I was thinking of marbling a cork handle for a rod for my nephew. Looking to paint it orange with some black and white as the marbling pigments. Attempt to make it camo like. The handle is a pistol grip which i will probably mount on a test blank to paint it up. Any pointers in marbling a cork pistol grip?

Ah ha..ok..makes sense. This is actually the first rod I have ever seen like this. All my store bought rods all have a sheen to them. Would love to get a Loomis blank, bit heavy on the wallet though.

I like the look of it, just wasnt sure if it was a common practice to finish the rod. Ill leave it the way it is.

So I have a couple MHX crappie rods that are slate and dont have finish on them like the CRB one I have. Would it be a smart idea to apply finish to the rod? I like the look of the slate as it is, just wasnt sure if it was normal to apply finish to a rod like this.

i guess at this rate, Ill just wait. It doesnt make sense to mess something up because of timing issues. No real reason to complete it in a certain time frame. Thanks for the suggestions. I can always go get an alternative and test it on a crap blank I have.

I havent actually sold any yet. I told one friend that I was thinking about it, and he said you gotta hook me up. Intent is for a hobby but if I make some money, thats cool too.

I have a couple small packets of pro-kote left but its not enough to finish the rods I currently have. I see that Walmart has Varathane Spar Urethane. Would this be a possible alternative?

I attempted to use Gorilla Glue epoxy and saw that it was pretty horrible for rod finish. I am looking for a slow cure epoxy that I can get at my local store because I dont have the time to order more Pro-Kote. What would be the best choice for epoxy that could be found at Home Depot or Walmart?

Thanks Chris. I was searching before and saw PealEx. They did seem to be exactly what I was looking for. When I have the time, Ill go down to the craft store to check it out.

Thats the part that worries me, the rod finish. If I put tape on the male end before applying finish, should that do that job? I would then remove the tape once im done the finish. I guess I just have to pay attention to what im doing in terms of the rod finish.

My first rod was a 1 piece so I didnt have to worry about dealing with wrapping the ferrel of a 2 piece rod. I just recently purchased a 2 piece trout rod, so know i have to figure out how to wrap the ferrel. I saw that there are extenders available but Im sure someone here has done something different. I was thinking of just getting a wooden dowel but I need a way to connect it to the rod dry

Ok, so I checked out the Testors options and it seems like there is Acrylic or Enamel. Does it matter which if Im taking off the thinner to get to the pigments? Ill have to check out dragon scale. The idea seems like it would work.

I know I prefer to fish with a one piece rod myself. However, travelling with a 7' rod in the car isnt very ideal either. For my saltwater fishing, I fish exclusively with 1 piece rods just because I get a better feel with them IMO. The freshwater ones I dont mind so much as Im just catching bass and sunnies. Other people probably have different opinions.

I didnt think to use model paint. Ill have to check that out. Ill have to get some wooden dowels to practice on first, dont want to start painting on a rod blank and completely mess it up. Im not so worried about performance for my own rods. If I do get to a point where I am making rods for others, then Ill pay attention to the performance of the rod.

I am looking to create a couple trout rods but unsure of what a decent rod blank would be for a newbie? I see that MHX has a couple that appear to be decent. I would like to keep them less than $30 per blank if possible.

I just finished my first rod this past weekend. I must say the learning curve is quite a bit steeper than I thought. The grips and reel seat were easy enough but the wraps were a whole other story. I did enough wrapping and re-wrapping to have completed at least 3 rods. I believe I found out that I put on too much epoxy or it wasnt leveled during drying. I have footballs on pretty much every
