After using flex lites for many rods, I will use these rods over Recoils. Everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Why? More cost effective. Have not grooved. Recoils don't really recoil in the cold. And last but not least, I do not like the feel of my line when it goes through the recoils. Does not feel as smooth as Flexlites...

I have to ask you guys, after 30+ years of fly fishing, I do not know what "traditional action" is. Is it another term for slow action? Just wondering!
Thanks,
Paul

Roger....
I gotta disagree with not applying multiple finishes. I think the job is better accomplished with two coats; one thin coat, and a second finish coat. Also, warming the finishes makes mixing the two parts easier and creats less bubbles when using a shot glass to mix in.

Hey Spencer...
I too have that rod. I remember when Steve Rajeff and Tom White showed that rod to me when it first came out many moons ago. I landed about a 55# Chinook on it. (Not that I condone that rod for that large of fish....)
Anyway...your mention of that rod brought back many good memeories with it.

Yes, the GL# blanks will be a thing a of the past.
Also, IMHO, stick with the 9 footer. Much better line control in terms of roll casting, mending, pick more line up off the water, etc...This will be of great value in MI as well as FL.
I like the RX7 when it comes to performance and then price. They are a MED-FAST action. Also, I, like most of the forum members, have herd that Dan Craft

Oh no problem Jim, I was trying to get some razz out of ya. I'm glad my .02 provided you some insight. Also, let me extend an invitation to you if you ever come to Alaska, I will guide you in the right direction and offer some guidance for ya...
And if lakes are all that you have, that is ok as well as you know...Better to have have something than nothing at all. Also, I find it exciting to

If I may add this into the equation...
Fighting a 30" rainbow in a lake is one thing and can be done with fly rods less than 5 weights (Even though I don't condone it and I didn't encourage it during my flyfishing schools.), but put the same 30" fish in a river, where the depth and velocity of the current are against you, and that same 30" fish is gonna smoke you with a 5 weight

Jim,
I have to ask, besides the inland lakes, what size are the rivers that you will be fishing trout for? If they are actual streams and creeks, then a spey rod is not the tool to pick out of the tool box. If they are small creeks, you could do the same type of swinging and casting with a single handed rod than a spey. Alos, you don't have to have a spey rod to spey cast...
I also agree

Hey MO:
They are float rods, and are generally 3-4 peices. I prefer the 3 piece rods more, but most folk like the 4 piece better.

MO:
Thanks for explaining that; I knew you had a reason-your a smart guy. But I'm gonna go against the grain here.............
It would stand to reason, at least in my head, that the longer a rod is, would result in a "SLIGHLTY" higher PROBABILITY and RISK, in breakage. The rods I build are usually 13-16'.
just my spin....

148. Re: switch rod
Spey rod blanks will work all day long...Now, it will depend if you want a fast action or moderate action. Ask the customer if he/she has a preference.
Also, ask what the most targeted species of fish is gonna be, as well if it is going to be used in a river or just casting off of a pier or such.
