Not a fan of the CRB tool. I bought one thinking it will be faster to align the guides...not so. They're made from thin plastic and the one I have has a bend in it that made it frustrating to use. I also don't like it because it's too short. It's the right height for casting guides and smaller spinning guides. The first rod I used it on was a 10' surf casting rod and that was the last rod I used

Always a good idea to test before applying to final product.

What's the spool size? I'll use a #25 with a 3500 reel #30 with a 4500 reel or larger. You might want to use #8 or #10 runners if you are passing knots. #8 work great for most simple kind to leader knots.

I live in NY but I bought my boat from Hudson Outboard in Salisbury, MA 3 yrs ago. He had a couple tuna rods in the shop and one was from the show. A local rod builder builds tuna rods for rec and commercial fishermen. You should call them and get the builders #. I can't remember his name.

Check out mud hole. I built a couple of their camo blanks for kids. They're durable and the kids love the look.

Most of my saltwater rods (bottom, fly, surf, spin) have minima 4 guides on them. I use fuji k guides for my heavy surf rods and amtak virtus on some heavy bottom rods but the minima guides work great.

I would assume butt end. Those blanks are able to hold heavy sinker weight. I don't see the need to cut the tip.

The one he describes is just like one used by one of the members. Can't remember his name but he named the wrap after his last name. I believe he spaces the guides normally with bands to mount. Then mounts the tip top in casting rod position. Run a line through the guides and apply pressure. When the line is pulled down the guides will rotate to the best position. Only the last one or two guides

I would follow Jays suggestion and tie the knot you will use and pass it through guides to see what is best. You can buy different sizes or use your own rods or a friend's rods to test.

Never used the shrink labels. I use the 1/2" silver on clear and 1/2" silver on black. It's a great product.

Are you using #16 because you are using a wind on leader? What test braid and leader are you using? You might be able to use #12 running guide.

X2 Russ. Take the advise of the builders that responded and build different rod. You never know, you might catch more fish than them. Maybe they will ask you to build them custom rods.

I had that problem years ago when I first started. I found that I didn't apply the epoxy far enough past the end of the wrap on both ends. All it takes is a pin hole size opening to expose the threads to moisture and the wraps become milky. As far as the cracking of the epoxy. I found that to be because of over exposure to sun and not wrapping the guides high enough on the feet (mainly surf rods

Robert, Which one of the sponsors on the left sell TL Johnson? That name was mentioned a couple times in the last month but haven't seen them in any of my catalogs.

All good blanks listed above. I build most of my spin rods for striper fishing and I use the bushido LS blanks and the rod geeks carbon 2 blanks. Bushido are my first choice. Good luck

It's just like fly rods that have better "tracking". It's all about the marketing. The more fishermen you get to believe what you are claiming, the more money you will make. If one buys the more accurate rod and it's really not more accurate, it's because he/she doesn't know how to cast it properly. Not the rods fault.

I started mounting rifle scopes on my surf casting rods.... most acurrate rods in the business. The lure lands in the water every time.

I know it means buying another label maker, but click on the custom label maker title on left side of page. Larry has a great label maker that will work for rods and any other labeling needs. Im guessing you are a teacher at that school. If so you will find many uses for their label maker. It's worth a look. MH

Mark brought up a good point above. He believes his lami failed from the guide being ground to a point. Definitely don't shapes guides to arrows. Keep a rounded end that fits the blank diameter.
If you build the rod correctly won't need to underwrap guides. Look at all the high end surf blanks in tackle shops. Most aren't under wrapped. I haven't lost a blank yet to not being under wrapped. I

I prefer the minima 4 guides. They're light and durable. Also, priced right. I only build saltwater fly rods and use on 90% of builds. Running guides, the recoil or snake brand snake guides and the minima single foot guides.

All blanks listed above are good options. I started building on the American tackle bushido fly blanks last season and really like them. You should check them out as well.

X2 Tom, isn't necessary. Make sure you clean all metal burrs off guide feet after grinding down. You don't want to etch the blank with a rough edge.

Never used the flex coat lathe, but I'm sure it works good. I use the grizzly lathe. No complaints. Works great and the sanding disk attachment works good for grinding down large guide feet.
