Try applying the paint to the bottom of the nib with a toothpick. Do not fill the reservoir, just a drop at the end of the nib, You can also try thinning the paint a little. Was the nib cleaned very well after the first use? Use magnification to see if there is some dried paint in the split.

Is there any information about the International Rod Building Challenge? Criteria? Display times?

Using a single edge razor blade, held 90 degrees to the blank, push away. This will remove the finish very quickly, with minimal chance of damaging the blank. Another option is to use a mild stripper like Citristrip.

there was an article in rodmaker a while back about using temporary Tattoo materials for just this. I believe the article was submitted by Don Morse.

As long as you do it the same every time, it should not matter. Up>Right, down Right or up right, up left. Will give a very subtle difference but only when look at very closely.

During the St. Croix gathering this year, my wife built her first rod in 8 hours, not including epoxy.

Rod Wrapper: Build a manual wrapper with an eye to powering the wrapper later if desired. One motor can power both a wrapper and dryer. Search for messages about DC gear motors.
First blank: Most definitely, a used blank can be used. By using a new guide train that is lighter and spaced correctly, you could see a marked improvement.
This site is a great resource. Check the photo pa

On the guide feet, pack tighter. Every 5 wraps, pack the thread towards the point. Depending on your wrapping tension and the bias on the thread towards the toe, you could pack as much as two threads wraps per pack.
For the bleed though on the tie off wrap, colour preserver will prevent it, mostly:) Light coloured thread over dark thread does tend to show the dark thread to some degree.

Where are you seeing the gaps? In relation to the guide and where it is located on the blank.
I have narrowed guides when they are wider than the blank, and have take the bulges from the sides of the guides off as well, if the guide was wider than the blank.

go to a local machine shop and ask for 7/16 drill rod. Have them put a 60 degree tapered indent in one or both ends. I picked up a number of different sizes. I ream the grip to fit, them use tape bushings to build up the mandrel. Then I turn the shape.

The asymmetry may be due to the mandrel flexing as you apply pressure. Threaded rod is relatively weak. You will be better off using drill rod or commercial mandrel. I will typically ream the grip to size and then using a larger mandrel with masking tape bushings.

I remember, vaguely, that someone put a stainless ring in that location. I seem to remember them looking or a way to cushion the ring from the blank, but I don't remember the outcome of that search. I would think that something that is tough and flexible (Rodbond?), under the ring, would allow the blank to oval sufficiently to all the use of a ring on some sort. The other thought is that most

I have set up a casting rod as a spiral wrap with this guide set. Take your time spacing the guides and transitioning to the bottom and it will work well.

For an ultra-light, I am waiting for the new Airwave microwave guides with stainless steel rings. Don Morse will hopefully chime in on when they should be available. I have been using the Duralite ringed guides and have not had an issue.

if the reel seat is broken, then cut the seat from top to bottom on opposite sides of the seat and use a screw driver to pry the two halves apart.

I use a threaded rod for gluing up, but use plumber's Teflon tape to prevent sticking. I then move the grip to a turning mandrel for shaping.

If shortening the rod is an option, replace the existing female ferrule with a new ferrule.

What broke on the rod? The ferrule? The lower section that goes into the Ferrule?

I use tape on the male portion of the rod or scrap. If you are uneasy about tape, use wax paper.

If you are planning on working out of your house(official business address), check the local zoning bylaws to ensure that it is allowed. If not an additional expense may be incurred for a mail box.
