The gel pen works great for me. This rod wasn't for me, however, and the person who bought it wanted the decals on it.

If the guide has an insert, you’ll want to measure the outside ring diameter or, since the guide is damaged anyway, pop the ring insert out and then measure the inside diameter of the ring.

183. Re: Two Questions
I called a shop that's about 45 mins away after asking here (just happen to remember about them) and asked what they charge. They charge $12 plus tax so $13.08 per guide. I think I'm good with a flat $15. He'd waste more than $2.00 in gas to get to the other shop.

Norm, do you think $15 is Fair? I think that's fair considering it includes everything. Tax, title, out the door price as they say...

187. Two Questions
1. What's the best way to clean winn grips? Soap and water?
2. What do you guys charge for replacing a guide? The one in question is a size 5 single foot. I'm thinking $15 is reasonable for a single foot, one thread color with 3 single trim bands.
Thank you!

I’ll try your method if it ever comes up again. This was the first time with decals as I prefer to write the info, but that was not an option on this rod.

David, I've never had any issue with how I go about applying the finish. This particular decal was just a royal pain. I'm still not 100% happy with how it turned out. As I said earlier, the other decal I put on (my "Built by Me" decal) went on easy as getting me to eat red velvet cake. But it's out of my hair now. It's off to its new home and the owner loves it. :)

Michael, I agree that ProKote is pretty darn clear. I did a rod for my wife with it and it's very clear. In comparing it to the Gen4, however, there's a marked difference. And, my wife's rod hasn't seen the light of day yet. She doesn't go fishing with me very often. I'm pretty new to building so I don't have any builds that are more than a few months old so I can't speak to the longevity of the

I just finished my first rod using Gen4. I like it. Frankly, the only real significant difference I see that makes it stand out to me is how clear it is when it cures. It's a LOT clearer than ProKote or Flex Coat. I haven't had bubble issues with any of the three. Maybe, I mix longer than most. I don't know. Gen4 is the third epoxy I've tried. I still like ProKote the best in terms of working it.

Kendall, I know lots of newer builders such as myself come here for knowledge so I like to share all of my experiences, good, bad or otherwise. :)
Also, for anyone reading this thread, I should add that I don't think this has anything to do with Gen4. I think it would've happened regardless of brand. I was just merely stating what I used.

Set and cured are definitely not interchangeable. It’s on the dryer now. All is well now, thankfully.

And, I have DNA too, in my alcohol burner. I just didn’t think I’d have an issue with the first coat since it was cured. Oh well…

I was putting a second coat of Gen 4 on today and all was going well until I ran into a hiccup with one of two decals. One of them (my name) turned out great, but the other one (rod specs) just wasn't looking right. So, since it already had one coat on it and that one looked fine, I decided I'd take a microfiber with alcohol and gently run it over the decal while the dryer was turning in hopes of

I built one a couple of weeks ago and it didn’t come with one either. I just wrote the specs on it with a fine point nib pen.

10” is too much to cut off on that length rod, IMO. I wouldn’t cut off any more than 6 if it were me.

David, it’s not something I intentionally do. It just seems to vary and since most of my guide spacing (due to testing) usually is the same, I attribute the difference to the handle length.

Daryl Ferguson
Norman, I've also never (in my short time of being a rod builder) had the spacing work out to anything other than progressive.
David, I'm curious as to why you place all of your butt guides at exactly 21 1/2"? Most of mine end up anywhere from 21" - 23". The variation is generally do to the length of the handle. That said, I have an off the shelf rod (Favorite White Bird) that

I almost exclusively build 7’0 rods. I also perform a static load test. I start off by placing the guides, generally speaking, at 49.75, which puts that guide around 21-22” from the reel seat, and work to the tip from there. I always use 10 guides and it’s very rare that I have to move more that one or two. And, those are usually no more than a 1/4” or so at most.
I think guide height probably

No it wouldn’t! It’d be annoying. There’s a reason it’s on page 700, or whatever. Also, one of the nice

I'll let those of you with the debate bone in your bodies debate. I would just like to add, because I feel it germane to the original post, that I have just visited page 1876. Sadly, I did not experience any euphoric sensations. I merely observed that it does, in fact, exist. Logically, after seeing three pages dedicated to the topic of page 1876, I expected to encounter a rod building forum xana

I find the easiest way, for me anyway, is a 3 sided Arkansas stone. It really doesn’t take much to prep the feet. In fact, if you get too carried away, you can easily make as many burs as you clean up.

A better choice, IMO, would be a mini belt sander. You can pick them up for around $50.00.
