A 9' surf rod doesn't need 2' butt section. What size reel are you using and are you trying to balance it with the reel mounted? My 9' surf rods have a 15-18" (unless the buyer wants more) butt section and with the reel mounted are well balanced. Adding weight to balance a rod seems absurd to me... especially 6 Oz. The longer the rod the more energy needed to cast, hold, and work the lure. A

A lot of great info. As people have stated, start with the basics. Buy a rod kit that meets your requirements, hand wrapper, single rod dryer, xacto or scissors, wax pencil, thread tools. If you want to find the spine of a rod do it the old fashioned way. You don't need a spine finder. You don't need a rod dryer but it will make it easier. I still have my original single rod dryer but now I use i

They're both good blanks. I've built on both for surf casting for stripers and blues. The 2pcs Croix is great if you don't have roof racks. What lure weight do you think you will use most? Spencer made good points. Good luck

I have a friend that is sponsored by TFO and he uses their fly and spin rods for charters. I haven't repaired his fly guides but his spin guides are a problem. They look more like minima 3 guides but not made as well. I started replacing them with minima 4 guides and they work great. He just received new rods from TFO and now they use fuji alconite guides.

Has anyone built a push pole for flats fishing? I was checking out a carbon sleeve supplier and it got me thinking. I appreciate any input. Thx

X2 Phil. Nothing like loading the rod yourself with different grain lines.

It is thin. I think the flocked 1/16-1/32 " thick.

I use the flocked for fore grips on surf rods. Holds up good with no slip.

I stopped using the recoil stripper guides due to the noise created while stripping line but I do like their snake guides. I use pac Bay minima double foot guides for stripper guides. Very durable and light so I prefer them over other guides. The recoils can sound like finger nails on a chalkboard. Good luck

A bunch of good suppliers to the left. I've had great results with mud, get bit, anglers, utmost, etc. Call one and if they don't answer or respond withing 24 hrs move on to the next but I'm sure you will get an answer from those businesses. What do you need? Good luck. MH

I totally get it Roger. I've done the same with surf rods. Mainly cut the butt to shorten but I do everything I can to guide the customer into buying the length they want. Ive cut the tip of a few rods to make fluke bucktailing rods but again I'm always looking for blanks that fit the build so I don't have to do that. It's a last resort for me. I appreciate the response. Best, Mike

Lots of good info from Tom. I agree with Roger. Best to buy the blank you need rather that cut a blank. So many options these days it shouldn't be hard to find the one you need. Good luck.

Any casting guide with work. Use a heavier guide for heavier applications.

Two piece are great saltwater boat rods. Have a few 2 and 4 piece. I find it easier to pick up a 10 wt line and cast with one back cast. For travel you can't beat a 4 pcs.

What does it matter? The problem is these companies need to deal with their legal issues before sending ridiculous emails and throwing pat numbers around. Let us know the outcome and how that affects our businesses.

Call calstar. You might be able to give them length, tip size and blank diameter in certain locations and they will figure it out. Good luck

If the wrap epoxy is compromised it's builder error. Poorly filled guide feet under the wraps can cause failure. Single foot guides on a heavy duty rod can fracture the epoxy when overloaded. I've seen these problems but all can be avoided by the builder. I've never seen a wrap come loose under the epoxy but I'd have to say is builders error. Before you apply epoxy use perma gloss. Put two co

Joe, thank you for the explanation. The email had me baffled. Especially because I didn't get the follow up email others received. Moving forward... caught a bunch of striped bass on my bushido fly yesterday. That's a great blank. Best, MH
