During my experimentations using the spiral knot with long surf rods with shockleaders revealed early on that any guide setup that doesn't provide an almost straight [path to the choker guide(flex point) will cause problems. Using a heavier line all the way to the sinker will cut down on casting distance. A shockleader allows the use of a lighter line while protexting the general public from d

It's a fairly common thing with the jetty fishermen who use their rods to pole vault around the rocks. If you can't get a big enough single footed guide, just cut one leg off a double footed guide. I use a 'X' locking wrap which fills the tunnel and make sit more rugged. One well-known builder writes about bending one foot of a double footed guide back under. I've never tried this, but it wou

In the good/old/bad/old daze when I was less affluent, I used a flyrod without any grips whatsoever. I taped the reel directly on the blank and used homemade snake guides and a braided tapered fly line. Talk about sensitivity! You could feel a fish breathe upon it. C2

I have an old pair of pliers that I used for crimping castnet leads. It will remove cork rings in minutes. To use; just clamp it on a ring that you want to remove then twist. You can remove individual rigngs without really disturbing the others. It works for removing rings when creating a split grip from an exixting handle. After the ring is removed, judicious sanding will remove the glue. C2

I have a 9 foot 8 wt with EVA grips.that I use on the flats/surf for big redfish, trout, cobia, tarpon and whatever else comes by I also have an 8 foot 6 wt with cork that I use for delicate presentations/accuracy up in the creek and bayous. I like them both for their intended purpose. I am hard on rods when fishing in saltwater and feel that EVA can take the abuse better. Also; I can

Billy V; I did save myself with caveat 'if true',, and am really glad to hear that he's still around. Is he still doing inlay stuff? He has been one of my gurus for a long time. I don't know where I read it or even if it was the 'right' Bernie. I mentioned it for, and got the answer that I needed. Thanks. C2

Pros? Many Cons? None that I know of. The extra wraps don't add much weight. You can read up on one kind by going to the library. C2

I'm glad that you asked this question. I learned to make inlays from a tutorial by Bernie Cohen on the Mudhole site. I had to go through a lot of archives to find the URL and finally did, I plugged it in and it still works. I read somewhere that Bernie had passed away. If true; RIP BTW, you can still buy inlay strips in many colors at Mudhole. Just follow the instructions. The URL is www.

I use ordinary automotive paint with good results. I've never used Permagloss for this purpose, so can't comment. To paint a rod, you need a PVC 'T' fitting and some rubber membrane. Styetch the membrane over two ends. Pour the paint through the unused opening. Punch a minute(tiny) hole in both membranes and push the rod through then back. The membranes will accomplish the 'squeegee' action,

I'm with Spence on this one. Putting a surf rod tip on a big butt sounds like someone is 'experimenting'. Buy a blank which does the same thing. They're out there.

Good points, Emory. My rule of thumb has been a max of 5 inches from the tip except for heavy surf rods where it can be as much as 7-8 inches with no problems. I violated the 5 inch rule on a rather expensive blank one time and the rod broke at 4 inches; looking like I had deliberately measured and cut it. I went back to my 5 inch rule and have experienced no problems. However, I took in a

The Spiral Wrap was named the Roberts Wrap by Joy Dunlap who learned the wrap from Chuck Roberts of then Kansas City at a rod show. Joy makrked his rods "Roberts Wrap by Joy Dunlap.". The last that I heard from Joy, he was still wrapping rods in his garage, no longer operation the shop in Destin.. Good to hear that Chuck is still a member of the rodmaking community.

It sounds like this rod can be restored with some TLC. If it will flex without making funny(unfunny?) sounds, go for iit and let us know how it turns out. C2

You didn't say what kind of line that you were using, but braided monofilament is noisy under tension. It will play sime weird tunes.C2
