If you mean can they handle a little over their listed weight ratings then the answer is a resounding 'Yes' . They got very serious backbone . The 1-4 ounce rated rods really can whip 4 ounces with power and the same can be said for the 2-6 ounce rated rods . I much much much prefer the M Fast rated rods NOT a fan of the M Moderate.

I LOVE the RodGeeks 10 and 10'6 " surf blanks , I have two 10'6" 2-6 MH powered rods and find them absolutely ideal to use fishing the surf all along the Atlantic coast . I also have the 10' medium powered and 8 foot medium powered surf blanks as well . Incredibly lightweight with great responsive action. The 70/30 split on the 10'6" models doesn't bother me they are still easy to

I use the homemade wooden V rod supports as well and used felt to protect the blank at first but scrapped the felt in favor of peel and stick foam sheets because I also used the wooden V blocks for hand wrapping blanks and drying blanks and I found the felt attracted static electricity and DUST that landed on my finish so no more felt. If you have a chuck that runs true and you make sure your

Toms right about balance having little to do with sensitivity , any added weight will ALWAYS affect sensitivity in a negative way . The reason people think that weight helps with sensitivity is the way they percept the differences . If adding weight to a rod makes it feel more balanced and allows you to fish it more comfortably your perception will be that weight added sensitivity when in real

Of course he doesn't know everything Ben nobody does . He's clearly very very sure about the 32" positioning though.

Listen to Tom , he knows this stuff. The 27X method for choke guide positioning is used more than any other method on earth for good reason . If Tom says 32" you best set it at 32" because this is why Tom was born , to educate us lower life forms on everything rod building related.

Although I haven't had any runners pull out in all my years when I think about it I'm actually more comfortable having a small runner break free when being jerked & twisted instead of staying in place and having the foot possibly dig into the blank from all that force. I have two VERY expensive surf blanks where the upper part of the rod is extremely thin walled with a modulus per square inc

Well you say you have a tip heavy rod as it is , what do you think happens when you use slightly more thread on each single foot guide to complete a locking wrap . Lets just say it certainly won't make the rod feel less tip heavy . Since you admit you're brand new to wrapping and building it may be a good idea but I have never used any type of locking wrap and never had a guide even come close

I second what Kent said , no locking wraps ever even with Fuji KT's and I never had a guide loosen or pull out on me .

Most if not all of ALPS guides have S-6 316 stainless frames . It's a slightly softer steel with better corrosion resistance then 304 stainless . I haven't had issues with Fuji or ALPS guide frames.

I went to the website and believe it or not most of the rods they sell are not ice rods . They actually have a designated Fly Rod that's just as short , the others are spinning rods and baitcasting rods . The reviews are 'Off the charts' positive but they average $150.00 a piece . As they say to each their own . Not going to work for me , I think there are better options for a surf rod bu

I only use Fuji KL-H , KW 10M's , RV , KB and KT Fuji's and out of 7 different set's of RV 25 and RV 16's I prepped two of them all the rest I found satisfactory to wrap as they come. I believe most do prep the Fuji's they get especially the larger versions.

I have used Threadmaster regular and lite and Generation IV regular viscosity and all work fantastic . The Threadmaster and Generation IV are from Andy Dear . Searching for his name in the archives will provide endless reading. Threadmaster regular dries the quickest and has the shortest working time while Threadmaster lite dries much slower and has a longer working time . Generation IV has a

As Kent said to each their own . Good luck finding a builder who says his highly decorative rods are not extremely fishable , I have never heard a rod builder say " Yeah, I really overdid it and hate fishing it . Constructing flashy rods for children is an entirely different thing to me , they're children and have to have specific colors that match because if they don't match it will not

I've been using different diameter rubber butt caps that are easily interchangeable for holding the end of my blanks for drying and wrapping purposes . Fit nice and snug but that wire contraption is pretty ingenious .

Any idea when NFC plans to expand the HMx -ray material into other rod categories because I remember early on when they first came out in the description it said that the HMx-ray material would be expanding into other rod categories at some point . Thank you kindly

I also don't use anything less than a size 18 seat . Seems many seat styles and options are available for 17 size reel seats but not 18 which I've always been somewhat disappointed about.

I'm also an extreme minimalist like Kent but if you look at rodbuilding.org's photo section it will become very very clear that most builders seem to be half and half for appearance and function. For example pay close attention to the guide wraps in particular , a very large percentage are exceedingly long with many wraps continuing past the end of the actual foot that are longer than the ent

Kent , c'mon now lol. You can't compare reels that have been subjected to that level of saltwater intrusion without any maintenance whatsoever and say these reels have a gear issue . Look at those samples you provided . Any reel at any price will be just as bad if subjected to that level of saltwater inside without being completely dismantled asap and thoroughly cleaned and re greased .

Was just reading a thread from this website from the past , I found it quite interesting . I should say I have used Flexcoat CP on a few rods when I wrapped with non CP Nylon thread and after applying it and letting it dry I knew something was wrong . Just had a dull look to it . I decided to rewrap a few guides and try again and this time the threads had great brilliance and superb color rete

I have off the rack rods that still look and function perfectly after two decades or more of use but they are much pricier off the rack models . Well over the $100.00 mark , the cork is very very good and it came with top of the line Alps guides at the time .

I ordered a few blanks from CTS and had to pay a design fee since what I wanted wasn't offered by CTS . I have some 8 and 9 foot blanks , a few 11 footers and my latest are two 10'6 " surf specific blanks and after a ridiculous amount of testing and retesting I went with an RV 25 , RV 16 , KW10M to a KB 5 choke to KT 5 runners on the heavier rated model and a KL 25H , KL10H to a KL 5.5M

Kent are you aware that the FI and FJ Stradics along with the Shimano Sustain FE and FG reels all have cold forged Aluminum drive gears ? I actually have the early 2000 Shimano Reels catalogs and they're indeed cold forged aluminum drive gears just like the new FL and slightly older FK Stradic's which only are offered up to the 5000 size instead of 8000 size that Shimano used to offer with their
