A #9 tip is 3.6 mm, well actually 3.5719, industry standard rounds things to the tenth. Your gauge is metric and standard. Most suppliers list only the x/64th sizing, industry standard is to just list the numerator. In this case 9. If you dig into factory specs both the x/64th sizing and the the mm sizing is listed. When you order a blank most suppliers will size a tip to your blank if you a

I use drywall tape for build up when needed usually for reel seats. What I have done is do some narrow bands of masking tape that fit the reelseat or grip tight. I place the masking tape at the ends drywall tape in the middle.I then build up the drywall tape so there is a slight gap. I heavily coat the drywall tape with a paste type epoxy and install the grip or reelseat. The grip or reelseat wil

Got a project I am thinking over before I dive into it. Got a MHX ST 1081, well half of it. Broke the upper section in a couple spots. The blank is discontinued can't find one looking for awhile now. The blank was 9 foot light action mod fast. The butt section is fine and has some intricate handle work that I want to save which is the only reason I am thinking about this. Here is what I am thi

Paul: They do list the dragonfly series as blanks on their website. But they say the 9 footer cannot be shipped.

Thanks for the input. There are a couple models on my think about list. For those that have built on these blanks how to true to listed action would you say they are? Seems most UL blanks run way softer than specs. Or they match the action but run heavy on the power side.

About a month or so ago I purchased a Rainshadow blank from a online retailer. Wrong blank arrived in correct packaging. Bit of runaround getting it exchanged. Took a couple weeks but finally got the correct blank. Unfortunately the blank was not aware that it was supposed to be straight. I reached out to batson as the retailer did not have a a bank in stock. No problem they will take care of me.

I have read some of the breakage is attributed to blanks being very thin walled. What's your opinions on the wall thickness compared to similar powered blanks. Norman what are some of the models you have used? Biggest concern is the action. A lot of UL blanks tend to run slower than the action rating. Ideally I am looking for a true mod fast in the 7 to 7.5 foot range. Typically I would be

Spencer I know how their website works. You click on the plus or the model number of this particular blank the next info that opens does not contain a tip or butt size. Kinda important info. Last blank I ordered from them was supposed to be available it 4 to 6 weeks. I cancelled the order after 16 weeks and not hearing a thing from them. I then had to file a paypal dispute to get their attention

Wondering if anyone knows if North Fork is running full speed or possible still dealing with virus mandates and partial shutdowns or perhaps they are trying to catch up. Anyways need some complete specs on a blank and if it is in stock. Cannot get in touch with them. No luck on the phone but not a lot of chances to call. Email going on four days now without a response. Blank I am looking at i

Any input on these blanks specifically their ultralight offerings in the elixir series. Have some interesting offerings. Cannot find much good or bad about their blanks or them as a company. Just stumbled across them looking for something else. Honestly never heard of them before.

I extended the grip on one rod. So not a lot of experience but I think it worked well. In my case I cut off the the butt cap. I then took a section of threaded tubing. I used about a inch and a half. I epoxied this in the blank. I then took a section of grip and fitted it and epoxied it on a piece of threaded rod about an inch and a half longer than the grip section. The rod was horribly out of b

I got the feeling they have become more specialized. I understand that. With the other companies offering a lot of what lamiglas used to offer at a better price point you got to compete somehow. Makes sense to offer what others don't instead of trying to compete directly. Too many people just compare prices not features or quality. I too lean towards rainshadow for most builds. I want to like

In my search for a UL blank I came across a Lamiglas Infinity model AFW84ULF2. Seems like a very lightweight blank and probable a true ultralight by the specs. Anyways anyone have any thoughts on this blank or current lamiglas blanks in general. They don't seem to be as popular or as widely available as they used to be. Years back they seemed to be a much larger player in the rod blank business.

Just cannot win it seems. Ordered a rainshadow blank. Got the wrong blank in the right package. Sent it back. got the correct blank. SOB is this crooked. Has two changes of direction the upper about two feet. If I roll it on a table blank goes from touching at the tip to nearly 3/8s of an inch off the table. When the tip touches about a foot down I got a section about a foot long that is nearly

Silicone caulk will work. Not very strong but easy to peel off in the future. Probable the best option is hot glue gun. Will bond plenty strong for non load bearing connection. They make some heavier duty glue sticks if you think you need it but the standard work just fine. Cleanup in the future if need be is easy. Just warmup a putty knife with a torch slightly and the glue will peel right off.

Just want to update. Utmost took care of me. They did not stock the tops but were able and most importantly willing to get them from PacBay. Nice to get some real customer service instead of "sorry we don't stock them".

Ok driving myself nuts here. Cannot pull something out of my brain. In another thread was discussing Crystal Coat by Clemens. For whatever reason my mind got to thinking Clemens offered another house brand finish. Driving me crazy that I cannot recall what it was called and if was their finish or just something they repackaged. Of no real importance just one of those things that pops in your head

Another vote for Fly Fishing Extras. High quality will make custom sizes if their stock sizes won't work for you. For tubes I really prefer a 2 1/2 inch for spinning rods. Tough to find PVC and fitting in that size though. Mountain Cork offers a 2 1/2 inch tube in various lengths. It is nylon lined with a tough cordura outer sleeve and a zippered end cap. Got a couple pack rods stashed in the tru

I must say I don't recall the instructions. But I never had any issues with crystal coat. I would use plastic syringes mix in a plastic cup and pour onto a foil try to let the bubbles escape.I am not doubting that Crystal coat contained a solvent but it certainly did not seem to be very strong one. Instead of rehashing it as we all will remember things differently, the product is no more. Se

I think my technique is just not meshing with the new products. My steps are all the same leading up to the epoxy. I did use Clemens crystal Coat. I have heard it is klass kote. However it my research the properties don't sound the same. Klass Kote contains a solvent. Have read reports of it melting plastic and fumes, which would make sense if it contains a solvent. Never encountered fumes or mel

Just building for myself. Probable why I am so picky and searching for perfection. I do use CP as I don't care for the look of epoxy soaked threads. I did build for many years before taking a near 20 year break. I am sure my technique needs some work. I also cannot get the finishes I used to use that worked well for me.

Billy I have had ok results but always looking for something better. Biggest issue I have had is leveling. Threadmaster light ends up nice with multiple coats. But I end up with a high build type finish. I am building mostly ul light to med freshwater spinning rods. Looking for a light well leveling finish. The CTS finish from what I have read is supposed to be thin and level very well. Both the

I have been doing some research on finishes. Have not been happy with anything I have tried since getting back into building. Have gotten acceptable results but nothing really good. Looks like the CTS is worth a try. Who currently is the best source for it in the US. Thanks.

If you don't want a trigger style seat you can use a spinning seat. There is no difference in the reel that will make any difference. They are called a spinning seat because of the style and how they are typically used, not what they will fit. I paused typing just now. I took a Abu Garcia 6500 C3 casting reel which has a rather large foot compared to some casting reels. It fit right into a Pac Ba

Thought about keeping the blank. But just don't like it all. Seems to be very off of the specs. Cannot think of any application I could use it for that I don't already have a much better rod for. Will call Janns Monday. Fishing got me sidetracked today. And it was just that no catching. Luck needs to change here soon.

I have had more than my fair share of troubles with rods lately both built ones and in process. Latest was a broken older build that was one of my favorites. After a lot of research decided on a replacement blank from Rainshadow. Ordered it from Janns as they had it stock at a very good price. Get it today. Look it over seems a bit short for a 7 foot 3 blank. Get out the tape measure yup 7 inche

My experience with any epoxy is it is fairly stable given proper and stable storage conditions and changes tend to be gradual. If it is exposed to extremes all kinds of odd things can happen. You say you bought this batch about four months ago. Would of put your shipping time right in the middle of winter. Even if your in a warm climate where did it ship through and how long did it sit somewhere

Ben, the majority of the problems I had were exactly like you describe. Everything would look great then once cured I would have a football in the middle of the wrap. I have had to go super thin multiple coats to get a level but in the end thicker coat than I want.

You don't say what you are using for material. For my butt I like rubberized cork or eva. Either the whole thing or at least the face of it. I would glue up cork rings with a rubberized ring at the rear or all rubberized cork rings. Now for the arbor no need to make something special each time. Just use a section of threaded rod that fits the grip tight. A washer and a nut on each end. Clamp the
