For a thin shim dry wall tape works very well. With a thicker shim I usually tack the edge of dry wall type in place on the blank with a drop or two of super glue. This prevents the dry wall tape from moving due to wet epoxy when sliding the seat in place. I have had masking tape shims fail but never dry wall tape or polyurethane foam shims. I do not use masking tape for shims anymore, even thou

For a small gap like you have, a masking tape shim will be fine. I prefer dry wall tape, the mesh allows the epoxy to penetrate to the blank giving a solid bond between the blank and the reel seat. Could also use polyurethane foam bushings. I glue them into the reel seat first and when set ream to fit the blank and glue in place. It's your choice they all work well. Norm

I really like KR rods! Have not made a hybrid KR rod using Fuji KL-H reduction guides with Minima 4F runners. I do either all Minimas or all Fuji. No reason why the hybrid rod should not work well, sound very nice. Glad you like the hook keeper, it's the best I've used. Let us know how you like the Elliot blank. Norm

This has happened to me on a couple of occations. Basically the resin has crystallized, but that is not a problem, it is similar to rod finish epoxy resin crystallizing. If you heat the entire container it will soften up, but it may recrystallize again. The easiest thing to do is scoop out what you want to use heat with a hair dyer for a few seconds then mix it with the hardener, it will work jus

Mark - If you want an epoxy that set ups quicker than try Treadmaster. A drawback is that it has a shorter pot life, not a problem for me. Another option is to try the Billy Vivona mix, which is a mix of Treadmaster and ProKote at a ratio of 1:1:1:1 (TM A:TMB:PKA:PkB). This mix gives properties intermediate between TM and PK. Billy has experimented with all the different finishes and settled o

Standard shipping rate is the same whether you live in California or Mississippi, or New Jersey or Michigan. Some get their packages in a timely manner other do not. Not the Sellers fault. If you want faster delivery you might have to ask for expedited shipping and pay extra. I rarely buy less than $150 per order, so I get free shipping, which I assume is the lowest rate possible and I still get

Spencer is giving you the article that explains the two line method for static testing in detail. Basically you run the line from your reel through the guides and tie a small weight to it and just let this weight hang from the rod tip. You then tie another line to your tiptop and tie this line to a heavy weight on the floor. When you bend the rod due to the heavy weight tied to the tip top your g

Once the package is in the hands of the shipper, the seller has no control on how long it takes to get to the destination. Maybe you should be complaining about the shipper, rather than the seller. Just my thought on this. Norm

Jim is correct on the stripper placement, since the KR and match guide frames are higher for a given ring size then the stripper will be placed closer to the reel. This smaller ring begins the choking process. Also, the bigger the reel the further away a stripper guide of a given height will need to be placed. The line used also plays a role in stripper placement, and the heavier and stiffer the

PS - A less expensive alternative to the CFX grips would be to use the PacBay molded polyurethane foam grips. You will be covering up the carbon fiber with color so these may be an option, or as a practice substrate. Norm

Many will top coat these handles with epoxy finish to give them a gloss finish and this holds up pretty well. So an option would be to add marbling pigment to the epoxy and then coat the handle in any color you want. You can use the pigment from Testors enamel or use the marbling pigment from Mudhole. With 5 colors (red, blue yellow, black and white) you can make any color you want by mixing. Yo

Believe me I have built over 150 KR spin rods during the past few years using both Fuji KR guides and Minima M and F guides and they perform exceptionally well, and In my opinion better than any other 'concept' I have ever used. The Minima M guides of a given ring size are of very similar height to the Fuji KL-H guides, so they are a lighter suitable substitute for use in the KR concept. The KR

Use the KR GPS at Anglers Resource to get a good starting point for your layout. Since you are using the Minima match guides with the F guides you are doing a KR micro guide set up. The 27x system or the table edge method iare very good if you are doing a NGC setup but you are not, so use the KR concept! The KR concept is a rapid choke system so your stripper is going to be closer, some where ar

In a previous post John Cates of Flexcoat mentioned that many rod manufacturers using Flex Coat will thin the first coat with acetone to get quicker penetration of the threads. The proportions he mentioned was 15:1 of mixed epoxy to acetone, I.e. 15 ml of mixed epoxy to 1 ml of acetone. For a smaller amount, 6 ml of mixed epoxy would require approximately 8 drops of acetone. (25 drops is about

A dentist friend of mine gave a pair of fine point curved tip spring action scissors a number of years ago that I use for cutting thread. They work great. I think they are gum scissors but not sure. Might be able to get them at a medical supply store. They look very similar to some fine tip spring action fly tying scissors. Norm

Many of us use scissors instead of razor blades. We insert our tie off loops early and after inserting the cut wrapping thread into the loop we pull the loop tight to the edge of the wrap cut the tag end of the thread very close to the loop the pull the loop through the wrap. The tag end is now buried under the wrap with no nub sticking out. Fast and easy. Have not used razor blades in years. Don

If you can not find one in your area, I have a couple and could spare one, but live in MS. Could send it 2 day priority mail and you would get early next week. I can glue it to the hood if you wish so you would not need to worry about it breaking again. Just let me know. Norm

I would cut the broken guide off and replace with the new guide. If you have a fancy under wrap you do not want to redo, just carefully cut the threads on the guide foot to remove the over wrap. Clean it up, lightly scuff up the old finish and rewrap the new guide in place. With a new coat of finish will never know the guide was replaced. Removing a ceramic guide from a perfectly good guide and

No it not the right blank! It does not meet advertised specs. Send it back and make sure you get one that meets specs. The seller should do this for you at no cost to you. If not contact Batson. There is no reason why it should not met specs, it is either a mislabel or is defective. Norm

I have rods with cork, carbon fiber, and Winn grip handles and I use them so the people I am making a rod for can hold, look at, and fondle to decide the type of handle they want. Most choose the Winn grips, a smaller number carbon fiber and very few cork. All of the people I build for are avid fishermen with many fishing tournaments..They take their fishing seriously.and love the Winn grips. I
