Michael, thanks for measuring your Amtak blank. I didn't find any data for the 1wt or the 2wt Finesse series but did find the 7'9" 3wt. The ERN is 2.7 and the AA is 62. If I can talk him into a 4 piece blank, it fits the bill for a 2wt moderate action (and it's relatively inexpensive especially when compared to the Sage blanks). I hadn't looked before because he wanted no bigger than a 2wt

Michael, I'd love to know what you come up with on your Amtack blank, you can either message me or just add it to this thread. Been looking through what seems to be hundreds of blanks and I have found that both CTS and Dorber offer a 2 piece blank in that 7.5-8' length in a 2wt. There are a few others that offer 4 piece blanks. But the customer is against (at least as of now) anything more than a

Ray, you might try posting a "new topic" from toward the top of the screen. It's doubtful that many will see your question as this is tied in on my thread about Common Cents System and not the main forum page. Good luck with your build!

Thanks for weighing in Tom, I'm learning bunches everyday thanks to you and the all the others who respond and are so willing to help. Michael, to correct myself the AA of that Batson F763-2 it varies from 62-65. Not nearly the amount of variation as the ERN.

Michael, thank you as well. I think that you are right about the ERN of the blanks being midrange of the line rating like a 3wt should have an ERN of 3.5 as I know (please correct me if I read the CCS info stuff wrong). He is adamant about no "heavier" than a 2wt because of an article he read on extreme ultralight panfishing. He wouldn't mind going even lighter. If I'm not mistaken, the

Thanks, Terry. That makes a lot of sense. Drop the highest and lowest and take an average like any statistician would do. And still searching. If he would "settle" for a 4 piece blank it would open up all kind of possibilities. I did see the Pac Bay rainforest 2 7'6" 4wt has an ERN of 2.7 and is "moderate" but not sure if that would be an average ERN or a "fluke&qu

In my search for an ultralight blank/ fly blank, I came across the CCS info for the Batson F763-2. Can anyone tell me why there is such a big difference in the data for this blank? I've seen everything from an ERN of 2.08 to 4.01 with 8 results for what appears to be the same blank. Is this a difference in the measuring process, a difference in manufacture (scrim, old vs new) or is there that muc

Michael, agreed and did give him the option of less expensive blanks. Among the blanks that I told him about were the Amtak blanks, Batson blanks, Sage, Orvis,Lamiglas, St Croix, Dorber and TFO and told him since we were building "against" the recommended usage of the blank that it probably wouldn't hurt to use a blank from one of the not so big names (at least outside of the rod buildi

Thanks, Terry. I had purposefully overlooked the Lami blanks because of the line rating. I should've thought that through a little better. The glass a lot of times will throw multiple line weights at different distances. I have seen your name on here a few times before and it makes me smile. Had a teacher in high school named Terry Turner who was a huntin', fishin' fool. I always enjoyed ta

Thank you, Ray. I will check the stats on that blank, might be a little short for what he's wanting, but definitely an option.

Thank you, Gene. I would like to present him with as many options as possible. (And would love to get my hand on one of the Helios 2 blanks that everyone seems to be loving) Appreciate the help.

Razvan, not familiar with the Dorber blanks. But you have definitely peaked my interest. Do you know if any of our sponsors carry them?

Randolph and Michael thanks to both of you. Randolph, do you have any preferences on a full flex blank in that 2 wt range? I see both the Orvis superfine and maybe the TFO finesse are reasonable on cost. Or do you think it's even necessary to build on a "slower" blank? I know I should probably stay away from the fast or x-fast blanks as they are commonly a heavier line weight Michael,

Michael, I think you are spot on. The Phenix blank I built was a 1 piece (his choice) I think he is wanting to go to a 2 piece out of necessity, but talking him into more pieces than that would be darn near impossible. I really do think that he is wanting a fly blank. But the thing is he wants the lightest, slowest blank he can get his paws on. I know a lot of the blank companies won't warranty a

Todd, thanks for the info. I look at the catalog over and over and missed the fact that your 871-2 blank is listed as a "mod" action. I have built quite a few of your Ultralight blanks and l like them a lot (building up 4 presently for Christmas presents). The length might be an issue, but will consult him to see what he thinks. I know the other blanks (most recently the SP781) that I'

To all, I have a customer who is wanting a true "buggy whip" action ultralight spinning rod capable of throwing 1/32oz lures. His requests were that it be between 7.5-8 ft and a 2 piece blank. He and I have both entertained the idea of building on a 0 or 1 wt full flex fly blank. I built a 7'7" Phenix mirage blank for him that he loves, but his 2 drawbacks are that it is hard to

Chris, to piggyback on what Bill Falconer said, I use a metal lid off a Testors model paint bottle, tap it with a small sheet metal screw and place it on the Permagloss bottle immediately. It's the same size and thread as the Permagloss. If I need a shot of Permagloss, I can partially unscrew the screw (or take it all the way out depending on how much I need), dribble or pour the permagloss out,

Ron, Just checked Bingham's site. Not finding a SHX764-4. I saw a 6'6" 2wt and a couple nine footers in 5 and 6 wts. Does anyone know if this blank was discontinued?

Thank you Phil, I was kinda wondering about overlining a 3 wt rod as well. If I do that, it sure opens up a lot more options on the shorter end. I might be able to throw a 6'6" or 7 footer in the equation. You bring up a great point, the "speed" of the rod is the sum of all 3 parts: blank, line & caster. Torin, I haven't built on a pac bay fly blank yet, not going to count t

Thanks, Phil. I am torn between the two and was wondering if there were any other "slower" or "not so fast" blanks that I was just missing at this price point. There are still a couple of 5 piece models floating around (at least at one sponsor). That's why I was even considering it. I have built a couple rods on the F905-5 and thought the action on those blanks would serve

I have a customer who is wanting a short (6'6" to 7'6") multiple piece travel rod. He is wanting something from a moderate to moderate fast action blank to use for dry flies and small terrestrials. His requests were to keep the blank price at or below $100 and that it be at least a 4 piece blank for easy transport. I have been pouring over multiple blanks lately and the trend for &qu

Was wondering if anyone out there has painted a blank in Air Force blue. I'm thinking of making an Air Force themed rod for a friend and was wondering if there was a premix spray out there that was close. It's a little tough for me to just go to a hobby store or auto parts store and just grab some blue...I'm color blind and it's a hassle to drag my wife into town to find that perfect color match.

Chris, I just put a pre-epoxy photo of the wrap on the photo page. Please don't judge, that was one of my first rods, long before I started doing the Forhan lock. But at least it will give you an idea of the color scheme. I am having my buddy send me pics of the marbling. Hope this helps a little. Good luck and let me know how you ended up wrapping it.

Maybe I have some pics. If I don't have one somewhere, I'll run over to his house (he only lives about 1 mile from me.) I've been looking for an excuse to get on the photo page. I'll let you know when I post it. Warning! The color scheme is not for the faint of heart or stomach. But it's what he wanted.

I've actually done a couple of these blanks for some friends who wanted an inexpensive "crazy looking" rod. One of them I wrapped in orange/black tiger wrap then marbled the butt section in orange, green, white and purple. It was really crazy looking. The other I just finished wrapping this am in purple. If you're not looking for something to mimic, try looking at a color wheel, it

Bill, I'm excited to build on these new blanks. I saw Kevin at GetBit outdoors a couple weeks ago right after the trade show and he was obviously excited about these new lines. Excited enough that he got me excited about them as well. Can't wait to get my hands on them.
