fish and bend my float rods HARD in 10 degree F temps with no failures what-so-ever. If your breaking rods at below O, it is pure irony. And, there would

If your fishing my ole stomping grounds, the Great lakes, I know what you are talking about and I agree with Kerry's professional accurate recommendation. Great Lakes Chinooks will school ya with an 8# rod for the most part. Sure, it can be done but with much more fish fatigue. Paul

IMHO the 7 weight is spot on. An 8 loads the rod a bit too much...and I'm one to like a rod loaded heavy....

Ask yourselves this.....What blank has been introduced into the market that has rivaled the GLX or IMX? They've been on the fly rod market for over 10 years...the IMX well over 10 years! They are not "my" prefered blank to use due to the cost.... So where are the advances? Help me out...I'm open-mined.... Tapers surely dont make anything advances, just different.

For what it's worth... From their websight: Armor All® Original Shine Protectant contains water-based silicone emulsions, surfactants, and ultraviolet light inhibitors, humectants, dispersants and gloss enhancers. I know when I spoke with 3M Scientific Anglers reps, they would ALWAYS discourage the use of Armor All for the above reasons. Of course they wanted you to buy their product, b

IMHO, most 5 weights are not the best choice to learn how to cast with. Wind plays havoc with them and often times discourages the caster. Plus a 5 weight is a poor choice for distance casting unless you have been under the wing of Steve Rajeff or the late Tom White. In my school, I used 7 weights for my students. Paul

KIRK.... Hello fellow Alaskan! I built a 14 foot rainshadow with a 15-30 line rating a while ago for a guy and he loves it. I love it to and I can cast a 1 oz weight a city block! I built it in spinning rod fashion as he and I booth loath casting reels. (I can hear it now you casting reel die-hards!) Fact is, Kings and butts can be caught by shore here, but it takes some timing to get

STEVE: I understand what you're saying and it makes sense to me now! Sometimes a rap in the noggin is all it takes for me!! LOL. I will have to give it a try and see how it works for float rods! Anyway or other way to minimze ice in the guides is worth a whirl to me.... Paul

STEVE: After fishing the same drifts with different sized guides on my float rods, with the same type of line Ande 10#, the smaller guides did in fact freeze up faster based upon those conditions at the time. But like I mentioned, the Janns guides had waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more fishing time than any other guide. Meaning the rod that had the insert guides, had to be cleared much more

Roger... I know what you are saying and as a 20 plus year fire service instructor, I concur with you about learning methods. But my point is, people need to think like me. LOL just kdding. All kidding aside, some folks have to be given "tough rod building love." "Tough rod building love" is: one demontsrates the some basics, refer to them great illustartions, tell t

BOB.... I agree with you 100%, as I have been in that spot several times. I disagree with Ben 100%. My job as a rod builder is NOT to grow the craft...sure I can help and assist even a friend...But my God, some people just need to wein themselves off and break down and buy a book. Rod building is not rocket science; although you may not be able to tell that by a few topics lately...LOL I

If the "Roberts Roll" is the same as a spiral wrap, it wouldn't be applicable for a fly rod, therfore it would not accomplish anything in my eyes. It would be a very miserable rod to fish with! Did the guy say "why" he wants the Roberts Roll?

No problem, I understand, and please accept my apologies all. However, I did not call any sponsor on the left a gangster for the record. But if a business is going to "grossly overcharge" for a service or item... well, I don't know of any other word to use other than extortion. Maybe there are some synonyms that I should have used-but I'm not that smart. It's just a VERY sore s
