I was changing the guides on a Fenwick 8'6" medium graphite spinning rod and broke it 2 feet from the tip while static testing to adjust the guide placement. What do you think would be the best repair technique? I'm planning to use a fiberglass tapered insert, epoxied and with a wrap 3 inches on either side of the break. Thanks.

Thanks Guys. Really great information here, and a lot to consider. I'll definitely use the pros and cons approach. I am concerned about the "passing the knot" issue. Since I'll usually build rods for steelhead and salmon I'll tend to want longer rods, especially when chasing steelies. Enjoy the Fall and keep those lines tight!!

Thanks Gary. That advice seems spot on. Still would like to get with you to show you the split cane rod I picked up. Haven't started it yet. Getting into fly casting as well. Will be building my 1st fly rod soon after I address the split cane. Will most likely do graphite for my 1st fly build. Ok if we get together this week? If so, I'll call to set it up. Thanks again.

What are the advantages of snake guides versus single foot? Does anyone ever combine the two on the same rod? I've built spinning rods and am moving more toward fly fishing, and so am interested in learning more about fly rod building. Thanks

Recently acquired an older 9ft 7W split cane fly rod. Well used, not sure exactly how old it is. Casts well but needs restoration. This is my 1st fly rod. Need advice on guide selection, both size and manufacturer. Will be using it for steelhead and some brown trout. Thanks

I have an old Dunlap Lathe. I'm looking for a tailstock and live center. How can I tell if the taper is M1 or M2 ? I do not have a manual and am new to wood turning. I'm working on a birch bark grip. Also a new experience (so far so good). Thanks people.

I recently viewed a tutorial on doing a single thread trim band. It involved using a coffee stirring straw. I was planning on trying it tonight, but have lost it. I already tried a couple of searches here with no luck. Anybody out there remember it? Thanks
