David, “Smoothie” or Tom Harder’s “System 20 Fisheye Eliminator” as posted on Tom’s topic a few weeks ago. At 1/8in, that’s a crater rather than fish eye. The contamination has permeated the epoxy and will unlikely be removed by acetone, DNA, sanding or scuffing with a Scothbrite. Subsequent coats of epoxy will produce the same results without one of the additives. Any additional coats will also

Ken, There should be no need to sand nor any benefit; quite the contrary as it is extremely difficult to remove every speck of sanding residue and if you sand into the threads you will have a really ugly mess! Attempting to achieve an absolutely, perfectly level surface over the entire butt wrap is difficult, even for the veterans. I am very picky (to say the least) and my longer wrap finishes a

Thank you very much to all replying and attempting to help. It appears the general consensus is that the smallest tip top with an insert is a 4mm. So what do/did builders use for a tip top, go up 2 sizes to a 4mm? That seems to be somewhat defeating the purpose of using such tiny guides. Additionally, a TT that much larger than the guides would stand-out like a red-headed step-child. I see that P

Denis, Thank you for attempting to help! I have never work with these really tiny micro guides; hence I am unfamiliar with ring size verses actual ID in inches. I do utilize Fuji’s #5 Alconite guides and tip tops with their actual ~.110in ID but that is considerably larger than the present guides of .058in. What the heck ring size should I be looking for to correlate to an actual ID of .060in?

Dennis, There ya’ go asking all these technical questions lol! I should have included the tube size of 5.0. Thanks, whatchagot?

I was given (thank you, Norman) some ultra-micro, single-foot guides WITH INSERTS a few years ago. Since I rarely use smaller than #5s, these have just sat in a box. Now, I have found a use but cannot find an appropriate tip top WITH INSERT. I would prefer black to match the guides, braces attached to the tube on the ring side, and a ceramic ring ID of ~.058in. Again, that would be preferred but

10X on Phil and Roger’s comments (and the others for that matter). Within rodbuilding, mineral spirits (and the like) are only a half-step better than silicone! As for Xylene; it is really nasty poo poo and I avoid it if at all possible.
Forum: rodboard

Mark Talmo
Ken, DON’T DO IT! You should already have a clean surface (CP over thread) which is ready for epoxy. Mineral spirits is more oily than acetone or DNA and even those two should not be wiped on a blank, let alone thread, prior to epoxy without scuffing first. I am certain Tom and Roger will reply.

Albert, That is a pronounced distortion! And I thought some of my vintage FG Conolons were tweaked! You have received three previous replies from reputable builders unanimously agreeing to use it, build it, and fish it. All three might also agree on building on the straightest axis, and I would concur.

Mark, Bob is correct in that guide spacing will most probably be different with the KR Concept, but then the original guides may not have been placed properly in the first place; static load testing for guide placement will reveal that. I can appreciate you may just want to mount the new guides in the same locations to cover-up where the original guides were.

Mark, I agree with all replies you have received thus far. Roger and Bob with a LV25 stripper with a 2500 reel if you want to go that route. However, I strongly suggest you consider Norman’s point of using the KR Concept, most likely a KL-16H stripper, 8H, 5.5M reduction down to whatever size KB and KT runners you prefer (use Jim’s GPS software). While the KR Concept was designed for braid, limp

Phil, I suspect a little of all you mentioned are factors, with “ease of production (cost)” at the top of the list. It is safe to say the Tip-Over-Butt ferrule is here to stay, and with good reason; it has been used and accepted since the early 1970s, affords a clean appearance, adequately strong and is easier, quicker and less expensive to produce. When in need of purchasing a multi-piece blank

Fred, You will find varying opinions on whether an underwrap or a double overwrap is necessary or not; none are wrong and it boils-down to personal preference after examining the pros and cons. There are those who underwrap to help cushion or isolate the guide foot from nicking the blank and/or to help stabilize the feet. Others simply like the look or their customers expect the look. An underwr

Good question, David and good reply, Tom. That makes me wonder if NCP rod wrapping thread has a lubricant applied or if it is exempt due to obvious reasons? I basically use NCP to avoid the need for CP and have not noticed any issues.

I saw an ad for an Alps power head unit but cannot remember where I saw it. It includes the upgraded chuck with the motor mounted directly beneath and inside the aluminum frame (I do not think it came with a drying motor which I do not need anyway) and a foot petal. The price was about $260.00. I do not need the bed or uprights as this would be grafted to my own bed. I may also be interested in a

Roger, thank you for the compliment and contribution. I totally agree with you concerning DNA and epoxy; they really do not mix. I found it strange to learn so many rodbuilders use DNA rather than acetone, even when attempting to thin the epoxy. I just figured there must be something different with rodbuilding’s 1-to-1 epoxies than structural 4-to-1 epoxies. Your simple test would be a good demon

Tom Harder’s recent topic,”U-40 Dura Gloss Supreme” described the unfortunate evils of contamination while building a rod and the resultant nightmare. After some pondering, his ordeal has prompted me to offer all of you some lessons-learned through my observations and experience in the composite and auto body industries in hopes of minimizing, hopefully eliminating the possibility of such occurri

Great replies = thanks. Although numerous subjects were mentioned, it seems spin reels can handle very light baits/lures better than casting reels. I can attest to that; when the bait is much smaller than normal while calico fishing, I can hardly cast past the gunwale with a casting reel, even if I don’t bird-nest it!!!

Donald, Very well-put, understood and acknowledged. I am certain Phil Erickson, Herb H. and others would agree. Understand that it is difficult to teach an-old-dog-new-tricks. Does anyone make a fly rod or reel to combat 100lb + tuna (my turn to kid)? Actually and probably yes, but I’ll stick with my current conventional stuff.

Roger, Michael, Bill and Steve, Thank you for such prompt replies. The first three responses seem to parallel each other, my observations/opinions as well, most importantly the bird-nest factor. Steve’s observation of “control” is well-received although trout, especially brown and even more-so native golden, are notorious for being skittish and evasive as well. Steve obviously possesses a much m

Happy Labor Day to all! Why do spinning reels dominate trout fishing while casting reels dominate bass fishing? The fish are oblivious to what type of reel is employed. In almost 50 years of trout fishing the Sierra and Rockies, I have never seen a casting reel yet that is all I see when watching bass tournaments. Being a trout and not a bass angler, maybe my observations are blinded. Basically,

Tom H., All said and done, I and presumably everyone else are glad to hear you finally achieved the finish wanted. I do not consider the silicone additive to be a cure but rather a Band-Aid on the problem. But drastic times can demand drastic measures. Sometimes it is better to apply a Band-Aid rather than bleeding all over the place. Congratulations on your perseverance!

Tom H., Sorry, but I am unfamiliar with swishing some Madera thread in the epoxy. Assuming you are referring to Billy V., who could argue with his knowledge? If you go the additive route, you are correct that only a tiny, unmeasurable portion of a drop will be required, at least with the Smoothie (can’t speak for the other you mentioned). Have faith and, again, GOOD LUCK!!!

Whether the contamination is silicone or something else, pin holes or larger areas, Smoothie could possibly be the best “plan B” to ease the woes Tom H. is encountering. After all, that is the main concern here.
