I'd go with the heat in combination with a tightened down reel seat. Maybe it's just me, but I can't see the scenario that Roger spelled out being in play at all. I've had rods and reels get tangled up in an over crowded rod locker before. But never anything like that. That would be an extreme occurrence. One thing I have noticed of late, at least with the newer Shimano bait cast reels, is tha

Earlier I mentioned I needed to replace my one pair of Oakley's that I wear for every day use as well as when fishing open water and bright sunny conditions. I was planning on going with a new pair simply because the glasses are older, and I didn't think I could find replacement lenses for them. Low and behold I found a couple of places that make lenses for the older Oakley Half Jacket frames. So

Aleks, your stance is more than understandable, and like Norman, I applaud you for laying it out in the way you did. BTW ..... I completely agree. It's a rod building site and needs to remain as such.

I definitely agree Mark. I sure wouldn't want to try pulling a fish vertically out of heavy cover with that long of a rod. Probably end up hurting myself. With that said, I have doodled bass out of heavy cover with my flipping and pitching rods a few times. It's definitely exciting. Doodling is also a deep water technique that I learned about at a Bass University seminar I attended years ago.

That's why you buy an inexpensive scale. Then it doesn't matter what you use for weight. I sill use pennies because I have a 2 lb coffee can full of them. I just don't have to count them. Pop them in a bag handing from a bent out paper clip ... deflect the rod the proper amount,..... unhook the paper clip from the rod tip and pop it on the scale. Can't get any easier than that.

I also have a Pac Bay power wrapper that I upgraded with the Alps chuck. It was the best investment I ever made as far as my wrapping equipment goes. It was as easy as easy can get. I didn't have to drill any extra holes and the holes in the Alps chuck lined up perfectly with the holes that were drilled for the cheap plastic Pac Bay chuck. As far as that plastic chuck goes, I understand wanti

I have two pairs of fishing sunglasses that I have had for years. Both pairs are Oakley. One has the brown tinted lenses that are made for low light conditions, the other with black lenses that are meant for bright sun light. As mentioned above, I have fished with friends that went the less expensive route, and they can't see some of the things that are under water, that I can see. Especially wit

You can call it whatever you want ..... it's using a long rod to dip a bait into cover. It's not species specific, it's technique specific

As Spencer pointed out, the carbon fiber grips are very tough on their own. and, based on about 3 years of experience on one of my rods in particular, show zero signs of wear. And they transmit vibrations wayyyyyyyyyyy better than cork, or EVA, and they aren't slippery at all.

lol Steven. I laughed when I first read it all those years ago. A year or so ago I was watching a Youtube video of an interview with Dee Thomas. While he didn't call it doodle socking, he talked about bass anglers cleaning up in tournaments using a crappie fisherman technique using long rods and dipping baits into holes in cover. Evidently other competitors were complaining because of people usin

Al, don't be too embarrassed about coming up with numbers different from your first attempts. I had the same thing happen to me when I first started doing CCS measurements. I had a couple of brain malfunctions with the simple math as well. It was then that I decided to forego the penny counting, and just buy a scale to measure the weight I used to deflect the blank. It definitely simplified the p

My guess is that the huge streamers are exacerbating the problem some what. I would imagine that they at least triple in weight when they get wet. Like I said, I am not a fly fisherman, but I am certain that other members that are, will reply and maybe have a way of getting past your predicament. From my bass fishing point of view, you need a more powerful rod lol Good luck !!!

I really can't believe I am saying this, but I am also not naive enough to believe that it doesn't take place, but species specific rods are more of a marketing ploy, than they are actually species specific. If anything, the long crappie rod mentioned above is a technique specific rod. I believe the technique is called "doodle socking"? Even technique specific rods aren't always tec

I'm not a fly fisherman, but IMO your logic is sound. If the weight you're throwing over powers the rod, you need to use a lighter weight, or a higher powered rod. In that respect it's no different than casting too heavy of a weight with a conventional casting or spinning rod. Where the difference comes in is that you' carrying line that has a lot to do with how far you're going to cast, so yo

And I'd hate to see this forum slide into a forum with posts that conjure thoughts of the Illuminati, government conspiracies and political opinions. If that's your thing, there are plenty of other sites for that kind of stuff. IMO if it is allowed here, the site will lose members. And not that it would be any great loss to this community, but I would be one of, if not the first to go. It

Jeff, it's not a grand conspiracy at all. If you've built a rod to fish for bass with, you've built a bass rod, and so on. As Tom pointed out, there are certain rods that are considered species specific rods. A drop shot rod would be a good example. A drop shot is a popular technique for fishing for bass, but I use my drop shot rods to fish for pan fish. They make excellent perch rods. Is a drop

Aaron, I think going to that short of a handle on that length of rod is going to significantly affect your fish fighting ability Moving the reel seat back 3 or 4 inches is going to give the fish quite a bit more leverage. Even on smaller fish, you're probably going to end up reaching ahead of the reel to grab the rod in order to increase your pulling power. Also, you seem to be thinking that

Aleks, thank you for replying. Very much appreciated. And yes ..... that is the view I was looking for, and the view that used to come up when you typed anyone's name into the search authors box in the search function. Thank you for the tip about clicking on a members name to see all their posts. I had no idea you could do that. I've always just used the search function. And I certainly belie

It has been my experience that the lightest rod is not always the easiest rod to detect a bite with. How a rod and reel balances can and does go a long way in detecting a bite. It's not just about the rod's ability to transmit vibrations ..... there is more to it than that.

thanks for the replies. I just want to describe what I am experiencing. First, I am talking about the search function for the site itself. Specifically the "Search Authors" option. I say this based on the weights of the bait's being talked about. Because the weights being talked about are so light, I tend to agree with Spencer when it talks about cast control with a spinning reel versus a casting reel. As I mentioned in my previous post. I have never tried to use a BFS casting reel. They cast light weights significantly better than the SLX MGL 70 that I used for the cas

Building on the straightest axis doesn't take the spine of the blank into consideration at all. And as Aaron pointed out, there is really no reason to find out where the spine of the blank is. It's not going to affect casting performance or fish landing performance. As others have said, the Fuji KR concept guide software for spinning rods is about as good and as easy as it gets when it comes t

The only components that you mention that I have any experience with are the Fuji titanium guides with SIC rings. Specifically their T2 black titanium framed guides. They are extremely light and absolutely gorgeous guides. Definitely a great choice for keeping weight to a minimum. Just want to share my opinion on your want to keep the build as light as possible. While I certainly understand wa

With all due respect, bait casting reels have come a long way in recent years when it comes to casting light weights. I'm not saying you could cast a bare 1/32 oz jig with one, but I am not saying you couldn't. I read this post yesterday and wanted to wait to comment until I tried something. Let me say that other than holding one in my hand, I have zero experience with a BFS casting reel. But
