The Daiwa and Shimano Innerline rods didn't sell because of several factors: First, a little history: Lew's had innerline poles many moons ago. They included a little roll of wire to dthread the line through.the rod. First; the little coil of wire would make Houdini envious. I know that I replaced them on a regular basis. Somewhere, there is a big pile of little coils of copper wire. It wou

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the old pass the line through the guides and tighten it slightly method. Note the position of the line in relation to the guides and adjust them accordingly. Too simple? C2

I asked because I was curious. How old is that rod or do you know? During my research, I couldn't find but one factory built spiral and it was as I described in my previous post. Thanks for the info. I learn something new every day.

Is that a factory Berkeley or a factory Berkeley that someone rewrapped a la spiral? I have rewrapped a lot of factory rods spiral and they look just like 'factory'. I think that I saw a Shimano factory rod spiral wrapped some time ago. It was a true spiral with 5 guides; one at 0, the next at 45. 90.135, then 180 then the tip. Looked weird. I'll look it up.

Another consideration when selecting a blank for your mud or anchor rod: It has to be long enough that, coupled with the height of a sand spike to provide adequate height to slide the baits down the line. I use a 15 foot spinning rod for this. It , on top of a 5 foot sand spike gives adequate height. It will cast a 5 ounce sputnik sinker 80-100 yards which is sufficient for the Gulf. Your

Not to be cute, but as large as required to pass the shockleader knot. Usually no larger than a 12. On my personal rods, I use 10s, but I braid. I make mine from single footed guides and it is the same size as my running guides.. I have seen a rod with a tip top one size larger than the running guides Don't ask me why. C2

I'm not the greatest authority on guide placement but after locating the intersection point, I go with equal sized guides, but do a static displacement after that. It doesn't change the placement of the running guides that much, but makes me feel more better. On my spiral wraps, I do the same thing. From the flex point on, the guides are equal sized but not equaidistant. . Same static displa

Ralph is the man! I have followed his advice for many years and he knows of what he writes. You can buy fiberglass thread in a sewing center. I believe that it's made to sew high wear items where rot/strain would be a problem. Ralph O'Quinn also does an thing on making ferrules. I don't know where the rod broke, but in EXTREME cases, I have made a ferrule at the point of the break. There

You can definitely use a guide for a tip top. We used them in emergencies, but soon adapted them for everyday use. Just select a single foot guide of the proper size then wrap it onto the rod tip, apply your favorite guide wrap finish, and that's it.. Another way, described by Ken Preston, is to take a double footed guide anf bend one leg back under then wrap with thread. These ''faux'

Bob; Take a page from the Pharmacist at tthe friendly drug store . He/she puts them in this little tray, uses a paddle to sort as many as is desired then allows one to stick the end of the tube into a container. It works! Maybe, if talked nice enough, they'll give you one. I think that they are 'freebies' from the pill makers. C2

Any cheap 8 or 9 foot blank capable of casting about 5 oz will do for this. It can be built either spinning or conventional. After I posted, I realized that I really didn't answer your question. Sorry! My personal rod is a 9 foot spinner which is one of the few rods that I own that's not custom. It is a Pinnacle bought as a combo at my favorite tackle store. My fighting rod(s) are anot

Something definitely wrong here. Need to look at it and cast with it to determine the problem. Mine are mostly surf rods and the only complaint is caused by a shockleader knot. This is usuully solved by showing them how to tie a smaller smoother knot and the problem is solved. If he's using braid, this will cause 'wind knots' aka 'shockleader knots' but that doesn't sound like his problem

Put a layer of finish on then, using a lint free wiper(coffee filter), try to wipe it all off. You won't , but will create a very thin finish. Repeat until you get the level tha tyou want then quit putting it on.

Get a grip! Here's another to add to the misery. Make batches of different colors. Yes it can be colored. Just add color to Part B. Then slice the cylinders into rings and use to make alternating colored band grips.

Put the transition guides on and tighten the line. The line will pull the guides into the correct position. Don't get hooked into fixed transition angles. C2

Since this thread has evolved from a question on how to test cast a surf rod through advice on how to willfully destruct a surf rod to a dissertation on tape, let me join in. Frst; welcome back Ken, it's good to have you back, A little known fact is that some hjgh end rods have their guides taped on or tape is incorporated into the cosmetics. It allows some prettu inlays and contrastinfg ef

First, these rods have operational limits which , if exceeded, will cause breakage. I do use electrician's tape for all my testing and once fished a whole season with a rod with the guides taped on. Deliberately power casting or overloading(and other factors) can cause the rod to exceed it's limits and it'soff to the dealer for replacement under warranty. Before I came down here on vacat

In some of the material that Don Morton sent me over the years included some high speed photos of a rod during casting. Perhaps he will share them with you. It enlightened me big time because the photos of a badly spined rod during casting showed the tip was twisted to about 90 degrees. It would be possible for a badly splined rod and misplaced guides to literally twist a rod in two. It's often refeered to as 'pumping' where one pulls the rod to move the fish then lowers the rod while taling up slack line with the reel. in a pumping motion. You move the fish with the rod. Once you get the hang of it and get everything synchronized, you can handle large fish more easily. In fact, reeling against a fish tends to twist the line. If you use braid, you'tr asjing for trouble

If you're breaking the rod at the same point, I would also check the spine as well a guide placement. A rod flexes and twists during the cast and you may be literally twisting the rod in two. I have wrapped many surf rods and am familiar with this problem. You may also be overloading the rod. I see a bunch of blanks that are overrated. Using it with the figure written on the side of t

First; a little background. Shimano and Daiwa made their reels with a 4 degree upsweep to make the intersect point of the first or only guide for their Innerline rods. Fuji, who BTW, makes guides saw this and the fact that the Innerline rods worked more better than conventional guided rods. They went to the drawing board and developed the Lowrider system to compete with these rods. You have t

I first ran into telescopic internal guided? rods many moons ago over in Foley with the Lew Childre Bream Buster. I didn't like them then and I still don't. First, the line runs through the blank like you stated. To thread a line through the rod requires a wire, which they provide an dis promptly lost? Not a happy thing 20 miles up the creek' Secondly, every piece of crud/grass/pollution a

My first 180 degree guide is the same size that I'm going to use to the tip. I see no advantage in using different sized guides. I do as I was taught: Use the straight line method to the 180 guide which is BTW, at the flex point. I did use a rod tip, but now just run a line to the flez and use guides that the edge lines up with the string(line). I use the O'Quinn Method on my surf rods and

I've believed in them since I saw Don Morton lift an office chair with a single foot, single wrapped guide. I use them on my surf rods and don't really worry about it. JMHO.

I'm cheap(frugal?) and don't want to pay an arm and a leg for something that I'll probably break anyhow. I make surf rods and wanted something to cast tiny jigs for Pompano. It had to be able to cast tiny jigs as well have the power to drag a fish up on the beach. I was looking through a little Mom and Pop tackle store and saw a factory made crappie pole. It was just what I had in mind: 12

Some good suggestions about using glass for these 'community' rods. They are going to suffer some rough treatment(believe me!0 and glass will do the trick. Learn to replace guides and don't look too surprised when someone manages to break one. They can break an anvil with a broom straw. C2

If you hang around this fishing tackle world as long as I have, you appreciate the adage 'There ain't nothing under the sun" This is especially true in this industry. Often, people put lipstick on an old pig, name it after themselves, and publish it as 'theirs' and 'new', sometimes from ignorance, often intentional. This is especially true with writers trying to sell an article to a p
