The word POWER can be used as a noun, verb or an adjective. Power has meaning only in the context it is used. When talking power in reference to rod blanks the participants have to be on the same page. Example, My rod has the power (ability) easily land a 50lb fish or my rod has the power (ability) to cast a lure very far. One example refers to the mechanical strength of the rod, the other ex

Chris I am glad the metric system works best for you. Folks who have mastered fractions have no problem using them. I also wrote "For those who feel the metric system is the only way go I support, encourage and respect your choice but don't try to force it on me or others who are not interested in changing." I got your message and there is a 1/64th chance that I will conver

The forum is intended to share information and help folks solve problems related to rod crafting, so I fail to see how my countries measurement standards or the inclusion or lack of the metric system would make me or anyone else a better craftsman. so to me this discussion is not relevant. The US system has been around more than just decades its been around for well over 200 years and has don

Cutting off 3 inches from the butt moves the grip point closer to the tip changing the fulcrum point. Yes, any alteration to a blank changes its characteristics, the extent of this change is a point of debate that usually ends in resentment or bruised egos I usually grip my rod between the pinky and ring finger but there are times I grip the rod between my fore and middle finger. When I cast s

Lynn If you were to go out for a beer and I sneaked in your shop and cut 3 in from the butt, you would never know it. Unless you measured the length. John

Try packing the thread tight and carefully burnish the wrap, try it with CP or without CP. see if that helps. John

The only communication link from your lure to your rod tip is the fishing line. The fact that all lines are not "created equal" means this communication signal varies from line to line. Anything pecking, slapping, bumping will never be felt unless there is some tension in the line from the lure to the tip of the rod. When the "worm is slapped" the bump is transmitted thru t

I managed to get a quantity of Krytox lubricant by Dupont for my son, he restores vintage pinball machines and Juke boxes, he uses it on relays and mechanical components. I did some nosing around and come to the conclusion that it is really good stuff and also expensive. Anyone have any experience with this lubricant. Any comments about the quality of the product are appreciated. Th

Over the years it seems I have use just about every type of line (non fly) there is. None of them stood out as exceptional and I caught fish with all of them. This is where the therapists get busy. I tend to use any line that is on sale or line I get as samples from sports shows, this year I got some at ICAST. Now like anything else, whenever there is a change one has to make adjustments i

Ron Thank you for sharing that experience it was very informative.. Your story proves to me that one uses just enough guides to accomplish a specific task, in this case how many guides do I need to be able to use 2# test line and this blank for a world record Striper. In your example the weight of the line determined the number and layout of the guides. The bottom line is, rods shoul

For spinning and bait casting; I start with an old rule "a guide for each foot of rod plus one". I tape the guides to the blank run some static line line pulls check the lay of the line along the blank adjust the guides and add or eliminate a guide if required. Once satisfied with the static pull, I put on the reel and do some casting and fishing and make any further adjustments,

IMO any strength differences are insignificant, it is the reaction of the threads with the epoxy that concerns me. It depends on which thread color is used. A slight color change is acceptable if it is uniform, but when the wrap has spots, runs or blotches, that is unacceptable. Black thread is the only color that has never given me any issues if I use CP or not.. There is no correct a

Your plan sounds great. You may consider making a small plug from a wood dowel or plastic rod 1/2" long or less and bond the plug in the end of the butt section.. The blank will bottom out on the plug instead of the butt cap. Have fun John

Sounds like contamination and we can only guess the source. One area that often gets overlooked is air borne contaminates. Source of these contaminants may be from dust (air filters), from aerosol products, air fresheners, oil, cooking vapor, deodorants, bug sprays. The possibilities are too numerous to mention, my point is contamination can come from other sources than direct handling. Re

I will give you the safe answer. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer, because if one has issues with the product the first question asked is “did you follow the manufacturer’s instructions”. If you deviate from the MFG recommendations and the results exceeds expectation you are a winner, if it does not then resort back to the manufacturer’s instructions or try another variation.

You did not say what the grip material was. If it is cork then get a cork ring and glue it on to the end of the tenon then shape the ring to fit the butt cap. If it is foam get a foam ring and do the same. Have fun John

The trick is to start with a arbor that has a larger diameter than the reel seat. Drill out the arbor to a hole size close to the rod blanks minimum diameter and mount the arbor on the mandrel. Chuck the mandrel to a lathe, drill press, or drill, now turn down the OD of the arbor to fit the reel seat, at this point the bore and the OD of the arbor should be concentric.. Use a tapered rea

My interpretation from forum posts is that any non –functional weight should be avoided because of the adverse effect it may have on the rods performance and that is reasonable. However the reality is that we can only control the building process but not the real life occurrences. I plan to present a little satyr. So I have to set up some conditions. A drop of water weighs approximately .05

To me it means that there were 20% more participants than last year. I noticed that there was a larger number of "cottage industries" present. Promoting lures, line, clothing, specialty items, hardware and other odds and ends. All the big manes were there and many lesser known trying to break into the industry. What caught my attention was the increased number of battery manufactu

Eric That was very informative thank you for the effort. If I understand the comparison, the size 4 stainless ring is .016 gm heavier than the size 4 ceramic ring guide. Would you please go into more detail as to why this finding made you "a bit more wary of the stainless ringed guides out there". Again thanks for sharing this information

I have been known to dress (file down) the foot of a reel to fit an existing rod. If there is no drastic material removal required there should be no danger of compromising the integrity of the reel. If the existing reel seat fits you well and you can trim down the reel foot then go for it. Don't compromise by using a larger uncomfortable reel seat to satisfy the reel.. Have fun
