Oh was the question about whether a casting rod blank will work for spinning ? Of course as Norm said I was referring to the heavy power for throwing super light stuff and to me 5/8 - 3/4 is super light but I exclusively fish saltwater where 2 ounce stuff is considered average weight . I gave up fishing lite freshwater after I got into saltwater fishing and can't say if weight ratings on freshw

I would never ever ask such a question especially to Doug Hannon out of sheer embarrassment because it's as obvious as obvious gets that it's a Stripper/Choke combo guide integrated into a single frame . People tend to get annoyed when you ask them questions that everybody already knows the answer to . All anyone has to do is look at the guide a single time to know what it is . I'm having ver

"The blank is 8-ft long-heavy power-fast tip. will this blank make a decent spinning rod for worms, etc. It will be used sometimes for throwing 5/8- and 3/4-oz" Not a good match obviously , why can't you cancel the second blank order.

What a particular blank weighs and it's length are facts how it performs is all opinion . Over the last few years manufacturer rep's have scheduled casting events for surf rod models where people can test cast different rod models before purchasing . That's all most anglers need , they know that the rod they're test casting can be made more to their liking by using different components and dif

"Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment, I look at that rod I built over 50 years ago I marvel at how crude it is compared to the rods I build today" My whole intention going in was to just build a select few rods and then I would be done but then a realized if I just build a few rods they will all be horrific looking because I'm just

Kent , lets try this again it's NOT COMPLICATED !!! What I said about the guide is 100% correct , it's a Stripper/Choke combo guide one look at it tells you that . OF COURSE American Tackle and Mudhole call it a stripper that's to make it easy to understand for the average rod building person . Any semi experienced rod builder knows it's a Stripper/choke combo guide JUST LOOK AT IT C'MON .

When using light braid in particular , it can be extremely difficult to tell how efficient a spinning rod guide layout performs because light braid will cast really well even with poor guide layouts due to it's limp suppleness. The best way I have found to gauge just how effective & efficient guide train layouts are is by test casting with a heavier braid then you plan on fishing with . T

I'll agree to disagree on all your other posts but not what the Microwave guide is . The main guide of the Microwave system is a larger stripper and a choker guide combination contained in a single guide . Just a stripper guide would be a Fuji KL25H . The Choker is not a part of it.

The Microwave guide DOES NOT start with the smallest stripper Kent c'mon . The larger outer ring BEFORE the smaller choker guide is the stripper and it does make a difference . I don't care when Ray figured out that a larger spool will lead to longer casts than a smaller spool or when Ray came to the conclusion that a smaller diameter stripper seems to work more efficiently then a larger diamete

If you really want to see what the best of the best spinning setup's are capable of build the rod around the specs of a specific reel model and specific line type and strength . You can really dial in truly astonishing performance levels if you get it right meaning choosing guides that perfectly match and line up with the height, diameter and design of the spinning reel spool . It does take a l

So Ray Scott figured out that a larger diameter spool will outcast a smaller diameter spool and came out with the Super Caster spinner , I don't call that groundbreaking I call that 'Basic common sense' . He also came to the conclusion that when using light line a smaller stripper guide and a gradual reduction in guide sizes from the stripper moving forward will produce a more efficient guide

Here's an idea that I have employed myself when having a difficult time deciding . Purchase a Microwave set and a Fuji KR guide train ( Not a Fuji KR kit ) at the same time , when they arrive together set one up taping on the guides and test cast . You have an entire month to return the ones you decide against this is the only way to be absolutely certain you make the best choice . As long a

You can make accuracy much easier for yourself by building a rod with ultimate accuracy in mind . Try casting a rod with oversized guides including running guides & an oversized tiptop with a super thin supple line and then do the same with guides including runners and a tiptop that are much smaller in diameter and you will quickly realize how restricting the line to much less movement insid

I don't remember Decal connection mentioning using CP but I have heard other people on this forum mentioning using CP with decals . From Decal Connections website: THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! Before you begin the application process, place a thin coat of epoxy on the blank where you will be placing the decal and let dry. This step provides a flawless surface for the decal to adher

Without knowing the reel and line choice it's tough to recommend anything . Never mind didn't realize this was a casting outfit.

Yup , Decal connection does indeed recommend applying a thin coat of epoxy before using the decals and it works incredibly well . When I purchase decals from them I always purchase at least two because I sometimes screw the first attempt up . Saves me the time ordering a second and waiting for it to be delivered.

Don't forget "Line choice" meaning braid on the lighter side is by far the biggest reason the Microwaves and KR concept work so well . I have a spinning reel that has over a 75 MM spool diameter and with braid UNDER 20 pounds and under the Microwave 30/10 , Fuji KL25H and KL20H are the best performing longest and smoothest casting stripper and stripper combo choke setup's that I have

"Can anyone point me to data that looks at the casting distance one might get from them vs, for example, a Fuji KR Concept setup" There is no data on that . I agree 100% about a Microwave guide setup and a Fuji KR setup essentially performing very similar in distance and feel . I myself prefer the Fuji KR guides and one of the biggest reasons is exactly what you stated which is

I agree about the cosmetic damage with the finish worn off due to the rod being rested on a rail or something similar but I can't say the rod was overloaded none of us except the Captain and the OP know that .

It's amazing to me how many advertise rods by showing how big a fish it could land or how far it can bend . I've run into many anglers that praise their rods and insist it's the best by it being able to land a large drum . There are people not on this forum but some others who are affiliated with a certain rod company and they do nothing but post pics of the largest fish they can and apparently

Rod looks like it's been in some real battles with typical rod rash . The guide looks like it's been stepped on because it's slightly deformed but I don't think it's fatal . I'm not an experienced offshore angler and don't know much about offshore tackle so I can't say with certainty .

I'm also an extreme minimalist and refuse to add anything to a blank if it doesn't help in the performance department and added weight of any kind is detrimental to performance , I don't even use winding checks . That having been said , I don't like bland and ugly either and make my wraps as colorful and eye catching as possible BUT they are exceedingly short and end immediately at the end of t

" Will masking tape be able to hold them" The answer is 'Yes' , masking tape has been used for decades to temporarily attach guides to a blank for static testing and test casting . The pressure exerted when using the two line method isn't on the guides it's on the rod tip so no worries but even if static testing with one line the guides will hold because the pressure is spread out a

As far as spinning rods are concerned I believe the choice in guide design , size and placement based on the reel and line type you plan on using the most is what determines whether a rod is going to be a performer or not . I'm convinced that 'Spine' has absolutely nothing to do with building a better rod and I say that because I followed the spine finding and spine orientation process when I

Sounds like Shag's rod was built on the straightest axis to me . "Standing backwards and get the casting plug to flip up and land in their shirt pocket" Never heard of guys being able to cast into people's pockets , that's like trying to cast into a slightly oversized coin slot . Amazing

I have never found Fuji's KB and KT guides to need additional grinding/shaping, their foot is tiny and very thin as it is but all the suggestions above work very well if an individual does feel the need .
