"competent artificial lure casters point the rod at the bait during retrieve, minimizing the importance of rod "feel"."
I guess you can call me incompetent then.
As I almost always keep my rod at an angle from lure n line's path so I can feel the bait through the rod.

It Would suite me if all the big rod companies stoped using Micro guides!
When Micro's were first introduced they were exclusively a Custom Builders niche, to aid in building better more efficient rods Allowing us to provide better products then the bigger companies.
Custom builder Bill Steven's (also a marketing genius) began marketing the Micro concept to some of the larger rod companies f

I've not used a runner guide larger then 3-mm in over ten years now, and not had the first person ask me to put larger then micro guides on a rod since they were introduced.

I've been using Batson's 8 ft XP964 popping blank for square bill crank baits for close to 10 years now.
It is amazing for that technique
Also great for top water prop baits

if it is new or close to being new.
It's antique value, may be enough that you would not want to diminish it from use.
Might be worth doing some research to find out

One other control factor I forgot to mention in the above post.
I only build bass rods, so this may not work out with some of your heavier salt water stuff.
But one other variable you can control to keep your results honest.
I always "ALWAYS" use the same size weight for test casting. A 1/4 oz lead weight, (plastic weights bonce to much affecting your variables)
Doesn't m

To answer your question:
That depends on what you are trying to accomplish with your builds.
If you are more or less-just an "assembler" some one who uses standard recipes that you find on blank suppliers web pages or web forums for your builds,
or.
An assembler claiming to be a custom builder who uses the exact same guide spacing. for rods in specific model blanks, with out tak

2 times what Phil said
some times depending on blank, not much difference in distance
on other blanks can be quite substantial.

Have been building/ using rods with carbon since 1979
Fishing many multi 4 and 5+ day tournaments, and have never had a blister from one.
have had the heel of my palm get a little sore after 4 or 5 days, but never bad enough to affect my fishing.
Keep in mind that I always use/create a smooth finish. because of the concern that a rough finish would cause the concern you have.

I cannot confirm or deny who builds Batson's blanks Whether it's NFC, or St Croix, or Lamaglass or another US company for its domestic blanks' or what ever company builds their offshore blanks.
What I can confirm, especially with their Eternity and Immortal lines, is that: Batson's design team chooses the materials, develops the actions, lay up patterns, and power of each blank to meet their

Love you too, Understand exactly what you're saying, besides Bill, lost my tournament partner of 30 years last may, there a lot of things I wish could say to him now.
I really miss Bill also, we spent hours and hours on the phone and emailing
Yes still building some stuff with the 2-mm guides and looking at doing one shortly with some 1-mm guides.
Not sure I'm going to like

Brian asked for direct honest feedback.
If he had not been mature enough to handle it, He would not have asked.
There are no apologies need. I respect the fact he asked.
My request is:
If I ask for advice on a build, or if I might have messed up a build because things didn't turn out the way I expected..
That builders on this site be honest in that feed back even if it hurts my feelings

The IMMP76MH-TC is an excellent blank and I highly recommend it, but it does not have that magical factor that the XP964 has.
If you can still find the XP964 I would go that route, if not, you can't go wrong with the IMMP76MH-TC
The XP is another blank that I hoarded a couple extra away, just in case.

In the recent thread on "point blank rod sensitivity"
Heb posted this paradoxical question: "Is there any rod out there that is perfection in every aspect'
It got me to thinking about perfect blanks, or are there perfect blanks for specific applications. (no one blank suites all applications)
Over the years in some brand product lines, there seams to be that one magical blan

Tom's, Jason's, and Herb's last 3 post are the correct responses to my questioning your thought process.
You can not add anything in front of the reel seat to improve sensitive, only rob from it.

"Brian, to get the most sensitiity out of your rod install a 3" to 4" carbon fiber foregrip and learn to use it."
What would give you the impression that adding an un-needed fore grip of any length would add sensitivity to a rod?

If i hit you on the top of the head with a one pound feather pillow using all my strength, you will most likely get mad. Turn around and take a swing at me.
If I hit you on top of the head with a one pound ball peen hammer using one quarter of my strength.
Some one is going to call you an ambulance, and you will have no idea who to swing at.
