Will do, just wanted to get a ball park before hand. If someone was like "wow that's WAAAAAY too close," I'd do a little rearranging ahead of time. I ended up using the 27x method and moved the stripper accordingly. It ended up around 18.5 inches away from the spool face, right about where Norm mentioned. I"ll give that a go and see how she casts.

Gents, is 17" too close for a stripper guide on an ultra light? The 6' two piece fiberglass panfish rod from MHX to be precise. It's got a 7" handle. I used the method of aligning the spool with a table edge to place the choker, and I can get the best spacing with the larger guide that places it a little closer. Otherwise, the stripper and reduction guide (only one between stripper

*EDIT* I don't know if this will work, because it looks like that is a plastic spool...NO THANKS! Working on finding a metal one. Well I think I have a solution. I can build up the rod to work with this reel. A replacement spool is only about $7, so I can buy one of those and load it up with braid. Then I can either replace the factory rod from the combo or build a better one later. So I

I'll check that when I get home Roger. I know the tip is a 6.5. I checked it with the calipers but in mm, because I was ordering a new tip top. Decided to use a different guide. Michael, my daughter has a rod that I built her up with the same blank in purple. I think when I was test casting I used a 1/2 oz and it cast really well. I'd guess .5 to be the norm, with the occasional .25 or .7

I guess my first sentence was kind of a no duh...what I meant was that this question regards fishing just as much or more so than rodbuilding. And when I say expected lighter weight, I mean suited for lighter weight line, not literally weigh less.

This question will cross fishing with rodbuilding. I have an Abu Garcia reel that came with a rod I got a while back. I used the rod for experimentation when I discovered rodbuilding (now broken). I now want to use the reel again, but didn't want to spend a lot, so I got a CRB 6'6" IM6 blank in medium power. I chose to go a little heavier than what I was really wanting because I built up

Iwent with the 25. It is a Fin Nor Sport Fisher ST30. It holds 460 yards of 30 lbs mono for size comparison. I don't know much about Avet reels. It was a bit awkward guiding the line on. I think I may just have to get used to it. It was much easier on my 3/0 senator because the spool was so much lower. Didn't get to use it really. I brought it on the trip, but we didn't go to where th

You guys are all awesome! I love this forum. Finished up my two salt water sticks a while back and looking forward to getting the guides on a med bass rod and an UL I'm working on. Gotta clean up my work bench though! Its a bit messy right now.

That's what I was thinking Tom. Based on all the info I've gathered here before I was a bit shocked to see that in the video. Looking forward to my first issue of Rodbuilding. Wife and kids got me a sub for Father's Day.

Well I just meant research on guide placement. I gotta know the basics to build and test cast. The angler resource site has actual layouts to use. I may work off those initially and adjust by casting. Thanks for the help everyone!

Thanks Joe, was wondering if anyone would indulge that question? I am going to go with the Minimas, just gotta do some research on the KR concept.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but with KR system, you set it up like the normal concept and then bring the choker into where the last reduction guide is. Then you reset the reduction train to a straight line path.

Thanks Norm. My biggest concern was with strength, because they are advertised as being for L/UL rods. BTW, the reel is an Abu Cardinal 20. Just emailed Abu Garcia a few days back, and its capable of 8 lbs of drag (there were no specs listed). So 4-5 should be well within its limits. Very strange, because I've built with Fuji concept guides before and had a better experience. I'll try the

Michael, I will try that with a 20 as the stripper and see what it yields. Yes these are all Fuji concept style Y guides. I can place the runners no problem, just can't seem to get a good spacing on the reduction. Also, my reduction train will either be size 4 micros or size 5 single footed guides. The Minimas I have for runners are micros, and due to the small insert, have plenty of room to

First, I was reading this post: and saw that Geoff was talking about the Minima guides as if they were his product, but his signature was for Batson Enterprises. Is Pac Bay affiliated with or owned by Batson? Second, I am having problems with a Fuji concept layout. If required, I may just switch up to different guides, but I have always had good success with concept layouts. The problem is

I recently fished for the first time an RCLB79ML. I dropped cut squid on 6 oz weight and tossed surface iron near the beds. No hook ups with yellows but brought up decent size rockfish no problem. Those things never seem to fight though, just feels like bringing up dead weight. But the action is very nice too, a true XF. It cast like a dream too, wrapped as a spiral with a beefed up Jigmaste

I recently built my first conventional saltwater rod as a spiral. I had a 3.5 or 4 oz lure with a jigmaster reel and that thing flew. If I wasn't on a crowded cattle boat I may have been able to go farther. Backlash was about at my normal rate with a baitcaster and due to my inexperience with the reels. I was recently just a spinner guy. But I only had a few nests over about 30 or so casts.

202. Re: epoxy
Took it out fishing yesterday, there was nothing there to fish for with it, but I jigged a couple times just to get a feel for it. Surprisingly, the bubbles were virtually unnoticeable in full sun, even under close inspection. The only ones I could really find were in the epoxy in the junction of the rod and guide foot where the guide wrap ended (aka near the end of the tunnel). The only plac

Here's the thing I've learned. Build a rod for what you intend to catch. I used to fish for reds off Pensacola beach. I once hooked up with something much larger than a red. My drag couldn't stop it. Presumably it had teeth because all of a sudden the line went slack. I was sad that it got away, and then I caught more reds. If you have your system set up right and use it appropriately, an

I gotta find a happy medium. It seemed to work for me. I'll tell for sure today when I get home and determine if the epoxy is nice and hard. If it is, I'll probably continue this technique until I have issues with it. When I stir by hand, I either introduce bubbles, or if I go slow enough to not intro bubbles, still have swirls at the end of my 4 minute timer. Which then drives me to stir

Oh and Bill, I cleaned it with soap and water...I've already made the mistake of wiping down with DNA before epoxy.

I put just a bit on...not really to my liking. But at least it built it up a little if I add another coat. Didn't really smooth out to blend in with the rest of the already dry epoxy. Did make some headway with my epoxy though. I don't have an automatic mixer so I used a couple brand new 1/4 inch ball bearings leftover from a bicycle wheel rebuild. Just turned the cup around by hand for a

I just put a third and final coat of Flex Coat on my off shore rod. On one guide I got a spot where the epoxy repelled from the previous layer near the edge. And of course it's on the top of the rod, visible while fishing. So my question is can I add a little more when doing the next set of guides? (I've come to realize I'm not good enough/fast enough to do the whole rod, so I broke it into s

Mudhole and GetBitOutdoors both have the intended use on the blank descriptions. If will be different if you're talking inshore, offshore, beach/surf, pier, casting, jigging, trolling, live bait, etc. Will they be fishing for 150 lb tuna or speckled trout? A word about thread from something I read. Size a for example will have a lesser breaking tension than size d. However, you will get mo

Roger as always thanks for the time to post a lengthy informative post! Do you think it will be necessary to remove those last couple guides? I think they will be fine (I hope, planning to fish this in about a week. Also the reason I used a tooth pick is because this was a triple wrap and the first overwrap had a very thin coat of urethane coating on. So the epoxy literally couldn't get int
