How about Mark Blaubaum and perhaps Terry Henson? Not to mention the couple in Alaska( sorry, can't remember their names) that do the great handles and scrimshaw work?

Try contacting Billy Vivona as he was instrumental in their design. I am sure he could tell you if thats the blank you want to use. Keep in mind, that open water Butterfly jig fishing is one of the foremost uses these were designed for. As I understand it anyway. If the first rod you mentioned is for AJ's and Grouper I wouldn't make that my first choice. If I am fishing rock and reef dwellers, I w

Perfection aluminum seats can be ordered thru some distributors with various color combinations. Perhaps you could get them with light gold(near yellow) hoods and a green body. Try talking to plating shops near you that do specialty work in anodizing. You may need to check with tire or auto suppliers. I have seen some rims that weren't standard colors. I would suggest you paint a Fuji HD seat so

There are many reasons we make and use "tools" or gadgets. We find we need one or it makes things easier.
As far as the KISS thing goes....one could take an old spinning reel stem and drill a series of holes along the centerline of it,and then run some easily visible string, cord, etc., from the most appropriate hole thru the guides and tip,tie it off on something stationary and adjust

Back in those days, the most commonly used blanks for this back in San Diego were Sabres,Fenwicks, and even Kennedy Fishers.None of which are available now obviously. The Sabre 196-7 was more often than not the most popular amongst Bill and his friends. You have so many more options available now, however. The advances in graphite blanks has been tremendous so don't overlook them. If you want to stic

Mike,
No worries. If you were to look, you would find some mistakes longtime rodbuilders have had in humorous posts. After all.mistakes are how many of us learn best. Myself included. Its fun and rewarding crafting rods,so for now, keep That in mind and try not to "over-think" your first rod.
Welcome aboard!

Mike,
When you say cheap,do you mean cost effective for a first build? Lamiglas doesn't make cheap or inferior blanks/rods. I would say that is a good choice.
Do I have to put epoxy under it be for I shink it into place? No,however some double side carpet tape wouldn't hurt. The length will shrink some as well as the outside diameter. Thats no surprise. So cut it a bit longer than the finis

Berkely does not now and never has sold blanks. Why not support a sponsor like Batson or one of the many others listed to the left?

311. Re: Birch bark
Brass tubing, available at hobby shops or elsewhere, can do it. It can be cut into short lengths and one end then beveled by chucking it into a lathe, spinning it and filing that end. I would advise however, that before you use a hammer to tap into and cut the bark sheets, you add a wooden dowel plug to strengthen it against collapsing/deforming. You can also add a small tapping block between it and y

Great looking handle Raymond. Where did you get the blank? Are there more?

Raymond,
Do you know where to get one of those? ;o) Those are great blanks and can be trimmed from the tip and/or butt to get what he is looking for as far as action. Good for up to #15 line or maybe just to #12. That blank would be sweet for throwing live shrimp and a float or jigs n cranks. Super nice for flylining small dines or chovies too! How is the Apogee build coming along?

Sounds like an old Garcia_conolon rod.
Those guides were rather exotic in the day... imported I believe and perhaps proprietary to the Garcia rods. There is an @#$%& site seller or two that lists them from time to time. Why not go old school and replace them with carbide guides? Just a thought...

Grant...those are the beasts.
Any chance you have a pic to post of one? I couldn't find any on the net. Not much demand for them anymore I guess. Anyway, I wanted to post a pic to show what they look like and give another easy option over hardwood blocks.

317. Re: venders needed
For what its worth...in California, there is an item called a railplate used while deepwater rockfishing. It is simply a flat plate that fastens to a cord wrapped section in front of a foregrip. It is also bent at a 90 degree angle to hold against the inside part of the rail. I have fashioned my own from sheet aluminum and used a clamp kit from a Penn reel for attachment to the rod. I will try to

Many of those older saltwater True Tempers were solid fiberglass with detachable wooden butts. That will give you another direction to go. Very durable blanks!

Any good st. steel tip would work. Why not go with a carbaloy tip? As to what make of guides were originally there, I would say Mildrum or perhaps Allans.

Kerry,
Things like you mentioned DO happen. Just as things like New Old Stock blanks surface. As the blanks age, the tags and any "warranty cards" do disappear. I still have a stash of old Sabre blanks from California Tackle, Fenwick, and others I have yet to build. Does it make them worthless because I don't have a warranty card or poly bag with a header card? No. Many did not come

I managed by using a socket from a tool set of the appropriate size, epoxied into a PVC cap as well as the shaft. Square key stock will work just as well. If not better. :o)

A problem can occur when a registered and paid for, domain name isn't renewed. At that point, anybody can hijack it by buying the domain name. Someone elses hard work then goes to waste, unless the domain name is bought back. Typically at an outrageous price. Most can't come up with the money,so it remains "under new ownership." And because the originators can't access the site,it can't

327. Re: surf rod
It sounds like one section was broken and the existing tip was a fix to the shortened length. Perhaps the ferrule was the answer to the break. How does the length of the tip and butt section match up? Equal, or a longer tip section? These answers could help clarify things as well as the blank manufacturers name.

What people everywhere fail to realize lightning often strikes up to 12 miles distant from the point of origin. The storms leading edge does NOT have to be on top of you. Its this lack of knowledge that hurts and kills many hikers here in the Rockies climbing the 14'ers. I am happy that Gabe and his son lived to tell the story. As noted, many don't. Better safe than sorry. I learned of this afte
