Rod bond doesn't dry clear. It's not made for coating threads. Flex Coat, Threadmaster, and Pro Kote, to name a few are especially made for coating thread work. Most rods are either painted, clear coated or left unfinished but you can add a finish to your blanks if you want by using Lumiseal or Permagloss. Do a search for those two products and you'll find several ways to apply them to you

Bobby, I'm sure there are many blanks by many different manufacturers that are comparable to the action of the Dobyns. It's just a matter of putting the completed rod on a testing board and comparing it with different blanks by adding weight to the tips so that you can compare the actual bend between the two. Here's a link to the testing board.

Alcohol from Wal-Mart for clean up. Buy it in the Pharmacy section by the quart. Take my word for it and a few others here with Many years of rodbuilding experience that you'll never run into a situation where you'll need the harsh and dangerous chemicals that was recommended a few posts up.

I cringe when I hear someone say "pole" or "fishing pole". It reminds me of Andy Griffith and Opie walking down that gravel road with "poles" in hand.

I do the same as Matt. It's so quick and easy even my five year old Grandson can clean a grip for me in under six seconds.

After putting on 6 coats and maybe even some more before it's all over with, I'd cut it all off and start fresh. Rewrap, level your rod then put on at least two thin coats of finish. That should be all you need to do.

No one mentioned to be more careful when applying epoxy. Take your time when applying your epoxy to the area near your grips and in the split area. Use something to steady your arm and get in a comfortable position. Get closer to your work area if need to. Get your self better or more lighting above the area where applying your finish. Take your time when applying your epoxy to the area

The SJ blanks are fast action. The CB blanks are moderate. The CB 854, as Jim stated would be your best bet for what you're looking for.
