121. Re: Surf rod
Like the other post stated, more info the better. From what you are telling us I believe you need a butt length of 20" plus butt cap. That type of rod I've made the butt section from 18"-22".
Guide sizes will be determined by the reel size and line to leader connections. Running guides I would use size 8 to 10 rings. A good choice are the Fuji K guides. Double foot with the alco

It's not an easy business. Don't ever sell yourself short. You can't lose sleep, money, or reputation on a build you don't agree to. The only customer I find is harder to deal with is the one that want a "super rod". They'll spend money but they want one rod to catch all fish with any reel and any weight lure. Like a surfbottomfly rod...lol

Works even better under tube style shop lights. Center your lathe under the lights.

I have to agree with Michael. Probably best to start over. You can put a shrink grip over the damaged grip and use on another rod.

It won't collapse. Don't put it in a rod holder and use for trolling. That will crush it.

X2 Chris. They sell arbors to fit reel seat and butt cap as well.

It can be used to coat metallic thread wraps before coating with epoxy. I think it makes the color pop. Make sure you only pour what you need and make sure the cap is screwed tight. Follow directions on bottle for best results. Great product.

Roger has some great ideas. I'm thinking in the future cut the foam Arbor into pieces and attach to blank leaving spaces between the pieces. It will look like a tape arbor. That will allow the reel seat to flex a bit and the spaces will allow the arbor to flex with blank.

Russell, I don't agree with your comment on drag ratings and destroying the gears. Plenty of large striped bass and even tuna have been landed on van staal reels. I haven't heard of any reels blowing out the gears. Correct me if I'm wrong but... if you locked down a staal drag you would break off before you damage it.

I love my bailess reels. I use them on my kayak, boat and surf casting. Never used the 6500 you are asking about but my van staals work great. The Penn staals Barry mentioned are pretty cool.

I agree with Norman. For bait casting 6-8oz lead use a 4000 or 5000 size reel. A popular reel for that application in my neck of the woods is the Penn 704z or 706. It's a bit heavy and has a very large spool but very tough and very easy to work on.

Dennis, I saw an ad for that reel. Have you held one yet? Curious if it's heavy in the hand. I hope to check one out soon.

I agree Tom the internal parts are important but if water is allowed to breach the body the internal parts are worthless. Weight is also important when you cast for hours with a long rod. I've used cheap reels and expensive reels. My expensive reels(VS) are years old and have been laid in sand and submerged and they work as good as the day I bought them. My favorite low cost surf reel is the Pen

Raise your price limit. I do a lot of surf fishing in the NE. You don't want a cheap reel that you will be replacing in short time. Surf fishing will test your equipment limits. In your price range check out Fin nor reels, Penn spinfisher V reels, also check out some used fishing gear sites. Happy new year!

I haven't ordered from them but your experience is a common thing. Lots of posts with the same problem. Could be he's swamped with holiday orders.

Lol...Michael you are correct. Tying flies and bucktails is definitely more addictive to me. It's awesome watching a customer catching a fish on your custom rod but even more awesome when it's on your rod and your fly or bucktail.

Perma gloss over metallic thread will make the color pop.

I agree with Eric on distance from reel. Depending on application 20-25" from reel face. The first 180 guide is determined by the type of spiral you are doing. It can be the third guide up to the fifth guide and maybe even further. Just make sure you reach that 180 guide with at least three running guides after at 180 before tip.

Look at item #. If it has a 3 it's a 3, 4 it's a 4. All Ti coated ones are 4. It is confusing on their website.

Pac Bay minima4 Ti coated guides. Light, durable, cheap. Use larger running guides if you need to pass knots.

Like Lynn said the orthodontic bands work great for the small diameter areas and latex tubes for the large diameter areas.

You can draw and paint a design on a carbon grip or use a decal design then coat with epoxy.

Ok. Well since I rarely fish Sweetwater, and when I do I use a fly rod, I don't have enough knowledge of the lures and techniques used to give you an accurate answer. I will say however that the revelation blanks are high quality with a great price point. Another option to throw in the mix are the am tackle bushido blanks. I use them a lot and have nothing but good things to say about them. Wish

They both catch fish. You will find many people like one or the other and some like both. Which one meets your line, lure, weight, length, etc requirements? Go with that one.
