So where the heck do you measure the blank at? I'm OK with buying two or three seats for the first time and a rat tail file...I'll learn a lot after doing the first one. Right now I am thinking center of my desired cutout location, but what I don't know is where do the reelseat manufacturers consider the correct measuring point to correspond with their sizing procedures? I already have the bla

Where do you take your measurement ? The front of the reel seat? the rear of it? The front of the cutout? the rear of it? or the middle of the cutout? Which location will give you the size needed to order the seat? Steve Buchanan Steve's Custom Rods

I have been building for a while now, mostly spinning rods and a few baitcasters. Most of my clientele (make that ALL of my clientele) are Bass fishermen. I have now come to the point where I need to make some with blank-thru reel seats, and I haven't done this yet. On the spinning reel seats, the seat is always larger than the blank and it is a simple matter of making arbors and gluing the s

I have a little system that works for me. When I bought my first flexcoat it came with two syringes and two very small bottles of the two parts. It was easy to just stick the tip of the syringe down into the little bottles and pull the FC up into the syringe. I pull it completely full and squeeze back out until I reach either 3cc or 2cc, whichever I think I am going to need. This worked so go

You have been given a lot of good information. All I can add is my 2 cents on the rainshadow blank question. I build mostly bass rods and I love them. You get a lot of performance for not a lot of money. Order them with confidence. I also suggest Fish Stix 4 you as a source. They have been great to deal with. Pick any color combination for the thread wraps you want for your personal rods.

For blanks, I go with Fish Sticks 4 you. Everything else I get from Mudhole, Neals, or Janns Netcraft. I'm sure all of the sponsors are good to deal with but these are the first ones I dealt with and have had no reason to look elsewhere. I feel comfortable in saying that anything you could possibly need can be found by searching the websites of the sponsors. I especially like the cart-type

I use glitter almost all the time unless the customer specifically doesn't want it. They will ALWAYS have seen it before hand if they have seen any of my personal rods. When I first started, I took everyone's advice about "A little goes a long way" and I was not thoroughly pleased with the results. They are right...A little DOES go a long way...but my personal taste goes to a bit mor

Wal-Mart has some clear nylon in the sewing section....they have it in a smokey gray (just like a blank) and in clear. I have used it and it DOES dissappear.

I bought a Kistler rod last year and fell in love with the hook keeper on it. It works better than any other I have seen. You can even hook up a soft plastic bait without pulling the hok out of the bait. One heavy duty paper clip makes two hook keepers with a pair of needle nosed pliers and about a minutes time...I made a bunch and put them on every rod I have.

I am an avid bass fisherman. Since I saw George's site about 6 months ago, I have changed ALL my rods, both casting and spinning to split rear grip and no foregrip. I love the look and the feel. I have also re-wrapped 6 of my baitcasting rods spiral....Love that too. I recently built myself a drop shot rod and didn't put a speck of cork on it. As soon as I figure out how to work my wife's di

I have a finish nail driven into the wall angled slightly upward coming out from the wall. I just stick the hollow butt of the blank over the nail and the blank hangs almost horizontal in a corner of my shop where there is no traffic. This has worked great for me so far.

I've been having pretty good success with painting blanks. Just finished turning a gray blank on my little girls rod to pink. I did one in red for my wife, and am going to start a purple one for my other daughter and also a purple one for a customer. Krylon fusion spray paint works great. Some Auto body paints work well too...I spray spar urethane over the color as a clear coat...works just f

Not long ago I had just put a rod I was particularly proud of my workmanship on, in the dryer and it had been turning for about 20 mins. My son handed my wife a school notebook to look at just as we were headed out the door. Not having time to look at it right then, she turned and kinda tossed it on the table....wrong table...landed right on the butt wrap @#$#$#% it was just tacky enough to gr

I use glitter in my flexcoat quite a bit. I am not doing a rod which needs purple glitter. I have everything mudhole offers but chartreuse and black. Can't seem to find purple anywhere. I have fuchsia but it won't do in this case. Does anyone know if there is a sponsor who has it in purple? I fully expect someone to suggest Michael's but the problem is that I live nearly 100 miles from the

I am repairing a Bass Pro Shops Pro Series MegaCast IM6 Spinning rod. It has one missing guide. the owner wants me to find and replace it. The problem is....these guides have extremely long legs on them. I have never seen such long-legged guides...I ordered a Fuji Hardloy for it because it looked more like it than anything I could find....It was nowhere near as tall....Anyone familiar with th

I recently had my first problem with the Flexcoat not hardening....Strange coincidence that it occured the day AFTER I read the post about Epoxy failure. I followed the entire thread and unfortunately didn't find advice on the fix after the problem has occurred. My question is....Does this mean take the affected guides off and re-wrap, or can you just put a coat of properly mixed flexcoat on to

Personally, I like the sliced masking tape......Don't matter much if alignment isn't perfect because you always adjust them just before putting on the Flex-Coat. I have a customer who wants me to replace all the guides on two custom casting Bass rods that he has had problems with. (I didn't make em) His complaint is that the rings keep falling out of the frames. He has tried glueing them back several times. He wants me to buy new guide sets. I haven't been doing this long enough to be really familiar with all the guides that are available. My questio

I asked the better half today if she'd like to go to the show and she said yes.... I can't wait. The question is this....she mentioned that our kids might be interested in the experience too. I'm not so sure about that but in case they are.....Is there an admission price for kids, or do they pay full price?
