My daughter wanted her cheap Wal-Mart ultralite rod painted pink. While I had it stripped down, I cut the grip down to a split grip as well. I used Krylon fusion as a first coat, but I didn't like the color of pink...(too white)...I re-coated with another brand of pink spray paint which I had tested on a broken piece of rod ...(the tip end) I coated it and let it dry and bent it to see if it w

Oh yeah, I wrapped it two to three layers deep on the guide wrap. It is so thin and lies so flat I find it very forgiving as far as wrapping back over itself goes. If I have gaps, instead of packing like I would do with regular thread.... I just wrap back over the gaps and can't tell the difference. I'm not saying that I recommend it for guide wraps, I just decided to experiment with a rod of m

Just missin you Pal....glad to hear that you are still among us...I'm so sorry about your losses this year. I can feel for you my friend. I had a year kinda like that....1990...Lost Dad, Grandad, and little brother that year...Plus a divorce....It really sucked...but time marches on and things DO eventually get somewhat better. I hope and pray that time will heal your pain quickly. Hope to see

Has anybody heard from Putter? Does anybody know if he is alive and well? I sure hope so...I emailed him a couple of weeks back at the address he has on this site and it was returned undelivered. If you have heard from him lately or have a way of contacting him...please let me know...thanks in advance. Steve Buchanan Steve's Custom Rods

As for me... I love the Prizm. I use it a LOT for decorative wraps. I also tried it (knowing I would probably meet with failure) to wrap the guides on my heavy action pig-n-jig rod. I covered it with threadmaster and have fished one entire tournament season so far (including several good fish) without any sign of wear or weakening. Must be the Threadmaster...LOL Steve Buchanan Steve's Cu

I have been building for about a year now and I have counted 38 rods for both myself and customers. I have re-build a good two dozen and quite a few guide replacements. Basically, enough to keep me very busy, but not enough to quit the day job (machinist)...Would like to have a steady flow of about 5 or 6 a week to build, but it comes in spurts....goes from covered up to short dry spells. I have a fenwick fenglass rod that a customer wants a guide replacement on. The blank is brown as is the thread. I assume fenwick has a standard color for these rods but I don't know what it is. If you know what color this is, please let me know. Thanks in advance. Sorry I haven't posted in a while but my puter at home is messed up. I am on a borried one, Steve Buchanan Steve's Custo

A while back I saw a post that mentioned keeping Color Preserver in the other end of the shop from Micro-Set & Micro Sol. My question is....What is the specific danger? Does the house burn down? Does the explosion send me to the moon? Does the rod melt into the floor as if coated in acid. Are there fumes, that when inhaled, causes 17 generations of my offspring yet to be born to come into

If the ID is in the ball park on the small side, a rat-tail file will take care of the rest in short order. I agree with Tom. Fitting the hand is more of a concern with me. Steve Buchanan Steve's Custom Rods

Mudhole has a palming reelseat from American Tackled which I use a lot....I do it without anything at all except a winding check in the front of the reel seat and one in the back of it. I am a split grip guy tho and I have sold a ton of these. Steve Buchanan Steve's Custom Rods

I have only been doing this for about 10 months. So far I have stripped down and re-wrapped, painted blanks, cut down to split grip, re-wrap spiral, etc...29 rods including several of my own and have build a total of 18 rods, 14 of which were for customers. I am a machinist by trade but if I could get a steady 5 or 6 rods a week to build, I would do nothing but build rods and fish. At least th

I use them a lot and I put it on as soon as the Color Preserver dries...about an hour...You probably don't really have to use CP, but I don't take chances. I put a coat of flexcoat Color Preserver on the fish and it works well for me. Steve Buchanan Steve's Custom Rods

Like a dummy I was trying to upload some photos of my first attempts at crosswrapping and sent a couple of them twice thinking I was sending a different pic. I can't find a way to delete the extras. Can you do it? or tell me how if it can be done from this end...They are in the thread art gallery... Thanks... Steve Buchanan Steve's Custom Rods

So far I have used flexcoat high build with complete satifaction. I am almost finished with a 32 oz. kit of it and am about to order a 32 oz. kit of threadmaster next. I too, have seen Andy's test sticks and can't wait to give it a try. I will probably switch to Threadmaster for the majority, if not all my wrap finishing needs. Even if I were to change, I still don't have a single bad thing t

I'm with Billy on this one...Sometimes I do them first and sometimes last. Works both ways...whatever you are in the mood for. For example if you are waiting for your guides to come in and want to get some work done...do the butt wrap (I usually have a split grip to do as well so there's plenty to do) Sometimes when I wrap the guides first, and realize that I am going to have to position the r

I bought one of those Kistler Helium rods and I use it all the time. I like it but it hasn't floated away as yet. LOL...actually, that rod is what got me into rod building. I paid $230 for this rod...thats at least $100 more than I had ever spent to that point on a rod. Sure, it was light, but it wasn't pretty. Wrapped all in black with the only color being those blue guide inserts and tiny t

I haven't messed with foam grips up to this point. So far it's been cork or nothing with me. Now my wife is wanting a red foam grip on a rod she is going to build for herself. (Her first)...I imagine that either EVA or Hypalon will do equally well and both are readily available. My question is mostly one from a curiosity standpoint.....What is the difference?...advantages, disadvantages, compo

All you gotta do is set the guide spacing up as if you weren't going to wrap it spiral. Then you move all the guides except the biggest one, closest to the reel seat, 180 degrees (to the bottom). Then you add 1 additional guide (the bumper guide) This guide should be small and sit very close to the blank. (small ...#6 SF works good) exactly half way between the first two guides. This one is a
