Thanks for the all the suggestions. I probably will go with using an old scrap blank I have and create an oversleeve ferrule. This would allow me to accomplish the task without having to purchase other stuff. I dont have any solid fiberglass to create a spigot ferrule. Like I said previously, I dont have the blanks yet so Im not sure how its gonna go as of yet. I will definitely reinforce th

I figured that using the metal ferrules would be the easiest. I havent done much investigation on it yet, nor do I have the blanks yet. I have several production rods that have the little rubber tip on the bottom section for the 2 piece. Any ideas where I can something like that to use? I do have some extra butt caps that I might be able to use if the size is right.

I ordered several of the 'grab bag' blanks that Mudhole offered last week. I was thinking of changing 1 or 2 of them to a 2 piece rod. I figured that the cheaper blank would be a good test to work with. Is it best to use ferrules or to sand down the blanks and not use ferrules? Is there a preferred approach or a 'stay away from' approach?

I was curious if anyone knows of any shops in Pennsylvania that have supplies on hand. I know of one that is around Philly but I believe they don't sell to individuals. The closest one is in NJ but is over 2 hours away.

Looking to do a new build on a MHX PTSW78MH. I don't have the blank yet, so I was looking at dimensions to purchase winding checks. It doesnt appear that MHX has these rod blanks as part of their dimension list. Link from the MHX website (notice 2015) Anyone know of a more recent reference list?

I'm heading down to Williamsburg VA for a week beginning next week. I was curious if there are any rod building supply shops down that way.

I havent had any issues using the mesh tape. You just have to take your time using a hand wrapper. I tape off the section I want the wrap to be. I then spiral the mesh tape in the section making sure that the mesh tape overlaps the tape that marks off the section. I then tape the ends of the mesh tape so it wont come off. Wrap the section, packing as I go. I then put some CP on the ends bef

I have definitely changed my approach since I have built my first rod. Honestly, the first rod looks pretty crappy compared to my latest rod. They both did perform well which is the important part.

I finally got out this weekend to test out the first 2 trout rods that I made. Oddly enough, I didnt go trout fishing with them. I took my son to a local pond to test them out. Of course he outfished me by catching 4 pickeral in just under an hour while I caught a bass and perch. Very cool catching on a rod that I built with my own hands!

I agree with Matt on this one. There is a definite art AND science to rod building. When choosing the correct components for your build, you are working with the science of rod building. Once you get all the components chosen and in place then the art takes over. To play devils advocate, the art still has a science to it. If you dont measure your projected wraps (like I have done), then you

I would agree with Mudhole not having the shipping issue. It is definitely UPS that hinders the shipping. I live in a rural area where UPS sometimes delivers to my door. In 99% of my shipments, it is the sure post crap where they drop it off at the USPS. This is an additional 2 days for no good reason!! I would get expedited shipping, but I dont see the point in doubling my $ spent just to g

I just had an inquiry regarding a noodle rod. A friend is looking for a 10' noodle rod to be used for salmon. I would assume that any fly rod blank would work well for a noodle rod. Are there any that I should look at, or avoid? Not sure of the price point at this time.

Has anyone ever used mono as a pull thread? I am sick of trying to find a piece of thread laying around on the workbench. It can be quite frustrating when looking for a thread when you are so close to finishing a wrap.

I have recently switched to scissors myself instead of a single sided razor blade. I found that I had too many 'oops' where the blade touched the part of the thread I didnt want it to, resulting in the wrap coming off. I was looking at the scissors that mudhole offers that appear to be 2 blades that get squeezed together. I may purchase them but not sure at this time.

How did i miss those? I was all over the mudhole site. From the looks of it, I think the PTSW84MH-MHX model would fit the bill. Thanks.

Is the UV finishing product really worth that much? I know Im new to rod building but why would someone need a UV finishing system? If it is all about speed, I can see a production company wanting one, not so sure about a custom rod builder. Maybe some pros could chime in on why they would want one.

In my newbie experience, watching the rod for awhile helps quite a bit. I use a medium viscosity finish and I tend to put thin coats on. At one point I will stop the dryer and let the finish settle a bit then remove excess. Once that is done, put the dryer back on. I havent stopped it more than once as it seems that doing that removes any extra that I may have put on. My footballs have dimini

I have one of the Jarvis Walker Royale Gold rods that I use for striped bass. I would like to replicate this rod by creating my own with some improvements. The blanks are described as 'The blanks are tubular in the butt section and form into a solid fibreglass tip' I believe the mhx s-glass series might be a good fit, but Im not sure Anyone know of a similar blank to the one used

The use of a straw versus a toothpick shouldnt matter. You just have to make sure that you dont let the thread spiral off the rod blank as you are passing the tag end under the loops. If a loop spirals off, best bet is to start over. I have had several issues when a loop comes off. Just be patient with it as it takes a litle practice.

I have the unfinished foam core. It took several coats and some prepping of the surface but it did come out pretty good. The depth of the finish because of the multiple coats is pretty cool looking with the different swirls on the different levels
