61. Old Threads
These threads belonged to my Grandfather and date back to at least the 1960's. They have names like Gudebrod Brothers and Gude-Wind. My dad just found them in a bunch of my Grandfathers old fishing stuff. I plan to use them them to build a rod for my brother.

I've considered both Truoil and Tung Oil, both of which I've used before with good results. It's the cork in there that I'm worried about with an oil finish.

I'm just now learning to fly fish after chasing bass and crappie all my life. So what's the first thing I want to do? Build a fly rod of course. Just finished turning my first fly rod grip and the question is what type of finish to put on it. If it was just cork, I probably wouldn't use any finish, but since it is a combination of Maple, cork and birch bark I want to. The reel seat is also M

I just built the Phenix X-9 and absolutely love it. I fish mainly Cranks and have both fiberglass and composite. I highly recommend you try it out.

It's been two days since the original post. Has the finish hardened yet? If not, why not mix up another batch (I'd suggest 2-3 cc's each part). If the test batch hardens in a reasonable amount of time that eliminates the idea that the epoxy is bad and, therefore, the original mix was not done properly. If it doesn't harden, the epoxy is bad.

Sheridan,
I think I understand what you are describing, but can you post a picture? I'm not sure it is much different than the tool discussed in the original post.

Here is a spalted Tamarind and Birch Bark handle I did using the Cactus Juice resin. I stabilized the Tamarind which was pretty soft to begin with.

I've done wood stabilization. Here's what I use and it works quite well.
I'll post some pics in a while to show an example.

Mike, I'm just curious as to why you used two different sized threads on the hook keeper.

80. Re: Spiral wrap
Chris, I've been building spiral exclusively since I did it for the first time about 4 years ago. It just makes sense to me to build the spiral. I've tried different "methods" but here is what I do. I cast left handed and crank with my right. Looking butt to tip the guides spiral clockwise, in other words to the crank side as Gary mentioned above. I don't really subscribe to a par

81. Re: rod end cap
How about dipping just the cap into near boiling water. Not sure how much rubber will expand but it might be enough to get it off.

I started with a Mudhole class which gave me all the basics start to finish. After that I just built and practiced to become proficient. I'm a decent builder but still have a lot to learn. I learn a lot just from logging onto this board and others on a daily basis. Ask questions and you will get quite a lot of good advice.

Just my 2¢ worth but if you put black and silver on the bottom and Pink on top you might get the effect you're looking for. The top color tends to define the color of the wrap and the bottom gives the movement.

Thanks for the detailed explanation Charlie. I've since removed the label that I posted and have redone it. I got better results the second time but not perfect. There still is one area with some ghosting. The textured underlayment is visual and not physical. I put two coats of Prokote on it, sanded it smooth and then added a third coat. This gave a perfectly smooth surface to apply the lab

Thanks for the comments guys. There is a textured underlayment, however I put on two coats of finish then sanded it smooth and added another thin coat to get the surface very smooth. I think the thread color may have something to do with the ghosting (good way to describe it). I never considered that but it does make sense. I'll give Larry a call tomorrow.

I've never fully mastered getting good results with my Pearl labels and was glad to see Pat Barnard's article in the latest Rodmaker. I followed Pat's instructions exactly and here is the problem.
There are two coats of finish on the threads and the finish is absolutely smooth, yet I continue to get cloudy areas under the label. I used a hairdryer to gently warm the finish, used the transfe

89. Re: Thread Inlay
Try this, begin your main wrap and insert the the inlay thread six turns before you want the inlay to show. This anchors the inlay under the main wrap. Trim the inlay tag end and gently pull it under the main wrap to hide the tag under the main wrap, being careful not to pull it all the way out. Wrap the two threads together for three turns, then unwind two turns of the inlay thread which leaves

You definitely have some unique designs. Where can we see pictures of rods built with some of these components? I'd like to see the XCJS, XCKS and XCDS casting seats on a completed rod to see how the grips fit the angled rear edge.
