I was thinking of the reel seat. About the same diameter as the pen he made. Only problem is its the wrong time of year to get corn cobs from the farms.

Just a thought. One of the things I do when using hard wood with cork, is to turn and finish the wood first, then do the glue up. Now all I need to do is and the cork down to the hard wood and I'm done.

I have seen several images of corn cob handles. I searched the forum and came up empty. So my question is how are these handles made. Are they epoxy empregnated like cork? I am from Nebraska and they would make perfect handles for a pair of rods I am thinking about building. Thanks. John

Robert, What exactly do you mean by "threads loosening up and unraveling". Does this happen after the wrap is finished or while you are wrapping?

Roger, Ok, what brand acrylic ink to you use. I have tried several and so far nothing seems to flow well. Just a blob or no flow. Maybe I'm not using them correctly? I will try my local hobby store tomorrow and talk to them. Computers I can do pretty well, some of this art stuff is a little confusing to me. Thanks. John

I have always been frustrated by signing a finished rod. I have tried the extra fine paint pens, speed ball pens, and about everything in between, but have yet to find a way to sign my rods so it looks half way decent. Speed ball present a problem getting them to even write on a blank. I sand the blank first, but then either I get a blob or nothing at all. The extra fine paint pens are two w

OK, One more question. When wrapping a tartan, what's the best way. A single thread at a time, or multiple threads?

All of the rods I have built in the last 30 or so years have been fly rods. But the other day I got a pretty good deal on two casting rod blanks. So I thought what the heck. Since I live in Nebraska I thought I would make a matched set, one spinning and one spin-casting rod. One wrapped with a Nebraska Black shirt weave and the other with the Nebraska N weave. Then I thought about putting N

Thanks, Found the thread base and have been doing some designing. My rods are about 1/4 inch OD where I am putting the wrap. So that only gives me a little over 3/4 of an inch circumference. That means, as you say a single diamond. I have experimented and it seems that what I need to do to make a tartan is lay down one pattern going up the rod, then duplicate the pattern going down the rod

John and Chris, Thank you great!! responses. I really appreciate the information. It will definitely play into my decision matrix. Most of the rods I build are fly rods for freshwater use so pretty small diameter (3/8" or less). So I guess that makes it a two axis diamond. I will also forget about Madeira for the wrap. I was afraid of that. Pro Wrap has a pretty good selection,

Mike, Ok. I haven't used Corel Draw since it was a DOS application. I use a color search program I got with my copy of @#$%&. I pull the image I want to use, find the thread that matches the colors and use those colors in my cad. When I'm done I just have to order any thread I need. Hence the reason I like Madeira. So many colors. I have also been considered testing Royal as well. I am

I have been using a free CAD program for designing for a while now. The program is QCAD and its free. I use Linux instead of Windows, but I think there is a Windows version as well. So what does this have to do with rod building. I use it to design my Cross Wrap patterns. It is a great way to check our the color combinations and thread sequence. Just thought it might be something you al

Ok, I have read Clemens book, read almost all the threads here on how to's for Tartan wrap and two questions pop into mind. 1. Do most use a double diamond (0,90,180,270) or just a single (0, 180). 2. Seems to have been some discussions about using Madeira thread. What seems to be the consensus. Madeira good, bad or indifferent? I have used Madeira a lot over the past year because o

Just don't ask Johnny at Anglers Roost any questions. I did and he became extremely abusive. I have had several other people tell me they have had the same experience. I have found some really nice rods on an @#$%& site by a man named Roger. He has a nice little 3 wt that looks like a perfect rod for a child. I can give you the site if you email me. Have fun. John

I have seen several patterns for the American Flag wrap. All call for a blue/silver thread. My research shows that thread is no longer available. Has anyone found a substitute or a way to make the stars? I was thinking of knotting silver thread around blue, but am concerned about bulk. Thanks. John

Many thanks. I see many references to past issues of RodMaker. Two questions, one is there any way to get past issues, and if so is there a list of past issue contents? Two, how can I subscribe to RodBuilder? Thanks. John

I have seen a few photos of chevron wraps that appear to blend from one color to the other. I am curious if anyone has a method to accomplish this. My thought is to start with the new color and start wrapping one old, one new, one old two new, etc for about 4 or five wraps then start the new color all on its own. I haven't tried this approach, so before I do I wanted some advice from the exper

Has anyone tried this one step finish? I have seen it for a while and thought I'd give it a try. I have a Tenkara that has a simple chevron wrap and I want to try it out. So, if anyone has tried it can you pass on your experience? Thanks. John

Ok, Thanks everyone. I have tried it all the ways I have mentioned, and I too found wrapping uphill to work. I just wanted to see if everyone else used the same techniques. Nice to have a professional group to ping ideas and questions off. Again thanks.

Thanks everyone. So rod to guide seems to be the way to go. Ok, so do you rotate the rod in the same direction for both feet? I would think yes, but I could see eithere way. I can also see wrapping all the guides on one side first, reversing the rod in the lathe, and wrapping the other feet. Again, thanks everyone.

So I have been doing this for a while and never really thought about it until today. W\hen wrapping guides which way do you wrap the foot closes to the tip top. Do you wrap down the rod toward the tip top starting at the guide iteslf, or do you wrap up the rod starting at the tip top side of the guide foot and wrap toward the guide. What is the consensus as to the way to do it? Thanks.
