Brad, I wanted to send you a private e-mail but your e-mail is hidden. 'Tis ok wit me. Just not wanting to make too many posts here or beat a subject to death. But, you might consider using a single foot guide for a tip top instead of the traditional tubular slide on tip top. It has been recommended to me and I am going to do it on my first rod I am building. Least it eliminates the tube glue p

I called Neal's Fishing and he invited me down to spend some free time with him at his warehouse. He supplies parts for rod builders. He already knew I had bought a blank from someoneelse and probably was not going to buy anything from him. He charges for rod building lessons. He SHOWED me things visually and by demonstration.....things that I couldn't seem understand about the spine via books an

Mr. Stevens that is a great post. I really like it when someone will admit his error. I do it all the time but very few others do. It's so cool. I now wish I could send you my can of just Tru Oil I went and bought at Wal-Mart with no instructions at all and you could send me what you didn't want! I could still send it..........<grin> Is a high speed lathe necessary to follow their proc

Mike.....Gerry can surely answer for himself....I just wonder if he said the same thing as you did....just in a different way? Maybe.........Maybe not! Doug....I have seen your comments before and they are worth a lot more than 2 cents IMHO. I was thinking further up the rod even. Guess not a good idea. Was thinking that if it was on the exact opposite of a guide it could not line wrap at a

When using long leaders and the typical hook keeper at the handle the leader and tippet run clear back in the rod. I see people wrap their leader around the reel and back toward the tip and hook in an eylet. Don't think this a good idea for my ceramic guides. Workin on my first rod so pls cut me some slack. What are the drawbacks, if any, of mounting a collapsable hook keeper on top of the rod sa

Sorta can be trivia to your use of zip ties...sorta can be serious. You CAN cut the tag end off with dykes or diagonals but it is not a good idea. You can get what are known as flush cutters that will cut the tag end off flush with the head. If you use diagonals...usually it will cut at an angle and the part that still sticks ouf of the head is like a sharp plastic knife. You move your arm over

Just received my new single foot guides in the mail, for a 9' 4wt. I am fixing to do just that. Use a single foot guide instead of a tip top. Haven't figured it all out yet but the last 3-6 guides will all be #6 ceramic single foot guides....including the tip top. I think these guides keep line more distant from the rod blank itself and the centerline of all the last guides, to include the tip w

Jim Wow! 4x? That sounds good. I have a pair of 3.5x glasses from Wal Mart but don't like to use them. I was thinking a 2.5 was kinda low. 4x Sounds real good. ICW the mini flex magnifier I mentioned.....I actually haven't used it. But, I took it to a local non expert fly rod building class.....which I already dropped out of. But 3 out of the 5 there used it while I was doing other stuff.....p

Got it. Thanks putter. A friend had a pair and pointed those out at his fly tying desk a few months ago and said they were great. Only thing he will use now. There is a dandy little clip on magnifier that clips on your bench or desk with a flexible shaft. I will hunt up on the web and post the web site for you to see. Just as an FYI. Thanks later

Garcia's book suggests setting the first stripping guide off 20 degrees, if I remember correctly, toward the stripping hand. Any opinions on this? Anyone tried it?

In the Library, in Rich Forhan's "Perfect Epoxy Wraps" there is a paragraph on "APPLICATION" In that paragraph he explains how he applies the finish using the 100 rpm motor. But then.......he says he turns off the motor, removes the rubber tip, and THEN turns by hand and does the "eye" side of the guide with a smaller spatula?" I don't understand that. I though

Lou....what are binnocular magnifiers? Could you possibly refer to an exact website and where to see them, or a page number in a Cabelas catalog? I THINK I know what you mean. But not familiar with the term binnocular magnifiers. Would appreciate your help. Rod.....you might want to try all the techniques yourself, to find out what works best for you. Probably no single technique is going to

ICW with my guide sizes....I think Andy knew where I was going with it....and I appreciate his approval. Just FYI.....after the single foot #7 I am going ALL the way with #6's, including a #6 single foot guide for the tip as opposed to the tubular standard tip top. Again, I think Andy had that all figured out before he even posted........but fyi anyway. Thanks Andy

Well men, you too Tom. Ahhhh....just kiddin' ....since I didn' t use a last name I guess I didn't insult anybody. uh.....PARDON ME about the Aussie post. I just clicked on the Decal Connections on the left and was there in a heartbeat. Makes me wonder if I should ever try to offer a helpful post, since I obliviously don't know what I am talking about. One thing for sure, I sure do learn a lot

ICW with green rod thread color choice......kinda buttin in but a see thru and final finish look is mentioned here. I have a dark green blank, similar to an Orvis. Since it's my first rod, I don't even want the thread to show, let alone the foot. I bought some single foot Fuji Alconites in black. I have heard when I file them the will turn shiny silver. How can I mount and cover these guides wher

ICW stripping guides and arm length.......doesn't vary much? Well, when I was fitted for custom golf clubs I was informed boaf my arms were 1/2" shorter than the normal person of my heigth and shoulder width. If both my arms are 1/2" shorter than perhaps some standard, I am sure gonna fit that stripping guide to fit me, instead of a standard chart. I wonder how many people know the diff

just trivia FYI, icw Australia, I tried a few times to get to Australia to look into the Dingo fly viseand was NEVER able to get through or connect. I only have dial up internet svc. But, the point is, I personally am not going to do anything with Australia simply because my communications with them doesn't work. My computer not that old either. I like the looks of it. I want to build the exact same rod you are going to build, someday. Appreciate your post. I didn't know you could go all cork for light weight on a small rod. Good info for me. Now, I shoulda thought of it because I have a 30+ year old 4 piece Garcia Conolon combo rod, spin and or fly cast. It uses the sliding rings for holding the reel.....I haven't fished with it a whole

David, Thanks for that. I have heard so much about going up one weight in the fly line, therefore the question about what line to use. I remember reading about how it affects distance, I need to go back and re-read. But, distance is what I am interested in. And a long rod that not going to wear me out too quick. What a cool website this is. I know I can buy back issues of Rodmaker Mag. I am no
