The only problem I've found with the ring is depending on the flex of the rod the location of the ring changes. At least in my playing with it. Maybe two rings would work, but a guide placed between the butt guide and the first 180 works without a flaw.

They work well for small plastics, spinners, and spoons. Hard to beat as far as an inshore rod for the salt.

Heck I thought this was a labor of love and not work. If it was work, I don't think I would build another rod. I get enough of that during the week.

Don't bath in it. Don't eat it. Don't burn it and don't give it to your pet rats!

It's an artifical bait. They use alot of them here along the Gulf Coast. As a matter of fact, I have a couple of packs in my arsenel.

127. Re: The Perfect Rod
I freat over every rod I build and have cut off many wraps until I thought I got them right.

Just thought about something. You could pour/mold your own arbors for seats or wood grips.

129. Re: Thread color
Bills idea would work, or you could try painting them prior to wrapping.

Granted 10 - 15 lb isn't much but make sure what ever you purchase it can maintain that psi for an extended time.

In Billy's book he uses a method involving wrapping the entire wrap with mono leaving enough space between the threads for the CP to soak the underlying threads. Just before the CP sets up, carefully remove the mono. I've used this method several times now with good results.
Thanks Billy!

Ken, I've bought quite a bit of my off shore stuff from them. It's always been a plesant experience.

134. Re: Life Span
Thanks guys. I knew nothing lasted forever, but have seen rods that have been around and endured many years of use. Just wasn’t exactly sure how to answer the question.

135. Life Span
There was a question asked on another forum about the expected life span of high modulus rods. Do they wear out over time. In other words will the graphite fibers eventually break down and the rod fail from normal use.
After thinking about it, I realized I could not answer the question, so here I am to find out for myself.

If you were to grind or sand (releasing broken fibers into the air, less than 3 microns) then you would have a problem. Simply cross cutting to length shouldn't cause such a release.

137. Re: Guide size help
Bill just measure the inside diam of the frame ring in mm and that is the size of the guide.

138. Re: Painting Blanks
Mark, I have yet to try any of the Testors, but have used quite a few of the Pactra paints. The last time I tried their Met Flake Gold over a base coat, I had to apply several coats to achieve any sort of metal flake finish. It worked, but I had to let it set a couple of days before it could be handled with out damage to the finish.
I was glad it was only in the butt area of a split grip.

You have to be careful when selecting paints for lexon bodies. Some of the paints are not very opaque. Lexon bodies are painted from underneath and the transparent paints are meant to be applied first, then painted over with a opaque color. You see the effect once you look from the top.
Doesn't work well for rods.

I know of no way to completely remove all the finish without doing some damage to the original finish on the blank (not the blank itself). I've always had to either refinish the rod or wrap over those areas once all the finish was removed.

Have used the Createx paints with good results, but have recently started using the laquer model paints for lexon bodies. They airbrush great and come in a multitude of colors.

Hi David. Great job!
The question I have, is how well does the decal hold up as far as fading? I've always heard that the inks don't hold up well to UV's

Depends on the setup, line size, height and width of the spool. But, as a rule always use the smallest guide that will do the job.

If that is true for functionality, then for someone to copy a pattern and wrap that pattern in the same manner as it's inventor... is not artictic ability, but simply a copy of someone else's talent and artictic ability.
True or False?

Just thought of something. Is not the functional part of rodbuilding also an art?

I started out as Ray. I was into the art of rod building. I thought that's what made a custom rod custom. Since finding this site and Tom's mag I've learned more about rod building in a very short time, than I would have ever in a life time totaly on my own.
Thanks to all!!!!!!!!

True, the butt end won’t torque, but I’ve seen the tip almost do a 180 on a conventionally wrap rod, while hooked up on large sharks. That’s why I now spiral wrap all my off shore equipment.
