Welcome to the forum and Rodbuilding. I am new myself (just built 2 thus far).
Regarding posting pictures the only thing that has worked for me is to post an image using the mobile app (iPhone or Android). I tried posting pics from computer into the pic side of the site and it said they downloaded successfully but I could not find them...
Regarding what makes a custom rod desirable: I thi

Some good discussion on similar topic here:
No personal experience with any of the blanks mentioned but eventually will be building a couple of panfish rods so interested in the discussion

El - lots of other things you could do. Mudhole has an adjustable support to hold and level rod that probably cheaper than buying shelf and clamps (but the clamps are handy for a lot of other stuff). Also, I have seen graph poster board that you could hang on wall to make it easier to to measure deflection. This setup is working for me right now. I need to get some other stuff rearranged in m

Support shelf and tools to level up. Not in pic but you need a tape measure or ruler to measure support distance at 10%

El - nothing fancy for me. Here is my setup:
- Just a shelf that is about 54” above floor
- two clamps
- some shim wood to level blank at support
- a small level to check blank is level at support (or can use smartphone app)
- some bagged up coins of various counts
- paper clip bent to attach to tip-top and hold bagged pennies
- yardstick to measure deflection
- I use a level app that measures

El - thus far I have been using the method Tom Kirkman suggest in the video linked below. Has worked pretty well for me thus far. I haven't tried the "longer pull thru" method yet but may give it a go also and see which one I find easier to work with. Don't get me wrong, all mine haven't been perfect and in a couple cases had to redo but I chalk that up to part of the learning proces

Thanks for sharing several pics of rod drying cabinets. Definitely gives me some ideas on what may work in my space. Getting ready to finish rod#2 and for this one will just have my space heater going while I am home as it gets my workspace up to 70+ pretty easily.
Just out of curiosity are there any potential curing issues with temperature adjustments during the curing process? i.e. while

This is another option that doesn't look too hard and looks pretty cool. Dragon Scales wrap. I may give this a try in the future. I'm thinking a mesh drywall tape would work as the underwrap material. Very nice of you to do the custom work for family/friends at cost of materials. If you are having fun doing it that is most important. Enjoy! If you are able, post a few pictures of your wrap

Unfortunately I don’t have any recommendations as I’m a new builder. However, I am also interested in recommendations on panfish rods so bumping this thread.

Here is another rod I'm trying to finish up before my son heads back to college and then soon thereafter down to Florida for (3) different College Tournaments over Jan/Feb. Hoping it will work decent for throwing Chatterbaits/RattleTraps out in grass flats.
Anyhow, here is data:
Manufacturer , Series, Model ID, IP, AA
MHX, CB Blend, CB 907, 612.5, 74

@EL - The Google Doc currently has compiled all the blanks listed on the RodCents.org site along with all the blanks listed from the OneDrive link. I added some of the blanks listed in this thread but haven't gotten thru all of them yet as it is the most time consuming part (compiling the info out of this thread). Anyhow, that is a work in progress.
Regarding classifying the CCS back into Po

Hello all - working on my 2nd build and have seen several posts on here talking about cutting down/shortening reel seats. I'd like to do that with this build. I'll either be using a Fuji ECSM or two-piece SK grip (not sure just yet).
Anyhow, the questions regarding cutting down seat:
1. What is your tool of choice? Hacksaw, cut-off saw, Dremel, other?
2. Do you need to tape off the portio

Hi all - another thing to mention if you try to view the Google Docs sheet in post above I'd recommend using a computer to view. Mobile device will open it but it is very hard to navigate around and find info you might be looking for.
El - if OK would you add the link to the Google Doc to the top of the thread? That might help folks that want to search for a specific piece of info. Thanks.

All - I started working on compiling all the data that has been posted in this thread (and also had links provided in this thread). Got all the big data sets from the external links and started going thru the posts entering by date. Last post I entered was Michael Danek's on 12/28/22. Also, I added my own data (mostly factory rods with just one recent MHX build. As I get time will continue to

Happy New Year
After finishing up my first build had a couple questions about finish. Wanted to try and include a couple pics so uploaded them on photos side but cannot figure out where they went...? Using computer (Mac) to try and do this but can't seem to figure out where my uploaded pics went...?
Anyhow, for reference my workspace is in my basement and the average temp there is between

El - feel your pain. Working on my first. No issues with fuzziness with thread itself but did have a fuzzy sticking out after pulling thru wrap tie off. Also noticed a couple specks of dust. I waited several days between wrapping and finishing so probably my issue there. Anyhow you are not alone on making some rookie mistakes

First my disclaimer... I am working on my 1st custom build so take my comments as such. Most everything I have learned has been from here or from YouTube videos. What I did after seat assembly was cured out was to "dry fit" all my intermediate guides using rubber bands (or something else strong enough to temporarily hold guides) and then to place the tip-top on permanently using tip-

Hi all - all this info is screaming Spreadsheet or Database. That way you could sort or filter on any value of interest to you. However, before a spreadsheet would do a whole lot of good would need to come to consensus on what "fields" of information are needed. Since this is being crowd sourced wouldn't think you'd want to make the number of fields too high so it will be "easie

I've been reading up on CCS and starting doing some measurements on my current factory rods. Anyhow, one thing that I noticed reading some of the CCS reference info is that there is a bit of discrepancy on how the rod should be oriented when taking measurements. The Simplified Common Cents article says guides up while the Common Cents Quick Tips article says guides should be opposite of how you

El - thanks for starting this thread. This will help me out a bunch since I'm a newbie. I'm in process of measuring all my factory rods to get an idea where they stand. Will post that info once complete. I will use this list of other blank data to figure out where I have some holes and/or replace some rods that I'm not crazy about with my own builds.
Maybe this thread could be made a "

I am working on my 1st build and have most of my guides wrapped and aligned as best I can. I'm building a casting rod and using #4 running guides so difficult to sight down rod with my 50 year old eyes. I was thinking about just throwing a reel with line onto rod/guides and using that for final adjustments before placing finish. Any other tips/tricks from builders to get guide alignment as str

@ Chris - I feel your pain. I'm working on my 1st build. All my running guides are 4's so very small for my clumsy fingers. I started trying tape and that didn't work. Next, I was able to round up the small rubber-bands my kids had used for their braces and those work pretty well. Just have to double or triple them up out near the tip where blank diameter is small. I was also looking at a c

Was curious about best way to cut off a rod blank as well. Do you need to tape off the portion of the blank to remain to minimize having any splintering? Any other prep needed? Also, if you don't have a dremel tool could you use a circular saw or miter saw with a fine blade?
