This is how I do it. Start with a Stanley Surform rasp to get the basic shape, follow with SiC sanding screen to take out the roughness, then sand with 150, 320, and 600 to finish. A 220 and 400 sandpaper may also be used if necessary. All this is done on the rod lathe. I have the shop vac underneath and it gets the vast majority of the cuttings and dust. These are my first attempts at Tiger Wraps. Made these rods for my favorite fishing buds. all on the same MHX blanks. The colors are different but otherwise all is the same.

I wrapped three section of Gudebrod nylon thread on my test wrap rod. The wrap on the left had two coats of Cason's Crystal Clear. The one in the middle had two coats of Flex Coat, and the one on the right had no CP. For my application the Flex worked the best.

My Grandfathers rod wrapper attached to my more modern power wrapper. Recently found in his fishing equipment. I remember him repairing rods with this when I was a wee lad. That was about 50 years ago.
