Thanks Roger, I think you're correct, if it has enough "oomph" in the mid, it should do just fine without the extension.

Thank you Tom, I was thinking that a "Frankenstein" rod would be one of the only ways to go. You bring up a good point on the euro match and coarse rods. I'm admittedly not familiar with them, but have been looking a little at them since your suggestion. I'm thinking that this fellow wanted off "on the cheap" and don't think he would be anywhere willing to pay for the amount o

I think I know the answer to this question, but I would rather ask those with a lot more experience and knowledge in the matter. I had a request for a 20 ft long trolling rod for crappie. This gentleman said that he would rather have something very stiff except for the last 4-5 feet of the rod. He said the present rods offered in this length are too soft in the mid sections of the blank. He wants

Spencer, I think you are correct about all of the RodGeeks blanks being made in Mexico, but I'm not certain. Maybe someone can chime in.

The brands that James and Spencer mentioned plus Rogue Rods and Liberty Rods. I'm sure that I'm missing one right now but I can't for the life of me think of what it is. Also there are a couple of St Croix's are made in Mexico (someone please correct me, but I'm assuming it is the SCII line)

Tom, that looks great and I might have to steal your color scheme for my daughter when she's old enough to reel in a fish. And Chris, Tom is right on the Krylon, it's much cheaper than auto paint. As far as the blanks go, I have used both, the Jann's are a slow action (like a buggy whip) where the MHX panfish blanks are more moderate. So the rod speed would be up to you. Be sure to post pics when

Chris, I do agree with Roger that you don't want to spend much money on a child's rod that can be thrown over the gunwale of a boat or mistreated only the way a 4 year old can mistreat it. I will say that I built both of my young sons fishing rods when they were 4 years old, but i did it on the cheap. I picked up a couple of cheap fiberglass blanks from Jann's Netcraft and built them up with in

Robert, I have noticed that there is a huge difference in the colors of Testors model paint and how well they "flow" when using a metal nib and a calligraphy type pen. White is especially difficult as are most of the other "regular" colors (like gloss blue, red and yellow) in enamel and acrylic. I've found that the enamel in silver flows the best. Gold also works well with fre

Jeff, x3 on the Revelation or even the RX6 blanks depending on your casting style. The Revelation is somewhat "faster" than the RX6, but both are nice quality for the money. I've built on both and they are received well. I am building an RX6 6'6" 4 piece 2 weight right now.

Chris, you should call GetBit (see sponsor lift on left.) Kevin and the guys have the fishoflauge pattern. They have the med and ml blanks listed on the site, but if I remember correctly, they can hydro dip. I know you said you'd rather not have the added expense of the dipping, but I think that the cost is pretty reasonable. That way you could get a high quality blank of your choosing and have i

Ray, I also wanted a blended color for this build. I ended up using Madeira sapphire blue with a silver trim. Fuji titanium stripper and recoil single foots. I do believe that you'll enjoy casting that rod, like Roger said, they're light in the hand, responsive and very accurate. If I had the rod to do over again, I would've built it with snake brand universals.

Thanks Mr Hart for your reply. That helps, I'm sure that is somewhat comparable to the temps he fishes in.

Thanks, Jim. That particular Point Blank model, a MHX popping rod and maybe adding a couple of inches on the butt of a slightly shorter extra fast action rod are my short list right now. It was good to speak with you yesterday and appreciate your input and your ability to humbly admit that you couldn't answer my question, but that you would find out the answer. That speaks volumes. Have a great

Norm thanks for the clarification. For some reason I was thinking that popping style blanks were usually a more moderate taper. Brain lapse. ha ha. Yes, Tom. Understand completely, I'm just not very familiar with popping rod blanks. I've only built a couple of them. Thank you both for your suggestions. The popping rod blank just might be the one that fits this niche...Appreciate the help

Anyone with any experience fishing high modulus rods in sub-freezing temps tell me if the "brittleness" of the higher modulus graphite comes into play? I guess what I'm asking is do you think the blank becomes MORE brittle in really cold temps? Trying to get a build together for someone who fishes swift water on the Maumee River close to Lake Erie starting in February.

Norm, this may sound like a dumb question, but the popping rod that you're speaking of, is it an extra fast tip or just an extra fast for a popping rod?

Thank you, guys. I really should've told you in the original post that he's typically throwing 5/8-3/4 oz so that's really pushing it for a dropshot blank, but that's the speed I'm looking for. That's why I wondered about the spin jig type of blank. I've been pouring over the books and stats and am wondering if the Point Blank PB731MXF would work (if he's willing to part with the extra dough)

Anyone with any experience with the Bushido spin jig SJ72/8-15 that could compare the tip speed to the Fenwick HMG 70M-FS? Looking for a rod with a soft, fast tip section and a good backbone. this rod will be used for the Walleye run on the Maumee River drifting egg sinkers behind floating jig heads and curly tail grubs. My customer likes the Fenwick, but said he would like something that gets i

My first build was a "kit" that I told my wife I wanted for my birthday..just to try it out. Once I had built a couple rods, I began to beg my friends and family to "just give me money for parts and I will build you a better rod." There are still some family members and close friends that I do this for. Practice as much as your finances (and your in-laws' finances) will allow.

If you want to minimize your costs you can always use a box or two with a "V" cut into either side, run your thread through a book to provide tension. If you have scrap wood, small stands are easy to make. I use automotive grade felt padding on my home made stands and wrapper. That being said, take a look at the photo page (link above) and go to the "tools and equipment" secti

Thank you, Jay. Did see those and still wishing for a customer that is willing to fork out the extra dough on those NFC's. I have yet to build on one, but am looking forward to that day. I mentioned the NFC to him, but he's not a big fan of the Loomis tapers. (To each his own) appreciate the suggestion, sir.

Thanks Tom, I had read your response on the other thread, added a couple new photos, started a new thread in case some of these other pics might spark a memory. I had tried googling some of the names you suggested and was hoping for a decent pic with a known blank. I had assumed that it was an S-glass blank mostly because it is so light in weight. Is there a way to discern between the e-glass and

Gary, I have a Fenglass blank here as well. Unless they had a couple of different "types" of Fenglass or a different finish over the years, it's not like the one I have on hand (it's a SP632). The color is slightly different and the Fenglass has a glossy smooth finish on it. Here's a pic comparing the mystery blank to a Fenglass and a E-glass Fenwick blank. Not saying you're wrong, it'

I'm starting a new thread because I hijacked my own thread a few days ago. I have multiples of these blanks from a deceased rodmaker and I'm trying to figure out who might have manufactured them. I will describe them as much as I can with as much detail as I can. I've also posted pics in the miscellaneous section of the photo page. These blanks are what I'm assuming is a higher quality S-glass po

Do you have a tip top gauge? I have had that happen both ways..rod tip too big (bigger than listed size) and had a supplier send the wrong tube size. Kevin and the guys there at GetBit are usually pretty good about fitting a tip if you ask them to do so. It's definitely a pain to order the listed size and a size up everytime. Especially if you don't build a lot or you use lots of manufacturer gui

Thank you Ron, that's why I love the forum.. All this knowledge wrapped up in one place. I wondered about a moderate action initially, and read that a faster tip might work a little better. I have built a few themed spin cast rods in UL and L powered rods and they performed well. Just wasn't sure if the "softer" blank would work as well on a baitcast rod. Always learning and trying to p
