I have a few fly rods under my belt now and have been checking with the common cents method. 2 of my 6wt a TFO and Rod Geeks came in at ERN 6.08 one older unknown that was sold as a 5 wt came in at 7.40 and two 8wt NFC and Rainshadow came in at 10.24 . Amazed how my 6wt seem to line up and the 8wt seem over rated. Just a little inconsistent. Now with these numbers dies it mean I can step up line

I was looking for an answer to a question I had asked in the past and seen that I've been asking asking questions for 19 years. Everyone has been a huge help all along the way for sure. Thanks Tom for being the the mastermind behind this forum.

Quick question, are the Alps and Pac Bay wrapping beds the same? Will the Alps live center work on either is really more the question I should be asking.

Roger, I'd like to thank you again. Wish I'd done this years ago. So smooth starts and stops. You went well above to help me on this.

I have a guy looking for a 7' MH fast blank for musky. He says 3/4 -2 oz max. Mostly live bait. He has some anger towards st croix, so a blank geeks is out. anyone have something that may be in this realm? I've seen a 7'6" blank from Tackle industries but I have no idea the quality. Thanks as always for the help. Mark.

New to me. A friend just asked me if I would be interested in building him a practice fly rod. I didn't know that was a thing until today. Has anyone here built one? Any build recommendations would be appreciated. I see they aren't very expensive and looks like my local bass pro has one so I plan on stopping in to check it out. ( great excuse to go shopping as well) thanks as always

I absolutely prefer locking wraps as well. Not that hard and for a little piece of mind as well.

I'm getting ready to build a 7'6" H&H S-glass 4wt I was thinking single foot wires but wondered if the double foot snake would slightly stiffen the blank. I'm trying to keep it as light as possible. Any thoughts.

I started using the small tube tiptops and the guys I've been building noodle rods for hate them. They say the extra weight from the tube affects the rod to the point of aggravation. They ask me to go back to using the regular single foot wires for the tips.

I have a client that wants a few 7'-7'6" heavy action bass rods. He has used Kistler H3 rods for years so I built him a couple NFC x ray 736mh and he loved them until he broke them. And as expected he blamed the rod, after fishing with them 10 hours a day 4 days a week since early March. He snapped 2 rods in almost the identical place less than 24 hours apart tells me something external pro

I've been building ice rods using minima guides and single fly guides and my guys requested me use a standard guide for the tip so I just wrap a single foot guide. It's a real treat wrapping noodle rods. Lol

Been a while since I've read a 6 page thread here. Very entertaining but at some point you just have to take Tylenol because of the headache caused by beating your head on the wall. I find it very odd that a person can get so triggered over a rod spine or spline. SMH thank you to all of you that handled the discussion with dignity. You guys are why I keep coming here.

I have a customer who would like me to build an 8' ML rod using Fuji KR concept and use recoils for runners. Which guide do I want to use the RSPGM spinning guides or the single foot fly? I think i know which one I should use but just putting a feeler out there to see if other have been doing this and what the end results have been. Thanks as always

I emailed Don and he confirmed. Said everything most likely will stay the same except probably no new blank development.

Tom, that's interesting news. When did this happen. Will they stay Rod Geeks or put their name back on them?

Well, I have had 2 NEO,'s waiting on builds and just started one for a good client. He purchased 4 xrays from me already. 3 MB 736 and SJ03. In less than a week he snapped 2 of the MB736 and now he is uncertain if he wants the NEO. I told him I'd give him the rod to finish off the season to test it out. I feel like a heal pushing the Xrays on him but they feel everything and are crisp. Just maybe

seems the ones that carry Gen 4 are not on the sponsor list. But Andy Dear is the one who is behind it and if you liked lamar products in the past you may want to at least try it. Andy knows his stuff.

just out of curiosity how are you guys testing a new rod before it goes out the door to your customers? I usually put a reel on and toss around some weight but I don't get real carried away. I just a client rod snap and I'm wondering if I missed something.

I have always used size 16 seats as a most all my rods are freshwater light to mag bass. I'm building some heavier 10 to 13 foot spinning float rods currently and I'm wondering if I should use size 17 seats. I really don't like the feel of them but I can see reel size of 4000 or so. I personally still like 3000-3500 series but you just never know.

Thanks , I am not a fan of Tennessee grips. I'll mock up what I have and see how it balances out I guess. I wasn't sure if there was a reason other than balance. I get the rear grip isn't doing much

I'm building my first centerpin rod and was wondering how to determine the length of the rear grip. I see a mixed bag of lengths when I look at others. I'm thinking a short grip for my current rod because it is on the short side for a centerpin rod at 10'6" I have a second one that will be longer at 13' and I am sure a longer rear grip wil suit that better Thanks as always

I agree with Pat. I've just built half dozen rods using these soft touch. My guys and myself included love em.

I use both manufacturers. I use NFC for my bass and walleye customers and Lamiglas for my trout and salmon guys. NFC has been treating me very good lately so I've been pushing them more. I have a few guys that have absolutely fallen in love with their Xray blanks.

Let packages sit for a day or 2 and practice good hygiene. That's how I'm handling it.

I have been intrigued by the use of fly rod seats I've seen on centerpin rods. Is there any reason why it would be a bad idea? I have a few friends I want to surprise and make some truly one off rods for them.
