Carlos,
Many members on this site were of an immense assistance to me concerning rod finishing. I combined all their input and a came up with a system that even picky me is very satisfied with. There is no need to spin the blank as the PG sets up extremely fast. It sets up so fast that one CONSISTANTLY QUICK pass up the blank from the tip and back down again, no more than 20 seconds total, is al

Gib,
Nicely stated! While there are others within this site who are also very knowledgeable and willing to share (such as the previous poster), we all need to tip our hats to Tom Kirkman. Yes, he is obviously knowledgeable and willing to share, but additionally lives and breathes rod building beyond this website or the magazine which is why both are the best anyone could ever expect.

2523. Re: Fit and Finish help
Gib,
I commend you on affording and assisting your son with a building project. He is a lucky kid! At the risk of sounding uninterested or protective of my (minimal) secretes, in racing, it is called “seat time”. You appear to be rather intelligent and the questions you have will self destruct once getting in there and just doing it. I am referred to as the Over-Thinker on this site and you may

2524. Re: Winding Check sizing
Through my limited wrapping experience, I have also found winding checks are never the proper size, either ID or OD. Hence, I make my own with appropriate combinations of ProPaste, ProGlue, or thread epoxy, with or without micro spheres and tint with coloring agents. The color exactly matches the wraps, it inherently produces a water-tight seal, and gives a really nice “swooped”, radiused edge. T

X2 what Michael suggested. Additionally, if the trim “nubs” are a different color than the base wrap, purchase a multi-colored assortment of fine-tip Sharpies. While the Sharpie color will bleed, if you do not get carried away with the touch-up, they will hide a multitude of sins.

X2 what Norman said. X10 that your son is interested in a constructive hobby (business?) and Dad is supportive. Allow me to add to Norman’s reply that the newer KR Concept is deeply based on the original NGC, but with even smaller (micro) guides. My old eyes and fingers have difficulty the micro guides which should be of little concern to Jr.

2527. Re: rod wrapper plans
Avoid tensioners which squeeze the thread in favor of squeezing the spool. You do not want to entice more thread fuzzies than will already be encountered.

I would have guessed “Sliding guides” were right up there with “Left-handed smoke shifters”. Amazing what one can learn from this site!

While my digits are a bit numb from years of abuse and the brain may be a bit also from age, anything that insulates a blank (sleeves and the underlying) from actually touching it will diminish the vibrations (feel) from the blank. We may be splitting-hairs here but, after 4 hours or more, it only takes 1/1000 of a second to will the Indy 500.

David,
I have been looking for thin-walled PVC tubing, 2 to 2.5in diameter rather than regular schedule 40 which is about 0.125 thick and more weight than needed. The fence post idea is good if between 0.060 and 0.093 wall and has appropriate fittings. For whatever reason, this is one of the rare times McMaster-Carr did not have what I need.

2534. Re: Micro Guides
As usual, if not expected and accepted, Roger and Norman are correct. But personally still like building fresh water rods with #6 runners and #8 for and for salt, even though a FG knot would probably pass through a #3! The FG is really a miracle knot. But the customer is always right and if they want #4s, then so be it.

Jon,
I have been building rods for less than one year and have learned to count on the three responders above, Roger, Michael and Norman to give me guidance. They are wrapping veterans with a wealth of knowledge and always willing to share. I particularly like Norman’s suggestions, especially concerning Fuji KR Concept guides and the FG knot, both of which I employ 98% of the time.
But I have c

Not surprising, yet still disappointing, the Tex value is consistently inconsistent as with so many other aspects in the real world.

Marlon,
Experience will dictate your favorite thread. I (recently) started wrapping and with ProWrap and have found no issues so that is what I buy and use. I was excited to find, purchase and use a spool of Gutebrod in the color needed for a vintage repair but was very dissatisfied with the splotchy, lumpy effect left on the rod. I use size A for underwraps only and D for everything else, be i

I am impressed! Not only do they look very good but should function exceptionally well. Careful though, those on this site may become confused with who the “Over Thinker” is between you and me. Being a tad jealous, can I rip-off your design? Nice Job!

If you like the cloth look and want the ultimate in durability make your own utilizing bi-axial, woven Aramid (Kevlar) sleeves,,, as long as you like yellow. When using any woven fabric sleeve for a grip, I strongly suggest keeping the finish to a minimum to allow the weave texture to be felt, then fish it. Additional coats of finish can easily be added but impossible to remove. Other than aesthe

Larry,
While you are fortunate to have fishing kids to build rods for, they are equally as fortunate to have an active father to build them one. They will cherish them forever and hopefully spark incentive to fabricate their own, but nothing will ever be as cool to them as the one Dad built!

2547. Re: Prowrap
While admittedly new to wrapping, I have yet to discover a knot within a spool. If that occasion arrives, I will be extremely upset and, as Roger stated, demand a minimum of two replacements!!! But, then, is a knot within a free replacement spool any less aggravating?

Norman,
When most of us veterans were sub 20, there were no cell phones or video games “vying for our attention”. We all ran around, exercising by playing ball-and-stick games which is much more physically healthy, and built models and other cool stuff rather than the present computer type activities vying for kids attention. As I stated earlier, Technology advancement is of great importance, bu

Thanks to all (you old fa*ts) responding. Your replies seem to mimic Tom’s information. Speaking of Tom, his mention of there being ”… so many other activities vying for kids attention” is precisely why I would like to see all of us exposing kids to fabrication of some sort rather than a stink’n cell phone or video game. If I sound like an old fa*t, it is simply because I am.
