I think what has be considered when going to a “moderate action” such as with a crankbait rod (so as to keep the fish engaged with constant hook pressure on the trebles without pull out- shock absorber), is that a lower powered rod may be called for. Otherwise, the “moderate action” tip would likely be stiffer than a higher powered rod with a “fast” action. Many times when discussing

Mike, Because NFC’s and other manufacturers willingness to provide us CCS data has, in part, triggered the need for a user-friendly means to convert the ERN values they’re posting into more usable (arguably) power values (Cents or weight) so as to facilitate blank selection.

Tom, You say “the Rosetta Stone chart only goes so high thus it would be impossible for you to ever encounter an ERN figure that wasn't already directly related to number of cents on that same chart.” NFC has made the “impossible” possible! I’m glad I’m not the only one confused by the facts. Anyway, I give up! Every thing is fine the way it is. I for one, can convert the ERNs giv

The Rosetta Stone only goes to 173c; the URRS article provides a “back door” means to interpolate ERN to Cents up to 303.5c; and from 303.5 up, its to be done with the previously described graph. Doesn’t say much for continuity, but do-able with dubious accuracy. If we could somehow harness all the energy being generated by this “issue” and apply it to making the Rosetta Stone Table al

Until a simple conversion chart is published giving the Cent to ERN values (a continuation of Table A shown in the “Rosetta Stone”), there will continue to be discrepancies when translating Cents to ERN or ERN to Cents…especially using a graph (or interpolation). Also, If Hanneman would amend the existing Table ‘A’ (or commission someone to do it for him), he would continue to “own”

Guys…I gotta tell ya… I’m baffled by the seemed reluctance to make the “extended” ERN values public…… especially now that they have been derived. A while back when NFC started publishing their CCS values, they prudently used the Cent values since the higher ERN values had not been universally established for the System. They have since dropped the Cents and are using the ERN values

Jeffrey. More often than not, it's a matter of personal preference. I use one guide per foot of rod length and a wrapped on single foot for the tip-top. What works best for me is “all on top”, Fuji TLSG’s 5.5 (butt guide), 4.0, then 3.5’s to the tip.

Bill, You said: “While I do not understand the use of the term “restoring creditability” in this context, I do believe this so called “incomplete system” was essentially completed with the publication of the URRS. I also believe it already is “truly universal for ALL blanks”. Also said: “Since its introduction, conversion tables to ERN have been constructed throughout the worl

I think that if Dr. Hannaman would simply extend the Cents/ERN table as shown in the original article and the Rosetta Stone, it would restore the credibility to the “incomplete system” and go a long ways to make it more user friendly and truly universal for ALL blanks. He said “I believe anglers are more comfortable saying "I fish with an ERN=5 rod" than saying "I fish wit

Bill, I’m not sure I know what you mean by “I am presently loading similar length bass blanks with "900 pennies" which are not as powerful as the NFC blanks listed.” The most powerful of the NFC blanks listed at an ERN of 26.9 would be a little more than 300 Cents (331c). Is the “900” a "typo" or something other than 1/3 deflection of length? Jon, I applaud your

No, the chart on the “Rosetta Stone” only goes to 173 Cents and has no formula. Volume 10-4 of RodMaker has a chart (table 2) that cross references Cents from ERN, but you’d have to interpolate to derive the number of Cents to ERN. Since the ERN is derived from the number of Cents to deflect blank 1/3 of length, an updated/expanded chart giving the Cents converted to ERN would be useful. I

Jon, The CCS data is very helpful. I, also, would like to see blank weights given because power to weight ratio is very important to me. I wish someone would publish a conversion chart from Cents to ERN and vice versa (...or provide the fomula), that would accomodate higher power blanks (300+ cents).

Mo, I’ve been bending the butt guides of spinning rods to get additional height. It might be worth noting that the remaining foot length of the BYAG and TYSG after bending, is no shorter, than the standard TATSG. Strength or metal fatique has not been an issue. Rods have seen quite a bit of use. I'll email you a couple of pictures.

Alex, There are others of us that are in the same boat. It’d be nice to have a chart or formula that converts Cents to ERN so that we can take advantage of other aspects of the Common Cents System.

Tom, I hope the article will have a “Cents to ERN Conversion” chart that will encompass all rods. Unless I’ve missed another published list, the “Rosetta Stone” only goes to 173 Cents and URRL article (Table 2) only goes to 303.5 (and is not linear---I.E. converts ERN to Cents).

I have retrofitted many of my older pistol gripped rods by adding extensions. They've worked out really well. On those that I didn't want to remove the existing guides, I used a piece of scrap rod blank for the extension that had the proper inside diameter to fit to the outside diameter of the blank where I had removed the pistol grip. I used the large end of the tapered extension (which later f

Fuji also made a “glue in” type of handle, where the adapter bushing was epoxied to the blank and then epoxied into the handle bore (1/2”dia.x 1 ¾ deep). It was lighter than the “chuck” type and more stable. I never had a failure.

Actually, the “low profile” reels have been around since the early 80’s. I used the Shimano Magnumlite 2000’s at the time (I still have one), and they’re about the same height as my Chronarch 50MG’s. The parallel offset of the old handles was about 3/8” lower and the lower center of gravity was very noticeable. It was also very comfortable, especial

For what it’s worth…..one advantage that the “old” set-ups (Lew’s and others) had was that the reel seat was offset from the axis of the blank, lowering the reel in relationship to the rod. With “through handle” construction, the reel sits much higher causing a slight imbalance (top-heavy). I remember the old rods that I rebuilt, that had Fuji “gl

I have rebuilt several older rods that were not “through handle construction”. A couple of them had the old “Lew’s Speed handles”. It was no different than extending any other blank. On some of them, the splice is 3” or 4” ahead of the reel seat and has the appearance that you might see on a telescoping rod, except that it’s wrapped and finished.

Bill and Tom, Funny that you should mention URRS…..I read the article on URRS last night to the point of nausea. You’re right, it does extend the Cents considerably (in a reverse order), but by the time I got to the chart (table 2), I was numb from reading the text. I think subconsciously, it entered my mind that I could interpolate the Cents to get a “back-door” reading

Thanks Bill. Can you give us (me) a clue as to how you derived that number? It would be extremely helpful if the conversion could be made available to us (me). I can’t help but wonder if I’m not the only one that’s frustrated because the Cents/ERN conversion chart is incomplete(?). My Bass rods are shorter than most, but are comparable in power ranges to longer (7’

Tom, I can’t speak for Bobby….he tends to think “out-of-the-box” (as opposed to my “out-of-my-mind”), but perhaps he’s perturbed at the implication that a rod’s “rating”, however derived (CCS or otherwise), can predispose someone to accept or reject it for a particular fishing technique or application, especially if the parameters fo
